Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 3rd December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/12/03/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-3rd-december/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hmmm – BA – how can you work out how many Avios you have been debited for a booking? I have made many amendments/upgrades to it through the course of this year. However I am in a BA household account (with 6 members) so don’t fancy going into each account to do a forensic search to look for each transaction (unless I have to).
Must be an easy way to do it?

The email confirmations I received after each amendment only says ‘0’ avios were debited, although I know this is not true.

I’ve finally had to cancel the booking and the agent at other end seemed to be guessing how much I’ve paid and asked me if that was correct figure – then I thought I have no idea!! So best double check!!

    • Anna says:

You’ll need to check each account, only transactions on your account will be visible on yours. I think even on email confirmations it only shows how many avios were used in total, not which accounts they came from.

      • Neil says:

        Thanks Anna.

Just had a quick look in AwardWallet and it shows simple bar graph of deductions by month by account, which has abled me to easily check what’s been paid. Phew.

Evenmore, the agent had given me the correct figure! lol

Does anyone have any experience with Swaine Adeney bags? Pullman is a very nice bag and I’m tired of the low quality of Prada & Ferragamo which is more brand than quality. I think I’m just over the mass produced Italian tat.

SAB costs a fair bit more but I’m expecting it to last a long time and gain a lot of character. Thoughts?

    Does SAB take Amex?

    • Vit says:

Not sure about Prada as my partner only own a winter coat and did not get to use it much since we moved away from London to rugged Scotland. 🙂 but her first Ferragamo tote bag that I bought her lasted ages and still take the beating. The leather handle yielded slightly after 5 years of constant use but would not snap. I own a pair of Ferragamo shoes as well but have not worn enough to make an honest comment though.

    • Lady London says:

Swaine’s quality used to vary. Not sure who they are owned by now. Launer, prob still sold by Harrods, worth a look if your taste is very classic.

I used to prefer Tanner & Kroll to Swaine’s but then they were bought by Chanel and went a bit fashion-y. Not sure if still available.

Loewe has done some lovely bags although quality has varied from superb to less. There are niche brands in Germany/Austria, Spain (really excellent leather making) and some of the lesser brands stocked by Rinascente in Milan are worth keeping an eye on.

Hello everyone planning for 2021 – when do the January sales start for flights is it the first week normally or end of the month?

Hoping for some good cash prices

    • Anna says:

I think it’s going to be all over the place next month. There might not even be any traditional January-style offers because there will still be so much uncertainty around travel.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

It’s certainly not incenceivable that if vaccine roll-out and easing travel restrictions really get going, the January “sale” could be a large price rise. OTOH if airlines timetable and plan on this and it doesn’t materialise, they could be giving flights away by April. Who the hell knows!

        • Anna says:

Indeed – the only advice I would offer anyone at the moment is only book refundable options!

    • Jonathan says:

Best prices are never in the formal sales especially if you’re flexible on dates. Setup an alert on Google flights & be ready to pounce using the 24hr cancellation windows BA & Virgin offer to check logistics & book leave etc.

  • Anna says:

My hairdresser (who can touch my hair even though we can’t go into each other’s houses or even for a coffee together) has just told me her son’s amusing travel plan. He got a COVID test privately yesterday, and now it’s come back negative he’s looking for a holiday to book leaving tomorrow! Great to have that flexibility lol.

    • Stuart says:

I rather like that idea – saves disappointment when plans and destinations have to change. I have some annual leave in January so might do that myself!

  • Ghosty says:

Apologies if already posted elsewhere, but just logged into my Virgin card account and was informed that the online facility/access will be shut down in Jan 2021 and will only be accessed via the app.

    • AndyGWP says:

      Virgin Credit Card???

hmmm, that’s not good – you can only see detailed information on spends via. the website :/

      • Callum says:

They’re creating a new app before that happens.

It will supposedly finally let you see more than one card in the app as well.

        • Brighton Belle says:

I hope they dont leave out exporting transactions as I use that every month….. it’s bad enough living with the Creation statements which seems to be created on a Sinclair ZX80

          • Lady London says:

And there was me thinking they were created on a Commodore Pet…

  • Anna says:

My Curve card expires in January and they’ve just emailed to check my delivery address for the new one, so this is clearly the current timescale if anyone else is due to get one soon. I’m fairly sure it was a genuine email as they asked me to take action only if my address has changed, which it hasn’t.

    • Jay says:

Same here on two cards that are due to expire in Jan ’21. Looks like replacement cards from expired are FOC. Seems a bit too efficient for Curve 😉

    • Dr C says:

Mine expires in 2023 and they giving me a new one too, rather annoying!

      • Jonathan says:

Often resets your spending limits so see it as a positive… (albeit a minor one if their current generosity continues).

        • Jay says:

The limits have reset but gone down. Had enhanced limits on the legacy commercial card and now being issued with a personal card with the lower £2k a day limit.

    • dave says:

mine expires this month and i got the same email today

  • Lady London says:

@Chris and @nav needing to get to Australia after BA cancelled your upcoming flights.

I have added some suggestions to yesterday’s thread where your question appeared. I think you can get this financed. For routings I would recommend you engage Trailfinders as the various ways of getting to Australia has been core part of their expertise always.

please let us know how it turns out.

  • Yuff says:

I am trying to transfer Avios from BA to Iberia
    Does anyone have any ideas
I have spoken to BA and Iberia and I still can’t do it.
It says the details don’t match when I set up a new Pin and use the temporary pin.
When I change the pin, in Iberia, it doesn’t recognise the pin

    • Lady London says:

via Avios account and pull from Iberia not push.

      • Yuff says:

I eventually got it to work on my wife’s account and booked the flights for tomorrow. Took me 3 hours 😩

    • avstar says:

had similar issue last week. eventually figured out emails on accounts need to be exactly the same for CMA facility to work hitch free
