Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 4th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi there – I have the HSBC World Elite Mastercard and wondering if anyone has managed to obtain a partial refund of the fees this year from HSBC, arguing that it is not possible to benefit from the unlimited lounge access benefit due to COVID? The £195 annual fee plus £60 for sup card holder has just bounced out of my account – and quite a fee to absorb at the moment!

    • Dan says:

I tried but failed. They simply suggest that you move to the free version.

    • Mike says:

I’m coming to the end of my 1st year of holding the card…and will have to pay for the 2nd year to get the bonus points…bummer.

My account was transferred to Virgin Money on the 30th November.
I just received the code to order the wine.

    • Wally1976 says:

Mmm thanks for the data point Mark. My wife’s transferred on 26th November but no wine voucher yet 🙁

      • Wally1976 says:

I presume it’s sent via email?

        • Wally1976 says:

Just got my wife to check her email again and it came in this afternoon yippee! Says delivery could take up to 14 days but that’s fine with me, still comforably in time for Christmas. Just need to do it for me now as well – more complicated as I’ve had a Yorkshire Bank current account in the past (for another promo) and their systems don’t like it.

Anyone flying from Doha to Malé on QR?
They have just introduced a compulsory pre-flight rapid covid test at the gate. This is part of their Maldives bubble programme for Qatar nationals, but applies to everyone on their flights. No one knows what happens if you test positive as you can’t take another flight and can’t enter Qatar.
Hopefully won’t effect many as they would already have had a PCR test within 96 hours, but concerning.
Chatter about it on tripadvisor Maldives forum for more anxiety.

    • MKB says:

I’ll be doing this in March. Hopefully issues resolved by then. But it is a concern given the reportedly high number of false positives with this type of test.

Stay in the transit hotel FOC?

Another Curve issue: Paying HMRC not working for me! I’ve read back through the recent chatter and Curve support haven’t been able to help so far!
Payments simply wont go through. Tried Paye & SA using either COT or my MBNA card, £1 or £9000. never had a problem before. Any ideas?

    • Crafty says:

      I’ve given up.

    • johnny_c-l says:

Similar transactions have been failing for me too this week.

I got a message today saying I am at my limit (despite being nowhere near) and to contact Curve customer support. I reckon there were some errors when they rolled out the new trial of new limits which is causing the issue, will see what they reply back with.

  • Travel Strong says:

This was mentioned yesterday. What is this +1% ?! I’m definitely still just on 0.5, plus a message about ‘smart rewards’ which do not seem to exist!

  • Stu says:

Just seen this on facebook for AAdvantage members. (I didn’t get an email about it):

“This holiday season, our greatest gift is you. So we’re gifting every AAdvantage® member something special. Log in and register by Dec. 16 to claim and reveal your holiday gift — it will be waiting in your wallet. https://bit.ly/37H0Sme

In my case, only got 100 miles (unsurprising as am not a regular AA flyer now) and the sweepstakes prize is for US residents only *but* as AA miles expire after inactivity, this should reset the expiry clock for me!

    • AJA says:

Stu thanks for sharing. I didn’t get an email either and I’m not on Facebook. Nice just to get a bonus whatever the number but I can’t remember my Aadvantage membership number so will do it tomorrow. As for miles expiry I thought that AA had postponed this until July 2021 bur as you say any number of miles will extend expiry for 18 months from date of receipt.

      • YL says:

I registered yesterday and also got 100 miles.I was not sure for how long AA had postponed the miles expiring. My Award wallet keeping showing my miles will expire in a few months time, so it was good to get 100 miles to have the expiring dates extended.

    • MKB says:

I’m Lifetime Gold and got two 500-mile segments and an Avis upgrade.

    • AJA says:

I just remembered to log in and register. I too got 100 miles. Better than nothing for doing very little.

  • Andrew says:

It looks like there’s a new (or, at least, I’ve not seen it) Hilton Honors redemption offer for MR points. 25% bonus on MR redemptions. The example the MR website gives is 2 MRs is 5 Honors points. Min. 200 MR points.

Whilst I wouldn’t say Honors points are always the most generous to redeem, if you can find some good deals due to the ongoing *waves hands at world* issues, then you might find this makes it worth it if you’ve MRs burning a hole in your pocket.

    • Rob says:

Covered this the other day. Ok deal but Hilton was not the most generous in the first place.

  • Jimmy says:

Anyone know the cut off date to be eligible for PB prizes? I get the next draw isn’t until January but what is the cut off date to be eligible?
