We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

ernie Q – pb says next results due 5 January. Do I have to leave the money in there until the 5th to be in the draw, or can I take it out on the 1st?

  • Youllnever says:

Has anyone tried/know if the supposedly online-only Selfridges amex offer triggers on in-store spend now that they’re back open?

  • The_real_a says:

Shop small is back. Check your Amex offers. Starts 5/12 to 20/12. £5 off £10 upto 10 times per card.

  • John says:

Anyone else notice a change in curve limits? 30 days is blank and 365 days is £1.4m 😳

    • BJ says:

Yes, it happened a few days ago. I think the consensus wasn’t hat it is a glitch but it still hasn’t been reversed.

      • Jonathan says:

They’ve stated on their forum that it’s not an error, they relaxed limits for Black Friday/Xmas. They’re also working on a new way to calculate & apply limits apparently (no further details provided)

  • BJ says:

Amex Donald Russell offer: anybody know if the new customer benefits from Voldeport pays if I buy one of their giftcards?

    • Crafty says:

My last Donald Russell Voldeportal declined even for a legitimate purchase (not a gift card). YMMV

    • Travel Strong says:

I never got the new customer %, tracked as existing customer rate even though i’d never used them before. I’ve put in a support request but thats gone nowhere for a couple of weeks.

      • Harpo says:

        Me too

      • Lady London says:

I have also had 2 things since September not track at all even though from merchants used previously that tracked without problem. I’ve not changed my setup or way of working at my end.

Given increasing reports of this about TaCo Bell I am wondering if they’ve nobbled tracking so you only get it if you watch carefully after purchase and complain otherwise they are just keeping the money when it comes from the merchant ?

    • BJ says:

      Thanks both, will probably reconsider.

  • Vit says:

Anyone know if Fenwick offer is cumulative? I used the offer the other day and got email triggered but, classic problem, they shipped out item separately and charged separately as well. Rookie mistake, already started using the item so cannot return.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      I think you’ll be fine.

      • Vit says:

Fingers crossed, TGL. I think what happened if you ordered multiple items from the same department (i.e. beauty products) then all items will be shipped out from the same warehouse but when you start adding items such as foods, clothes, etc. then getting a bit tricky with the dispatch. Will report back the results.

        • BJ says:

I think most offers tend to be cumulative. Even if nit, you could voice your annoyance to amex that you missed out simply due to staggered shipping.

        • TGLoyalty says:

It’s possible the online merchant code is coded as cumulative for this very reason.

ie for selfridges I know from experience it’s not cumulative Instore but it seems to be online.

  • The Original Nick says:

Bendy Q, On my Bendy card it has at the top of my account details , My Curve Card limit today, What does this mean?

  • Shelly says:

Can anyone help me with my tights after being downgraded from first to business by ba for a flight in august. They say I have to pay a cancellation fee if I don’t accept the change.

    • Shelly says:

      Rights not tights 😂

    • Jonathan says:

Hmmm. This is a slightly tricky one in that I don’t think EU261 gives you the right to cancellation with full refund although BA have traditionally offered this or a reschedule to a new date with First.

What you are entitled to (& I would say is the best option for an F to J downgrade) is a 75% refund of Avios & the fees/charges for each flight that was downgraded. You have to actually take the flight but it will make it the cheapest business class flight you’ll ever take (plus if you get creative with how you value an Avios you could actually end up flying for free).

      • Simon CH says:

What happens if they later do have a First Class cabin on te flight?
There are thousands of tickets that have been changed/cancelled from First to Business, maybe due to plane changes and maybe due to over selling?
But if you find that your flight does have a First Class when you fly, what can you do??

        • Jonathan says:

Airlines have the right to downgrade you if they wish (for whatever reason). The passenger’s only right is to be compensated 75% of the sector cost (including all airline fees but excluding genuine taxes). A lot of airlines would historically let you move the flight to a service with First but this may become trickier with BA as lots of routes are losing First.

For First to Business then the compensation massively outweighs the drop in service so I’d always be happy. Business to PE I’d be more annoyed as loss of bed for overnight is a big loss.

There is no accept or reject option, merely asking for them to accommodate reasonable requests eg. For LAS you could ask for rerouting in First via. LAX (tbh I’d take Club Suite direct on an A350 now it’s not the clapped out, non refurbed, old 747’s they used to send to Vegas).

    • MattB says:

I am in a similar position our flight from Vegas next summer has been downgraded to club. I’m happy to accept as the dates and times are most important but obviously want to maximize the potential compo. Do I just accept and put in a claim after the flight?

      • Simon CH says:

Same here, I bought multiple tickets, cash and point redemption in the sale and the Vegas flight has changed from a 777 to a A350 with no first class. But what rights do you have ? Bought and paid in full in advance with good faith, but cancelled 6 plus months in advance.
If they have a First when you do fly what can you do? If your already accepting the downgrade?

      • Lady London says:

I think for the sake of good order I would call them and state you are accepting the downgrade however on an involuntary basis and you will ve contacting them for your comoebsation for involuntary downgrade under EC261/2004 after the flight.

They may or may not note this on the PNR, I would keep a note of date and time and who you spoke to.

    • AJA says:

Is this a revenue ticket or Avios and what route? Other than flying Club and taking the downgrade compo you have the right to request rerouting on a service that has First. But that is very limited as it requires a First service to be available. You should not be paying a cancellation fee if you no longer want to travel as BA has changed the contract not you. Did you call YouFirst to discuss your options?

    • AJA says:

One more question, what exactly does your email from BA say regarding the downgrade?. If it mentions the word cancellation then your flight was cancelled you should be able to get a full refund without cancellation fee. If BA says no I think you could do a charge back. There are a few reports on FT of BA no longer allowing cancellation even though they used to offer this as a routine response. I think its to do with preserving cash in these Covid times

    • Jay says:

Oooh err!! Not familiar with business or first tights!
