The HfP chat thread – Friday 4th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Would anyone know whether if you shop small on a supplementary card, does it count against your main card allowance as well? i.e. if I have two cards and each hs shop small, can it be used 20 times or 10 times?

  • Harrier25 says:

Apart from Revolut, which current account style accounts can you still fund using a credit card?

    • Ryan says:

If you need to ask that on a public forum… you’re not doing it right

Please look around on the internet (there are websites etc) as anyone who spills the beans on here will kill it for everyone else

      • Aston100 says:

And you will still get some (regular?) users of this site mocking the use of nicknames for some of the financial organisations. They just don’t get it.

    • The Urbanite says:

Koto was a case in point of this.

  • Mike says:

Is anyone else having problems trying to pay off their Amex online?

I’ve been trying to pay my bill for 3 days using a few different debit cards (not bendy, normal debit) and every time the transaction fails…

    • Michael C says:

Try over the phone, Mike? V easy and great service.

    • Anna says:

Try a different browser, Amex IT can be a bit temperamental sometimes. Have you checked with your bank that they haven’t got security alerts set up which would affect this?

    • Alex says:

I paid off mine today in the mobile app without any issue

    • Lev441 says:

I’ve been having lots of problems with this recently. They have said it’s an issue on my end but my multiple banks say other otherwise!

    • Jay says:

Are you using Safari as the new tracker blockers seem to cause issues with many sites that need to so hand off to the card processors. Try Firefox or switch off Tracker Profiling in Safari.

    • RussellH says:

Why mess with a debit card? I cannot remember when I last used one of my UK ones for anything except a cash withdrawal.
I find it much easier to pay by online bank transfer (all the necessary data stored by the bank) and I can set up the payment for whatever date I want as long in advance as I want.
With a debit card you have to remember to pay on the day you want the transaction to go through.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Just paid it off online and was fine. A large amount, nationwide

    • Erico1875 says:

I had this issue. Cleared browsing data.worked there after

    • Sandra says:

I normally do a bank transfer set up for the day it’s due but I tried a few weeks ago to pay by debit card early as there was only a small amount on it and whichever browser I used it didn’t work. I still ended up doing a bank transfer so that’s what I’ll stick to.

    • Nick_C says:

Been having problems paying Amex online for the last three months.

I mainly use Chrome on a PC, but for certain transactions I use MS Edge, which I have set to always clear cookies on exiting. Has helped with temperamental websites such as NS&I, Post Office, and now Amex.

At least with Amex if it fails, they haven’t taken the money. Just try again.

  • Michael C says:

    Any 788 seat experts?!
We currently have 2D/E/F for a family of three. Would you swap this for 1D/E/F or even 1F/J/K?

    • Alex says:

Personally I would pick row 3 or 6 and then F,J,K. Row 3 especially would then give you all aisle access. Row 6 is on the bulkhead so you get a bit extra room and these seats often disembark first. Also means 2 seats get aisle access. Benefit of row 2 is the slight better distance from galley noise which may or may not be an issue for you – depends if you are a light sleeper.

      • Michael C says:

Cheers Alex, will look at the suggestions!

        • BJ says:

Depends how much you value aisle access and whether you want to sit adjacent to your partner or have the kid in middle seat between you. IIRC, your kid is still young so a middle or window seat without aisle access may be more safe in that case.

          • Michael C says:

Good thinking, BJ! plan B would be to have him in the window K seat but having to climb over me!
Btw guess you’ve seen the LHR-BKK offers with Swiss? Of course, as it stands, the stopover would involve quarantine on return…

  • Simon says:

*Physical* FFP membership/loyalty cards (specifically, TAP Gold status) – does anyone know if it is still possible to get a physical card?

I can only see virtual or .pdf versions via the app/website, but I’ve read numerous times about how lounge dragons can insist on seeing a *physical* card (even if this may be contrary to Ts & Cs).

Does anyone know if it’s possible to obtain physical cards from TAP, or have tried to do so? Many thanks.

    • AJA says:

As far as I understand it the first year of Gold you only get the app based card. If you renew or retain gold then you can request one from TAP’s customer service line. But good luck with getting through.

  • Juno says:

Has anyone tested if the HSBC to Avios bonus is live this month?

  • Zark says:

My return flight from Seychelles on BA in January has been cancelled and rescheduled for 24 hours later. I will accept this change, but under EU261 am I entitled to claim for an extra night in hotel plus meals, or is this the case only if I had been informed of the change less than 14 days before the flight?

    • BS says:

Yes. Duty of care applies, so hotel and meals. You will likely have to sue BA to get them though, as the amounts involved will be higher than they are prepared to pay. No €600 compensation though.

    • Matt says:

The 14 day limit is only for flight delay/cancellation compensation. There’s no time limit for duty of care provisions, which include hotel, meals (and a telex!) but no alcohol.

BA will generally pay up for hotel rooms <£200/night without much hassle. If there's nothing available in that area for less then keep a record – a screenshot of a hotels.com search for example and they should pay up. There's no limit on reimbursement in the regulations.

    • Jonathan says:

They could pushback on your choice of hotel, there’s no obligation for them to fund an £800 Waldorf Astoria if there’s an accessible Holiday Inn at £250 but they can’t just leave you high & dry. They also have to pay for transport to new hotel.

  • Anuj says:

My comments seem to keep getting hidden. Any idea why?

    • Coucou says:

      Comrade Rhys is deleting them.

      • Rhys says:

Wasn’t me! And it’s not in our spam folder either. Could be a technical problem

        • Coucou says:

I’m joking Rhys! Maybe it was Comandante Rob.

        • TGLoyalty says:

So mine was deleted because it said a cashy back portal abbreviation.

Give they guy atleast some clue as to why they might be being moderated!

      • Alex says:

Comments are only ever removed for a valid reason, such as banned words as said above or if it’s abusive/mean and generally unnecessarily unhelpful

    • The Urbanite says:

There is a word filter – if your post contains anything in there it won’t be published.
