The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 24th November

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/24/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-24th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Yorkshire energy running out of money. Hope people dont topup much or leave a large credit balance with them.

    • SteveD says:

Bugger. May as well turn the heating up…

    • MKB says:

I was with Tonik Energy for gas & electricity when they went bust a couple of months ago. I had a credit balance.

Ofgem stepped in, assigned responsibility to Scottish Power — which was annoying as I just moved to Tonik to get away from them! Continuity of service was assured and credit transferred to Scottish.

I believe this is normal when a power supply company goes under.

      • avstar says:

have you had your credit balance returned yet?

        • Mco says:

I had a similar situation and the new company who took over gave me a credit of what the last company owed me. The money you have in credit is secure.

  • 747_Brat says:

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with Inspire Travel Card? I am getting one from work as a reward, and I wonder whether I should choose it against the usual choices like JL, Argos, Currys etc.

    • Andrew says:

The reviews on TrustPilot are anything but inspiring.

Take one that’s sensible for you, even if it’s something dull like Tesco, and put the cash equivalent in your holiday account.

  • Rob says:

If you missed Rhys on BBC World Service radio last night or BBC Radio WM this morning talking about crockery, you can catch him on Chinese TV later or in Suddeutsche Zeitung tomorrow 🙂

  • Peter North says:

I’m contemplating doing some gratuitous Flying in December to get to gold on BA Exec. What are the current best options to get 160 tier points without the hassle of tests and quarantining etc.

    • Ben says:

From the other thread it looks like Gibraltar is the only place with no test and no quarantine. Thats all subject to change depending on what goes back onto the “Safe” list etc.

    • Blenz101 says:

Dubai could be an option. Free test on arrival and no quarantine/test requirement on return to U.K.

Weather is good and everyone is open with social distancing in place. Hotels are generally at rock bottom prices.

You should get your test within 24 hours of arrival by text into Dubai, you certainly aren’t locked in your hotel whilst waiting for the result although if you are prone to ignoring local laws and regulations perhaps consider elsewhere anyway 😉

      • Gavin says:

Problem with test on arrival, is the chance that you could have COVID without realising it and be forced to quarantine in Dubai for 2 weeks.

  • r* says:

Has there been any indication from IHG as to if theyre considering extending the free night certificates beyond the current end of year expiry?

    • Rob says:

      Not to me.

    • Anna says:

Do you mean the Creation credit card free nights? At least one of ours has been extended by 6 months, so valid till May 2022! I don’t know about the other one as we’ve used it for a booking and don’t want to risk cancelling just yet.

      • Fm says:

I assume you’re referring to the ones that have already been extended to Dec 20 – I’m sitting on two of these. Planning to book something speculatively for mid/late 2021 if no extension materialises. I’ve emailed IHG and had no response.

  • Holam says:

APLQGNJT if anyone needs one 🙂

  • DodgyDCF says:

NWM87QEG I’m £2 away from cashing out so any help would be appreciated 🙂

  • Rum says:

Any idea how to get through to curve?
Made a payment to HMRC childcare which looked like it went through OK. Underlying HSBC card charged, but HMRC later emailed to say transaction declined. No refund from Curve and it’s been over 2 weeks now.
Contacted via support site twice, but got no response. Have emailed them today and likely going to FCA.
    Any other advice?

    • Peter K says:

Write a short support message to them referencing the long one. I found that their system did not pick up long messages but it did short ones.

They responded to the short message within a few hours and resolved the long message issue (which they then saw) within a day or so.

    • David says:

I spoke to them this morning
      ‭020 3322 2585‬
Wait time was only a couple of minutes

    • Charlieface says:

Ask HSBC to do a chargeback

    • the_real_a says:

You sure the underlying charge has settled? Ive had a few times that it was authorised but not taken (pending) then it drops off automatically in 5 days.

    • Rum says:

      Thanks all.
Curve finally replied and have said HMRC have now taken the money. Need to double check it but looks like it could be ok. Famous last words so I’m going to double check with my nursery before closing the ticket.
