When can I travel?

Whenever you want, as long as reward seats are available. Bookings are available as far out as Virgin Atlantic allows booking, which is currently 20th October 2021.

Can I cancel these tickets as usual?

Yes, subject to the usual cancellation fee. You should note that if you need to change the date of your flight, it will reprice at the full Points cost and you would need to pay extra.

Can this be combined with Virgin credit card vouchers?

Yes. You can use your Virgin Atlantic Mastercard vouchers, explained in our credit card review here, to upgrade redemptions booked under this offer or as a 2-for-1, effectively netting you two tickets for 25% of the usual rate!

  • Gareth says:

I’ve been trying to see if someone has already asked in the comments so apologies it this is a duplicate Q, but can you buy a flight using miles and THEN use your CC voucher to upgrade that flight to the next cabin up? The call agent said you can’t use your voucher and use the half price redemption offer at the same time but others seemed to have had differing feedback?

    • TripRep says:

YMMV, keep going til you find a helpful CS rep, that said, queue time is forever rn

    • Carol says:

I did that successfully this morning

    • Rhys says:

Virgin PR have told us that that should work.

      • Gareth says:

Thanks all for the help, i got back through and managed to swap an existing booking of 50,000 economy miles and 2 x voucher for £946 in taxes for premium for a couple, into 50,000 miles, 2 x vouchers + £1170 in taxes for UC for 2. And now have the safety of £30 change v a cash ticket – very happy 🙂

        • Carol says:

Really pleased that you persevered and got a great result!

        • Mo says:

          Hi Gareth

Just wanted to ask do you mean you booked into economy with miles and then used 2 vouchers to upgrade both people all the way to UC or were 4 vouchers used?

          • Mco says:

That’s what I made of it too.

          • TGLoyalty says:

he’s changes his eco + 2 vouchers = PE booking to PE + 2 vouchers = UC booking.

            Eco x 2 was 50k but with 50% off PE x2 = 50k

Therefore, same miles, same vouchers £200 more for UC instead of PE.

          • Mo says:

Ah that makes sense, still a great result!

Clearly I’m getting too worked up and hoping too much haha

  • Alan says:

If this is combinable with the credit card reward upgrade voucher, this would be a total steal

I earnt the reward at the start of the month aa evidenced by a line in my flying club account- any ideas how long should it take for it to become redeemable?

    • Carol says:

That is all you get to tell you – you have to ring to redeem it but it will show on their system.

    • Rhys says:

It should be combinable according to what we’ve been told!

  • joe says:

I’m still awaiting a refund from an upper class flight that was meant to fly in September, booked in Feb of this year and cancelled by Virgin in July… pretty poor form if you ask me

    • Matt says:

I also had a virgin flight cancelled in July for which I hadn’t received a refund. I chased them via their WhatsApp service last monday and was told it would be escalated. I have now received a refund.

  • Alan says:

I am looking a booking a couple of Virgin sale flights in UC to LAX. I have never travelled in UC before and the look of the cabin is putting me off, the seat layout/design looks weird and a bit cramped.

What do others think of the UC product. £1,000 return is tempting but is it better to wait for other Business Class sales that will be on their way.

    • Rob says:

If it’s an A350 then you get the new seat which is a big improvement. The old seat is a bit coffin-ish, I admit. Why don’t you book a routing on KLM or Air France instead?

      • babyg says:

I’d take a Virgin coffin seat (which i like anyway) and virgin service vs BA club suite and their service… BA club service is terrible ATM (and likely to stay that way for as long as BA can string it out IMHO)… besides keeping Virgin afloat makes it more likely BA will up their game…

        • Lady London says:

[poor service/offering] for’as long as BA can string it out’…love it !!

      • Alan says:

        Thanks,
I have found A350 flights, they do look much better.

  • Jamie says:

Are we expecting anything of this calibre from BA for Black Friday? Any hints Rob?

    • Rob says:

Not heard anything. However they don’t like to be outplayed by Virgin so it is possible they have just binned whatever they were plannning.

  • Murray says:

Does anyone know if taxes are always higher on one way redemptions? I wanted to book upper class LHR to Boston and then return from MCO to LHR, but it seems that the taxes are more expensive unless you do a return in and out of the same airport.

