The HfP chat thread – Monday 30th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/30/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-30th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is anyone having troubles using bendy to pay creation with underlying card as creation?
It’s worked fine for me for the past 6 months but I keep getting declined and the error in curve is I’ve hit my spending limit?

I can do little amounts now and again between £20-£100 but anything more than that seems to decline

    • SteveSlow says:

Started happening for me too, not tried smaller amounts, but my usual is declinining every time.
Might be the end of the road

  • TonyT says:

Just spoke amex platinum regarding my renewal due December. UK CS offered me 50k rewards (£220 equivalent the agent said) or a gold rewards card free for a year. I’ve gone for the gold card.

    • Rob says:

I hope you’re joking Tony, given that you could have banked the 50k, cancelled Plat and applied fresh for Gold and got it free for a year.

    • DT says:

I agree with Rob, I hope this is a joke, considering the Gold card comes free for a year as standard. 50k points is also the highest retention offer I’ve heard of so seems to be a huge shame to waste that.

    • 747_Brat says:

      Blimey! 😳
It was a no brainer to bank 50k MR points.

    • TGLoyalty says:

50k points for nothing and you turned them down ?

      • Josh says:

This feels like the Bullseye ending with Jim Bowen saying “Here’s what you could have won” …

        • Harrier25 says:

🤣Fair play to Amex having the cheek and pulling it off!

        • TGLoyalty says:

The CS will remember this one forever.

          • Lady London says:

            +1
            Wow.
I was a bit worried it might be just me that thought this when I saw this a few hours ago, but then you’ve all pitched up and said the same….

Sorry, but it’s a bit like missing a slam dunk penalty shootout…!

        • Rob says:

          A speedboat ….

    • Chris says:

How can you know you’re getting hold of UK-based CS though?

      • Harrier25 says:

Probably because they’re still celebrating the late penalty against Liverpool on Saturday!

      • Josh says:

UK based will have a British accent. The offshore ones are in Manila I think

    • BJ says:

Ignore them Tony, you’d think none of them had ever made a mistake, we all do in this game from time to time, even when we know better. The joke’s on them anyway because they have all AFAIK missed a golden goose because they cannot see past their platinum benefits despite my hinting on numerous occasions that something much better was on offer.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Since you can bank 50k then phone up the next day and cancel / downgrade or whatever else then I don’t see your point.

  • Martha says:

can you hold more than one MR earning card? I have the gold, can I get a different amex?

    • Jonathan says:

      Yes of course

Rob has an article explaining why he thinks that anyone who has a MR earning card that carries an annual fee should apply for the free MR credit card. Having a card that earns MR safe guards your points balance in the event that you need to unexpectedly cancel one of your cards that earns MR and requires an annual fee to keep the account open.

I don’t know any particular number, but in theory you could hold about 5 different Amex cards at once, without needing to close anyone of them

  • Earl says:

Which points credit card works allows curve with Ernie?
Heard Natwest Tesco and hsbc block curve
