Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 24th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/24/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-24th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Curve :-They switched from SMS authentication to in-app authentication. I find the new process hopelessly unreliable. Clicking on screen app pop-ups that are supposed to take you to the Curve app don’t go there every time and sometimes the authentication process just fizzles out to no action. At least 3 authentications have failed today.Their authentication screen process points to the SMS Fallback process if it all goes wrong but I can’t see how to get that triggered.

Anyone got this working? I’m on a lowly iPhone X which looks a bit too slow for this process.

    • The Urbanite says:

They have made the SMS option far less prominent, but it is there.

I prefer SMS as certain apps lock as soon as you open another and it can mess up the transaction.

      • The Urbanite says:

And the SMS option does work for me, I just tap the link and the text comes. On Android though.

    • Rahaney says:

I’ve noticed that they’re putting their app first as opposed to txts. Mine have gone through today but wonder if you click on the fallback line the other options come up??

  • Anuj says:

793K7C94 I’m not sure it will let you but have a try. Thanks

    • YC says:

Thanks seems to have worked! But i think i missed the £3 bonus deal? Got plans to make a purchase later so lets see

  • Sandgrounder says:

    Mine is 84MLBMFX 😃

    • Lady London says:

@TGLoyalty I used your code but doubtful I can make it out to do a transaction before 29th which was a limit date they surprised me by giving…apologies if I dont make it.

  • jil says:

lastminute.com is running a 50% gift card promotion, you can use 1 gift card per booking and max gift card value is £50, so you are looking at £25 off, very decent for one off stay that cost slightly over £50.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

The amount of conditions they put on using it and potentially missing out on an offer elsewhere, it isn’t that good unless you have a specific use in mind. Was discussed yesterday

  • stevenhp1987 says:

Tesco Clubcard or Amex MR points to VS…

Are they instant? Never transferred points to them before.

I’m 7k points short of a redemption using a 2-4-1 (50% off second upper ticket).

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Are they already linked? If yes then I think they are both instant (or near enough instant)

    • SteveD says:

You can buy them direct from Virgin for 1p each plus £15. Might be preferable if you think you might get better value elsewhere for your Tesco/Amex points?

      • Jonathan says:

Due to their 50% extra free VP on most quantities, there’s loads of bubbles that work out bang on 1p per VP.

Only worth it of course if there’s reward seat availability, and the VP cost is cheaper than the equivalent cash price for the ticket

    • Rob says:

Amex is instant if your account is already linked. If not linked, give it an hour.

Tesco should be overnight but could be 48 hours.

      • stevenhp1987 says:

Thanks, much quicker than I was expecting!

        • Zoe says:

It could take you over 2 hours to call up and book, but worth it for the savings if you have credit card vouchers

  • Mark says:

I may have missed it, but it seems Mr and Mrs Smith Hotels are no longer bookable via IHG.

  • Zoe says:

Has anyone got through to Virgin this morning, I’m just over 2 hours and still waiting…

    • Zoe says:

Got through, Boston in Upper Class late September for 2 for 34.8k miles. Very happy, decided to go late and to avoid the Republican states who might still not have addressed Covid issues.

      • S FRED says:

        is that 34.8K miles each?

        • Zoe says:

No, used 2 vouchers and was 34.8k for 2 which seemed great! Apparently I still have one voucher on my account.

          • dezbez says:

Virgin seems to be the gift that keeps on giving these last few months. First they fattened us up with the improvements to vouchers terms as well as all the extra vouchers. And now some crazy low fares and, by the sounds of it, plenty of availability. I guess desperate times and all that, but it’s exactly the way loyalty schemes should work.

  • Michael C says:

It looks like my Dec. flight with Avios to Finland unfortunately WON’T be cancelled by Finnair (it’s the only one left on the schedule).
Has anyone had any luck cancelling over the phone and not being the charged the (in this case) 3 x GBP35?! Or easier just to suck it up and cancel online?
And I can cancel…up to 24 hours beforehand, right? Cheers!