Also, with virgin’s cancellation policy, if you book a return flight, is it a $50 cancellation fee per return flight or do you have to pay $50 for each leg?

    • philco says:

Surcharges ex-US are higher for VS (and BA who really sticks it us US folks on F redemptions) For ex-US two one ways work out cheaper almost always. The reverse is true for those originating outside the US where a roundtrip will almost always be cheaper. Being US based I almost never redeem VS/BA points on their metal ex-US.

    • Alan says:

You should get the reduced price on an open jaw. They need to make ex-US much more expensive and points are much much easier to earn over there!

  • paul chatwin says:

    Seriously pi**ed off.

Despite people warning me that I was mad booking with VA during Covid, the day flights were available for my dates I went ahead and booked.

Upper Class = 210,000 points plus Fees

Now, exactly 1 month later I could get the same flight for 105,000 points and fees.

I’ve written to VA asking them to do the decent thing and refund the extra 105,000 points.

I thought I was helping them by booking early.

    • Rhys says:

Isn’t that true in any sale or promotion though?

    • Johnny Tabasco says:

      Yeah good luck with that

    • Travel Strong says:

Can’t you cancel and rebook for £30? I am in the exact same situation and was considering cancelling and rebooking to get my +110k points back.

      • Brian says:

Did exactly this just now. Saved half the miles I spent for a LHR-HKG booking for a small penalty. Big success!

        • MKB says:

I did the same last night. Rebooked an existing Points booking and will cancel the original for £30 each, but will wait first to see what happens with travel restrictions and whether VS cancel the flight.

This does mean we are temporarily booked twice. Does that matter?

Decided not to go for a cash booking, even through ordinarily that would have been a no-brainer, because (a) I want to divest of VS Points, and (b) I like being able to cancel for £30 rather than holding an open ticket that has to be used by 31/12/22.

    • babyg says:

i know.. who would have thought that Virgin would of had a black friday sale… crazy of them! ring up and ask (nicely)… they are usually quite good (to people who dont sound pissed off)..

    • TGLoyalty says:

Ring and rebook for £30 a person?

It’s how it works with promotions. You secured your dates a month ago vs tge risk of there being no availability when you needed it.

Tbh if a £1k cash fare is available I’d be booking that instead.

      • paul says:

our return is sept 11th so outside their change period

they have been fantsatic and rebooked us for the lower points fare, so 105,000 coming back to me

  • Travel Strong says:

I have a redemption booked in april already.
Cancelling and rebooking at todays rate should give me +110k miles an upgrade/241 voucher back in my account. Is there any reason not to?

I don’t know why, but it feels like a trap!

If I wait on the phone, would they do it all in one transaction, or would I have to lend them £1329 for a few months for the new booking and wait on the refund for the original?

    • Travel Strong says:

Or I could rebook as cash, and get more like 300k miles back in my account in exchange for paying £650 more.

That one really must be a trap.
I don’t like the idea of losing the ability to cancel anytime for £30.

      • Doug M says:

Because you’re not comparing like with like. Price up a refundable ticket and compare that with the redemption, looks a whole lot more value doesn’t it. At this time I think the ease of cancellation has more value, but each to their own. I’m normally a strong proponent of cash fares, <£1500 to the USA, often more like £1200, and earn tier points and miles. But right now the flexibility of a redemption has disproportionate value.

        • Travel Strong says:

I agree. I have cancelled (via whatsapp) and rebooked another miles redemption online at a reduced rate. Should be nil difference in cash and a +110k miles bump up for a bit of effort and temporary loan to virgin!
Flexibility of redemption ticket is very valuable.

    • JLNF says:

I did similar – I bought the new tickets in the sale just after midnight online (thanks to Rob and the team). I called today to cancel the existing booking. The refund gets processed in the usual way… however long that takes. I also (eventually) got to use the 241 voucher as well. They did not mention the £30 fee, so who knows if they will knock that off the refund.
(So I have lent Virgin quite a bit…)

    • Travel Strong says:

I’m only now achieving 0.2p per mile vs the cash sale prices. The sensible thing to do is buy 1500 Greggs sugar strand donuts at 0.375p and cut my losses.
