The HfP chat thread – Friday 27th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/27/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-27th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

It’s a good day to break bad news, my inbox is rammed with Black Friday offers. But nothing from MBNA so far today.

Also checked the App inbox, and nothing there.

  • ant says:

Melia points form Amazon – if i order from Amazon Spain do you receive the voucher by email or postage? thanks

  • Rahaney says:

@Genghis – You said a couple a days ago, MCCs are being played with and mentioned a £700pw Creation rolling limit. Might have hit that today. Do you have any more details? Cheers

    • Rahaney says:

Yep, def an IHG issue. (Card checked and working fine earlier)

      • Rahaney says:

Btw do Metal users have Fronted turned on or off? Know it shouldn’t matter but curious…

      • Genghis says:

        Specifically?

It’s not a Creation “issue”, it’s just that’s how Creation have always treated those transactions.

    • mark2 says:

The limits seem to have been re-instated after a month or so.
May be because bendy cards seem to have had their limits increased enormously.

  • John says:

CURVE limit increases – not a bug – on curve website:
Working on new structure for Curve spending limits
    Removed monthly spending limits
    Limits only temporary
Limits will be assessed in coming weeks

    • JohnT says:

Yes saw that, but over a million? Really! wouldn’t want to lose my card before they reset it!

  • Kevin says:

Bought £600 JL gift card from Marrison, however just noticed that the cards have indicated as Beauty Gift card. I’m wondering can they be used to buy iPhone or others rather than beauty stuff. Tried it at Waitose but didn’t work. Just wondering anyone got similar experience

    • Jonathan says:

One time I also brought one in Tesco, had beauty written on the receipt, but it worked fine in Waitrose where I spent the balance, not in one go although it’s fairly easily done!

      • Kevin says:

Thanks Jonathan, I am suspecting the 2 cards have yet been activated. Will try the other cards at Waitrose later to validate my suspicion

    • mark2 says:

It says on the back that it can be spent at Waitrose, as dio the ‘Baby’ cards.
I have spent both at Waitrose in the last few weeks.

      • Kevin says:

I tried the other card at Waitrose but none of them is working 🙁
One silly question do I need to do anything with the card after Morrison has activated them in order to be used?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Just branding. Work as per any other JL card.

    • Alan says:

According to the JL Website these can only be used on beauty treatments but on another page it says all gift cards can be redeemed at Waitrose while JL is shut.

What happened when you tried to use them at Waitrose.

      Maybe JL

      • TGLoyalty says:

I used one in Waitrose about 2 hours ago no issue.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Are you getting it confused with a beauty experience gift card? That’s different to this from Morrison’s which is just branding I’ve just tried on website again none beauty and it’s letting me get to the step.

      • Kevin says:

Waitrose scan and can’t see any value or recognise it.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Then suspect it’s not been activated do you have the til spit? Did it say activated?

Just been and bought a couple more so I could finish my check out 4 x £150.

          • Kevin says:

The slip shows each has activated

          • TGLoyalty says:

The JL gift card website will tell you your balance and believe your transactions. Activation should be pretty much instant so something wrong if it is showing by now.

I went a bought some more around 8pm and checked out on the JL website around 9:15. Picking up my order Sunday hopefully.

  • James. says:

I have 3 of these cards and haven’t received such communication

  • James. says:

This seems to imply that its ok to spend to our heart content on Curve and not worry about old limits coming onto force:

We’re currently working on a totally new structure for Curve spending limits. As a result you’ve got a brand new set of temporary spending limits – just in time for Black Friday and that dreaded Xmas shop!

Head over to the “Card limits” section in the app and you’ll be able to see exactly what your new limits are. Spoiler alert! We’ve removed monthly spending limits.

Bear in mind these new limits are only temporary and when we reassess them in the coming weeks, we’ll be sure to update you.

For now, you can take full advantage of your current limits by shopping in-store or online to your heart’s content, safe in the knowledge that we’ve got you covered with our Curve Customer Protection

    • Jane says:

perhaps if you spend and go over your old limits it’ll make them more likely to give you higher ones – I might just test that one.

      • James. says:

I was £3k away from my annual limit on my Blue card so I also will be testing this out.

      • martyn ford says:

Or, perhaps, they might penalise those who make excessive use of this opportunity? It`s a punt……

        • BP says:

I think Curve make money off excessive spending. As long as it’s not illegal I dont think they care.

  • Dan says:

A question for those Bendy experts out there: the free £200 ATM withdrawal limit per 30 day period/month. Is this per underlying card, or just one card? I.e. is the max fee-free withdrawal possibility £2400 a year?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I believe it is technically per underlying card but I may be wrong.

      • Dan says:

        Ah – I think I I found the answer…cumulative and not per underlying card…

ATM credit card withdrawal fair use
Curve strongly discourages using an underlying credit card in order to withdraw cash. Please note that your underlying credit card issuer may charge you fees for making such transactions with your Curve card.

In addition to the above fees, Curve may charge you an additional 2% for withdrawals above £200 (or currency equivalent) per calendar month, when using a credit card as the underlying card. Please note that this is not a limit per credit card, but a cumulative for all credit card withdrawals using your Curve card in a calendar month. This charge does not apply to ATM debit card withdrawals.

        • Genghis says:

The only de facto limit is “don’t take the mick” and there are no de facto charges.
