Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 30th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/30/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-30th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Steve says:

Cape Town is currently awash with affordable accommodation of all kinds, if it is open. Wouldn’t think points would be good value just now and the top hotels are not available easily on points ie. Ellerman House or The Mount Nelson.

  • Mikeact says:

Definitely the Mount Nelly, if only for the afternoon tea before the evening flight back home.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Any on done Bendy to ns today? Is it true its playing up via MCC?

  • YC says:

Rosewood 40% off (CYBER20 code). Looks genuine but never stayed in one so can’t judge what ‘normal’ prices are

  • C says:

Does anyone know if it’s possible to upgrade a WTP seat to CW where the booking starts in Paris (to LAS via LHR) and is a BA holidays booking with only a deposit paid so far. I’ve tried online and it is saying I need to call.

  • Mike says:

Are there any promos / offers for having a HSBC Premier relationship / WEMC card? Remember reading a post previously of someone getting emails from time to time on offers.

  • GS says:

Does anyone have experience of booking connecting flights on the likes of Expedia / Lastminute etc – I want to book a Virgin flight from LHR with a regional connection from BA to get there. It all prices as one ticket, but would I need to pick up luggage in LHR and re-check in? Also I presume I wouldn’t earn miles doing it this way.

    • Rhys says:

They should normally tell you if it is a “self connection” or not. You’ll earn miles but – word of warning – a lot of people had a lot of bother reclaiming refunds from third party bookings when their flights were cancelled.

      • Pete says:

After this year, I would avoid any online travel agencies like the plague (har har!).

        • ChrisC says:

Indeed. Though saying that I did have a good experience with Expedia in getting a refund for what was supposedly a non refundable hotel booking.

          VS can book BA-VS connections.

If it is all on one ticket then yes your luggage will be checked through

And yes (absent this being some sort of special fare) you’ll be able to collect avios and virgin miles on their respective flights. Once you get the booking refs you can manage each flight in the respective airlines apps

          • Lady London says:

Be very careful though. OTA’s sometimes ticket the journey that you buy in strange ways. That might mean you’ve been sold a through journey or a return journey that is actually on 2 or more tickets losing you valuable protections.

            Avoid.

      • callum says:

I got a voucher from Expedia within an hour when I cancelled a flight (by email) the day before departure. I wouldn’t personally include them in the OTA caveat – you normally here of issues from the likes of eDream etc.

        • Alan says:

I’m afraid I would. They were totally hopeless after Lufthansa cancelled a flight in March. Ignored emails, hung up on the phone. Eventually had to go through chargeback processes to get my money back from them!

  • Richard Young says:

Does anyone still have problems logging in to VA. Can log in via the app but not via the internet. We know all log in details are correct but still can’t via the internet using laptop or Ipad.

    • Grant says:

I used to have intermittent issues logging in with Chrome, but switching to another browser sorted it.
