Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 26th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/26/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-26th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

if anyone interested, TAP is giving Gold status to anyone who purchases Club Tap Platinum! 132k miles+ Gold status for €718 is not a bad deal?! deadline is the end of the month!

    • Steven says:

I see you can gift gold as well to someone else so might be a good opportunity to split the costs. I’ve never flown with TAP and just wondering whether it would be worthwhile for the benefit of Star Alliance Gold. It looks like Star Alliance Gold provides benefits at the airport rather than benefits in the air when travelling with a different Star Alliance Member – is that correct?

      • Steven says:

Just been looking through the T&Cs and looks like you are only getting Gold for 6 months. Seems like Silver is the standard benefit for Club Tap Platinum.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

      Interesting.

Rob are you going to do an article on this?

      • Rob says:

I’ve just added in a paragraph to our Black Friday article for tomorrow. Can’t do much more because I don’t know much about their award chart, taxes or ease of award booking. Status is only for 6 months.

  • Rahaney says:

Curve Metal offering users to change their 1% back from retailers in preparation for tomorrow.

Struggling to find any places that don’t accept Amex lol! Anyone have a good list?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Rather than choose based upon if they take Amex decide on if its somewhere you could double dip with airtime or another cash / miles scheme that doesn’t allow you to register AMEX.

  • TGLoyalty says:

You no longer need to out yourself as a Daily Mail reader

Enjoy 20% off worldwide flights with the code BFOffer when you book by 28 November. Tempting holiday offers are also up for grabs, so now’s the time to think of exciting trips ahead.

  • Oli says:

Marriott 40% off flash sale – received the email today. Has anyone been able to successfully load a set of dates that works under this offer? Im looking at Dubai and get ‘rate not available’

  • Simon says:

TAP Gold status • has anyone successfully status-matched this to any other airline?

    • Liam says:

I successfully matched my AA Platinum (OW Sapphire) status to TAP Gold a couple of weeks ago. I got an email confirming things last week, although there there is nothing in the app, including the “digital card” (which isn’t compatible with Apple Wallet, annoyingly), to suggest that I have gold status. When I want/need to use it I will investigate more.

      • Liam says:

Sorry, mis-read your question and this wasn’t what you asked. Ignore me. (I would actually be interested in the answer, too.)

  • KBuffett says:

Does anyone know if British Gas take AmEx?

    • Genghis says:

I remember when we were with BG they provided a paypoint card so I was able to top up my account and keep the DD (a requisite for the cheaper tariff) balance minimal.

  • Matthew says:

Is anyone still planning on those 15 nights for Hilton Diamond status in December? Running out of time now… I’ve got 9 left to do. Been struggling to get the day use bookings to post both points and elite nights.

    • The real John says:

9 left = 18 in 2021 or maybe 9 if they extend the offer, not exactly difficult as long as there are no more “lockdowns”

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

No more lockdownd after spring, not no more lockdowns at all. We could spend January or February in a fake lockdown…

    • DT says:

I’ve luckily convinced work to move my usual work trips from whatever is cheapest in the area to Hilton for the rest of the year. Currently in the Hilton in Reading for 6 nights, absolutely brilliant for how easy status is to obtain for next year

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Also a solid Hilton, wish they were all like Reading

        • DT says:

Yeah it is a very solid one, it’s my first time staying here, got an upgrade to the Queen Junior Suite which is essentially two normal rooms with an interconnecting door but one of the rooms got turned into a living room. Not overly flash but great to have the extra space for a week long work stay.
Though the work desk is in the “bedroom” side which I feel is a bit of a shame.

Next stay is in Hilton Nottingham for 4 nights which I hope is another nice one!

          • dezbez says:

DT – assume you mean the central Nottingham one? Don’t get your hopes up too much, it’s really not that grand, I’m afraid. Great location but the hotel feels very dated and the rooms are small.

          • DT says:

Thanks for letting me know Dezbez, is the DT there a better option? Could probably get a switch over considering the rates are similar

          • dezbez says:

DT – I’ve never been to the Doubletree. It’s a bit out of town (4 or 5 miles) so location is not as good but I think it’s more modern and spacious so a nicer hotel. Hope that helps

  • Princess says:

    hi,
BA cancel my flight on the 23rd of December. They re-booked me on an earlier flight on the same day. In manage my booking the system ask me to accept the change (or ask for refund, voucher…)
How long can I wait to accept the change? Is there a risk that if I wait to long they maybe sell out all seats and move me on a different flight?
Just evaluating the opportunity to leave the door open for a money refund if I need it (in case of last minute personal changes)

    • The real John says:

You can pretty much wait until check in closes, but that is risky because you might be waiting on hold on the phone, and the staff at the airport can’t help you.

You’ll have to guess whether the flight is likely to be full. If it’s a destination with restrictions for British citizens, less likely to be full, but if it’s a UK domestic then quite likely to be full, for example.

      • Princess says:

        Thanks for your reply.
Flight is to Italy, but BA cancelled most of the flight on the day. Only 2 left, mmmhh better I accept it, I think
