Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 3rd December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/12/03/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-3rd-december/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Tried to withdraw some cash using Curve + Virgin yesterday. £30, was declined. Any ideas as to why? Previous times have worked for higher amounts but haven’t withdrawn cash for some time so a rule change might have passed me by. Last ATM withdrawal was at least 6 months ago.

BAEC email offers from bawineflyer / laithwaite:

Here’s exactly what you get with this deal…

    12 festive favourites just £83.88
Two FREE wine tumblers (usually £15)
    2,000 Avios
    Free delivery to your door

I guess this will stack with airtime current 20% back. Anything else I should do to maximise the return? Not a big wine drinker but could do with gifting a few to friends and colleagues.

    Cheers,
    Vit

If you have one, select the offer on your LBG account. 20% back on both my BoS and HfX brand at the moment.

Assuming it processes as Laithwaites, that means you’re paying £50.33 for the bundle.

Not bad really. BA charge £47 to buy 2000 Avios in normal times.

      • Ryan says:

Paying even less if you take into account the 2 x 20% back (AR and banks)

5k marriott bonus finally in the account for the stay three nights promo! Know a few thought it might be paid next year for accounts.

    • BuildTheWall says:

which offer was this one? is it still on?

      • TGLoyalty says:

This was the Q3 promotion. 2.5k for each paid stay and a bonus 5k if you did 3. It ended a few weeks back.

    • Sandgrounder says:

Same here! I though I was going to have to chase that. BuildtheWall it ended mid Nov I think, 2.5k per stay and a one-off 5k after 3 stays.

    New Amex offers:

    Hotel du Vin s 200 g 50 by 31/12/20
    Malmaison s 200 g 50 by 31/12/20
    Aqua Kyoto s 100 g 15 by 02/02/21
Appleyard Flowers 15% back every time by 14/03/21

    • Andrew says:

If you don’t fancy a big lunch at Mal or Vin…

10% back at Nando’s has just popped up on my Halifax account.

    • MKB says:

How do you spot which offers are new?

I waste so much time scanning the full unsaved offers lists of numerous cards. If only Amex could include an option to resequence the list by the date each offer was added to the list.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Got all that other crap but not

      Aqua Kyoto s 100 g 15 by 02/02/21

Which I might have actually been able to use. Are you London based?

  • Andrew M says:

I made a test transfer to HSBC points to Avios on the 1st of December. It hit my Executive Club account today with no bonus. It’s getting a bit tiresome waiting for a BA bonus so I’ll take the 15% Krisflyer is offering and use it for a RTW. The three year expiry is a pain but Krisflyer offers the superior Star Alliance F and J products and vastly more routing flexibility.

    • Doug M says:

So you’re annoyed the alliance with the inferior F and J products and the vastly fewer routing options won’t give you a transfer bonus?
      I feel your pain.

      • Andrew M says:

I would have preferred to transfer to Avios to avoid Krisflyer’s hard expiry and yes, I’d be OK with the Oneworld option if it came with a 35 to 50 percent transfer bonus.

My Curve app had an update today and now doesn’t work. Anyone else with the same problem?

    • Brighton Belle says:

Most things get fixed by deleting the app and reinstalling it. I must be on my 4th or 5th cycle.

      • whiskerxx says:

Tried that and instead of getting the Curve splash screen before it disappears I now just get a black screen!

  • Linda says:

    Advice please.
Just had an e mail from BA downgrading us from First to Club on our rebooked 2-4-1 voucher, which was rebooked from a cancelled flight when the Pandemic set in for next March.
We were in Club originally so upgraded when First became available, having to pay the change fee of £75 and the extra Avios.
On logging into MMB it says the flight is completely cancelled but the return 10 days later is still going.

I have my doubts with the ongoing crisis that neither will happen.

If and when ringing BA should they refund the extra Avios and the change fee, or what are my options , as we were hoping the flight was going to be cancelled anyway and rebook again for another years time for 2022. Thanks for any responses.

    • Jonathan says:

The original flight may well have been cancelled but they have rebooked you on a different flight same day, or the time may have changed along with the plane. If the flight number has changed it’s a cancellation officially which gives you full EU 261 rights.

You’re entitled to a full refund of Avios & Taxes, Fees, Charges. BA will refuse to refund the change fee you paid when upgrading, I’m minded to agree this is reasonable as it’s paying for the admin of changing booking but others here disagree. Either way, you’ll have to fight for it.

Alternative is to take a rebooking within a year of original ticketing date. Whether this is a better deal depends on route & ease of obtaining Avios seats normally. It sounds like your preferred dates are beyond this period, indeed tickets won’t be available to buy for 2022 yet so you’d have to suspend the booking & have the battle at a later date when they go on sale.

      • Linda says:

Thanks Jonathan for the reply, on the e-mail it says the original flight is going just been put in club.

On MMB it says flight is cancelled. On doing a dummy booking original flight is still going, it may be a change of aircraft?

As originally it was a 747 and now a 777-er.

  • Mco says:

Anyone have Lapland booked for Christmas and waiting to see if Finland open up on the 13th?

    • Michael C says:

I have Avios flights to Rovaniemi for Dec. 14, but rather hoping they’re cancelled for me!
