The HfP chat thread – Saturday 5th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

The Langley is busy busy this weekend!

    • TGLoyalty says:

That’s good. Last thing you want is it being open and no one there so they decide to close.

    • Si says:

Lovely weather for it at this time of year. I’m still very excited for my 2 night visit in March having had to postpone my booking twice before.

I’m hoping by that time all the pools and facilities will be open again [if not currently open – no idea?] and will hopefully be a bit more of a chilled affair.

Also the Marriot Status Match is on hold until end of this year, so with a bit of luck they will have reinstated it by then so I can really take advantage

Morning… anyone get shop small triggered on brunch or shops yet?

    • Tom says:

      Yep – 2 for me

    • Kevin C says:

We are eating shop small Happening Bagels from the Seven Sisters road. Was a big day when they got a card machine.

      • Crafty says:

I miss that shop. My wife and I still ask each other “Hottawon?” when we prepare baked goods at home.

    • mr_jetlag says:

nice ones. Neals yard cheese triggered but my English honey shop didn’t.

      • James says:

Why do we have these endless comments fretting over whether an email was triggered? We all know sometimes emails are triggered and sometimes they’re not. Not having one doesn’t mean you won’t get the credit. Save yourself a coronary (and us having the read about the contents of your inbox) and just wait and see what’s credited.

        • mr_jetlag says:

          talk about triggered…

        • mr_jetlag says:

Even though I’m buying loads of cheese and sugar sounds like you’re the one having the coronary James? It’s a chat thread, take the stick out of your backside and relax. Only three more weeks till Christmas.

    • Polly says:

Yes, several restaurant vouchers for us, emails every time, and even the shooting star hospice shop by accident. And a takeaway tonight. Didn’t realise it was part of SS. Was buying Xmas jumpers..cute ones.

Data point: Virgin refund requested 23/11 in my account today.

  • Mco says:

Another BA cancelled my First class question but with a twist.

So my outbound has been downgraded to business on the flight next day. Now my question is I actually wanted to fly the return a few days earlier but wasn’t able to get seats. With this cancellation I can now technically request those dates but will that mean I have accepted the downgrade on the outbound and unable to seek the 75% back?

    • AJA says:

Is this an Avios booking? I think you’ve got two separate things happening. The moving of the flight which is covered under Article 8 of EC261/2004 and the downgrade which is Article 10.

      Article 8
      Right to reimbursement or re-routing
      1. Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered the choice between:
      (a) – reimbursement within seven days, by the means provided for in Article 7(3), of the full cost of the ticket at the price at which it was bought, for the part or parts of the journey not made, and for the part or parts already made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose in relation to the passenger’s original travel plan, together with, when relevant,
      – a return flight to the first point of departure, at the earliest opportunity;
      (b) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at the earliest opportunity; or
      (c) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at a later date at the passenger’s convenience, subject to availability of seats.

      Article 10
      Upgrading and downgrading
      1. If an operating air carrier places a passenger in a class higher than that for which the ticket was purchased, it may not request any supplementary payment.
      2. If an operating air carrier places a passenger in a class lower than that for which the ticket was purchased, it shall within seven days, by the means provided for in Article 7(3), reimburse
      (c) 75 % of the price of the ticket for all flights not falling under (a) or (b), including flights between the European territory of the Member States and the French overseas departments.

Article 8 allows for rerouting under comparable transport conditions so you should be able to request the change of dates to the ones you want ie in First. That they are unable to provide you with seats in First means that Article 10 comes into play.

The question is would BA refund you the difference between the Avios for First and Club World within 7 days as Article 10 implies? I don’t know the answer – I assume you have to call to accept the change offered and make the change of date so YouFirst may clarify this on the call. I wouldn’t raise the subject and see what they say.

I would expect BA to fight the refund of 75% under Article 10 so you may have to pursue BA. In any event you can only claim the 75% refund after flying so I wouldn’t worry about this until then

      • Charlieface says:

You need to fly, but I don’t see anywhere that “acceptance” of a downgrade means you get nothing. In this case he can get both delay compo, if applicable (does it apply to being flown earlier rather than later??), and 75% downgrade at the same time.

  • Lady London says:

Sad…. this weekend I’m normally in Italy.

  • Lady London says:

OT If anyone likes Bond films YouTube in the US has removed the paywall for now for the first 20 of them. So pre-Daniel Craig.

US offer so you know what you have to do :-). Not sure how long free for but probably through at least Christmas.

    • Anna says:

There’s usually at least one on an ITV channel on any given weekend! We’ve worked our way through most of them over the past few months, including the Craig oeuvre, which of course I have on DVD ☺

      • AJA says:

The World is Not Enough was on ITV4 last night

      • Jerry Butler says:

I love it a James bond back to back feast! Did you invite a Geordie friend named Michael Lynn, Sonja and are you partial to extra large toblerones!

  • Jamie says:

As an update from yesterday (downgraded on J’berg from 1st to Club Avios booking)

BA confirmed only option is accept, move flights or refund but pay that 35 pound charge.

So 70 down and naffed off but there you go. I booked Virgin instead. (Knowing my luck they will go bust by then!)

    • Nick says:

You panicked and acted too soon instead of embracing patience. Travel and you get the 75% reimbursement. Insist on getting it changed before and it’s a voluntary acceptance.

      • Lady London says:

        +1

      • Jamie says:

Yeah ok well in the Grand scheme of things not a massive deal- spent more on a round of drinks so 70 quid lost to avoid club world is well worth it in my opinion

Thanks for your input though worth noting for future

    • AJA says:

I would do a chargeback for the £70 paid as I still think that the refund should have been free.
