Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 24th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/24/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-24th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone managed / get to use Esso £5 off £30 spend as yet? I just filled up mine at a “listed” station but paid at cashier till rather than pay at pump. Did not receive the triggered email. Just wonder if I should have paid at pump instead…

  • Andy says:

Have got flights booked with BA to Edinburgh from the 20th to the 27th December. Been booked for months. Was going to stay with my Brother which I can only do now for the 23rd to 27th. Anyone know if I’ll still be allowed to fly? Guess I can book a hotel for three nights first of all

    • Anna says:

There’s nothing in the new regulations to prevent you from travelling anywhere, unless Nicola Sturgeon extends the ban on entering Scotland and closes all the hotels in the area you’re visiting. There’s a chance your flight will be cancelled, though.

    • Andrew says:

I’ve also been reading the rules. I understand the 23rd/27th rule of 3 households.

It’s not clear what happens either side of it though. If you’re single, aren’t you forming part of a bubble with your brother’s family? In which case 20th to 27th would be fine.

      • Andy says:

I’m travelling with my partner so while we’re fine under the regs for the 23rd to the 27th it just means we’re not for the three proceeding days. Although it does seem if we’re spending 4 days together then an extra Three beforehand shouldn’t be the end of the world. I guess I’ll wait for further guidance.

        • Anna says:

There are no legal restrictions on travelling from England – the guidance is already out there. Scotland may extend or strengthen its current lockdown restrictions past December 11th but your brother will presumably have his ear to the ground on that front. Ron goes through the post Dec 2nd scenario on a separate thread today. If anything, the legislation might end up being even weaker if enough MPs rebel over it.

Willie Walsh to run IATA now.
So much for him “retiring” when he left BA.

  • Andrew says:

If anyone who wanted some BA First crockery and missed out yesterday – they have some plates and bowls in various sizes back in stock – BA obviously found a few more boxes in the warehouse they could live without in return for some much needed cash. Website currently functioning fine for orders.

  • Anuj says:

Can anyone confirm you can buy gift card using Morrisons gift cards at self checkout. I wanted to buy Amazon ones but they had barely any in stock

    • mark2 says:

yes, but you need to put one of the chocolate bars with each card to make the weight register (then put them back afterwards).

  • James says:

If I book with Kuoni, can I link my respective frequent flyer programme to the flights?

    • Anna says:

You should be able to claim avios and tier points (if it’s BA/OW) after you’ve flown via your BAEC account.

    • ChrisC says:

Depends which programme it is and also the fare bucket of the ticket.

Most programmes will credit you unless it’s some special fare only.

    • TGLoyalty says:

There are very few classes sold that don’t allow TP and Avios.

You should be able to link it via manage your booking. For OW the finnsir site can be the best to change FF details.

      • C says:

I booked an Iberia business class error fare (presumably) back in March. I’ve managed to reschedule the dates for June next year. Do you think I would get avios and tier points on this? I’m not sure what fare class it is booked under but the ticket states – INN10 which doesn’t make sense to me. Thanks

  • BuildTheWall says:

Marriott gift card sale 15% discount – will this stack with 10x points on Amex Marriott card?

    • Harry T says:

Depends if it counts as Marriott spend – don’t think it will.

      • meta says:

Only available to US and Canadian residents. You won’t be able to buy it on a UK card.

    • Track says:

It does count as Marriott / Travel spent for US issued Bonvoy cards.

Given the flash nature of 2-day sale, not possible to test with UK Amex and Bonvoy points take few days to create.. Ask again, maybe someone who bought Gift Cards with UK Amex can tell us.

Thank you for the alert — I think Rob should run a notice of this.
