Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 2nd December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/12/02/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-2nd-december/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Any good advent calendar competitions this year? Business Traveller seems to have one but I haven’t found much else yet.

    • Alex J says:

Norwegian have one if you’re happy running a few things through Google Translate every day: https://julekalender.norwegianreward.com

Sure, they’re looking pretty precarious at the minute, but it’s only a minute of your day, so seems worth doing just in case they miraculously get back on their feet.

  • LST says:

    Hi,
I get most of my avios through the BA Portal, that works well for me as it’s essentially free points for stuff I would buy anyway. I know some people have issues with the points being posts but I find that everything tracks as long as I launch the portal via the Ba app on my phone.
Had a few adjustments in the last few days from purchases made in May – they are all around 20% so I am assuming that this is the portion of points earnt on VAT? Anyone else have this issue?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

VAT is reduced currently so I don’t buy that argument. I think they try and keep everything they can

      • ChrisC says:

VAT was only reduced on specific things such as hotels. There wasn’t a general reduction across the board.

  • Nigel W says:

Has anyone worked out with the Curve x Amazon offer, if just ‘topping up’ your account/gift card works?

    • BuildTheWall says:

There was no start or end date in the pop up message for the 10% offer. I’ll wait for an email from Curve (as someone mentioned) before spending.

      • C says:

I just received an email from Curve. It clearly states that multiple purchases are eligible.

      • fivebobbill says:

Pretty sure it said 14 days (?), and when I clicked the offer I was taken directly to Amazon.uk.
Anyway, have now contacted curve support to query my lack of reward…

        • TGLoyalty says:

It wont post until the 17th Dec it was in the T&C’s

          • fivebobbill says:

Ahh, thanks TG, like others have said once the offer disappeared I couldn’t get it back to check the T&C’s

      • d4ve says:

This was a reply they gave on Twitter. Also advising no restrictions and all Amazon sites:

“Hey, it’s pretty straightforward! You just need to spend at least £100 with your Curve Card on Amazon between 1st and 14th December. You can make one transaction for £100 or multiple smaller ones – it’s up to you! We’ll then deliver £10 of Curve Cash to you on December 17th 🎁”

    • Richmond_Surrey says:

I don’t have email or pop up, do you think it will still work for my account?

BTW, I logged to the app and was shocked to see that my daily limit is now £9000 and annual £1600000? Is it some system error?

  • Harry T says:

    Harrods sale is on.

    • YC says:

Any good stacking opportunities? I read the BA portal is not great for Harrods.

  • Vit says:

Sorry I know I could have tried a small amount but just in case anyone here has done it already then I would just go ahead and do with large amount.

I have a large balance to pay off from home renovation and was wonder if I can use bendy with underlying horizon to pay off beardy? free of charge and still get 0.5% c@shb<ck? I hold free blue bendy if that matters. TIA.

  • 747_Brat says:

Is the Curve Amazon offer available to the vanilla Blue cardholders? If yes, where can I register for the offer on the app please? I don’t see anything on the app.

    • Vit says:

There were some discussions on yesterday threads that there would be a pop-up banner when you logged into your app. I have seen mine (and screenshot it before it disappeared) and also received the email but a few mentioned here that they have not seen it nor email. Not sure if it is targeted or not. I am holding free blue card if that matters.

      • BuildTheWall says:

Is there a start or end date in the email? I got the pop up, but no email so far.

        • C says:

          Email says 17 December.

        • TGLoyalty says:

You wont know until its over but cant see why it wont work Curve have no idea what you bought and top up is processed in exactly the same way as a purchase

I’ve topped up as I’ll use it as some point anyway.

        • Vit says:

Thanks TGL. Agreed and will do the same. Ordered some of my DIY stuffs through amazon as they are actually cheaper than local B&Q / Screwfix and got good stocks as well.

  • Rob says:

No-one has ever said that it was NOT processing as the hotel, except for the weird people who were planting fake comments on the site. As its been shut for the last 30 days I’m not entirely sure what insight you were expecting though 🙂

  • Ian says:

    Thanks everyone.

No, there isn’t a ticket number that I can find anywhere on the Manage My Booking section.

    The flight isn’t until May 7th (LHR-LAX).

I’ll give it another week or so and then call them.

    Thanks.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I wouldn’t worry unless the flight is in a few weeks or you want to cancel your BA card.

They’ll ticket it closer to the time

    • Harry T says:

Worry about it in about six months!

    • ChrisC says:

If it needs reticketing then it joins a queue and BA deal with those in date of flight order not when you joined the queue so it gets continually shunted around.

If someone’s flight gets cancelled and need reticketing and they are schedule to depart before yours then yours will get pushed back until they can start on the queue again. Your reticketing could have just as easily pushed someone else down the queue.

Phoning now won’t help because the phone agents can’t bump you up the queue unless you are flying in the next couple of days – and even then they have to contact the reticketing department.

      Patience is a virtue.

      • Ian says:

        Cheers. 👍

        • MadeUpName says:

I’m in the same situation Ian. I changed a flight about 2 months ago, still not ticketed and no charge for additional fees yet. Also flying early May. Will wait until closer to the flight to contact them – we’re BA bronze, so want it sorted 7 days before departure so we can book seats.

      • James says:

        Related to this….
I booked a 50% Avios ticket in the last Avios sale, paid partially by voucher. This shows fine in MMB but has not been ticketed yet.
BUT, the flight I booked has now been cancelled! Will I still get the same option with an invol cancel to redate to a new flight later in the year? I was hoping so, as its HND in Feb, which is not looking likely….!
