When can I travel?

Whenever you want, as long as reward seats are available. Bookings are available as far out as Virgin Atlantic allows booking, which is currently 20th October 2021.

Can I cancel these tickets as usual?

Yes, subject to the usual cancellation fee. You should note that if you need to change the date of your flight, it will reprice at the full Points cost and you would need to pay extra.

Can this be combined with Virgin credit card vouchers?

Yes. You can use your Virgin Atlantic Mastercard vouchers, explained in our credit card review here, to upgrade redemptions booked under this offer or as a 2-for-1, effectively netting you two tickets for 25% of the usual rate!

Is there a specific number for Flying Club members or is it the normal number, which I think is 0344 557 5850 please?

  • Macca says:

Do we know when these sales end? I want to book flights for about 27th Oct 2021 which aren’t out yet.

(Sorry for the lazy question, I’m currently in a virtual class room supposedly concentrating on the instructor.)

    • Carol says:

It says for flights up to October 20th at the moment

    • Rhys says:

Previous iteration of the Black Friday offer was 30th November, so I imagine it is the same. The bigger issue is that the ‘travel by’ dates are 30th June 2021!

      • Carol says:

I have booked for flights October 7 and 17. It states that it is for flights up to October 20th 2021

        • Rhys says:

Ah – I wonder if the cut off is just for cash tickets then?

          • Carol says:

It could be, as the cash price was £3400 each on those dates in October.

Information about whether this can be used with the Virgin Atlantic Credit card voucher is kind of conspicuous in it’s absence. It was one of the first things mentioned in the article about BA’s redemption sale. Was it a conscious decision to exclude that very pertinent information (given your readership) from the article?

    • Rob says:

We wrote this article on Sunday and the only info we had was what the Virgin press office supplied us with.

      • JP-MCO says:

I assume you went back and asked for clarification (given that it’s such an important to your readership) so what’s the definitive answer?

        • Rhys says:

Yes but they haven’t got back to us yet which suggests they’re not quite sure either!

        • Rhys says:

Update: Upgrade vouchers definitely work with the offer, still waiting for confirmation on whether 2-4-1 will.

          • JP-MCO says:

Hi Rhys, I just saw your post re: mental health and I’d hate to think that my post in the wider sense contributed towards that. I’m sorry if it did and it was not meant in that spirit. I appreciate you reaching out to get clarity and like you I’m looking forward to things getting back to normal as vaccines roll out.

    • Andrew M says:

Even the Virgin call center agents don’t seem to know of vouchers can be used. Some people have been able to use vouchers in the sale today but they flat out refused when I booked to JNB in the sale. I’m currently trying to call them back to try again to get the voucher applied.

  • Harry T says:

Anyone booking with points on a route that costs £999 in the cash sale should indeed think carefully.

Also worth bearing in mind that VS have been poor at refunding customers when compared to BA, and BA will almost certainly do a Black Friday sale that matches or exceeds this. BA’s flash 747 sale had similar pricing a few weeks back. And with BA, you can get your money back easily and upgrade flights to First with Avios – and also turn your booking into a holiday to limit financial exposure and generate better cash flow.

    • james says:

Money back easily with BA? Really…Do you work for BA?

I feel a Tesco conversion coming up.

      • Chris says:

Compared to Virgin, BA did a great job with my refunds. Days not the 3 months Virgin took…

      • Graham says:

I’ve had 6 bookings cancelled with BA and all were refunded within days. EasyJet on the other hand…

      • Harry T says:

VS have taken months to refund people. I’ve had over ten refunds with BA and only one or two took longer than a few days.

        • Harry T says:

For example, some of our Comair flights were cancelled on Friday. Called on Saturday and the refunds hit my credit card today.

        • JLNF says:

BA have taken more than 3 months to refund me various amounts – March 2020 flights, cancelled by BA, refund received in September. Still waiting on £ from a flight cancelled by BA which I requested in early Sept.

          • Rob says:

Weird. Got one my October half term flights repaid in 48 hours and the 2nd one, which had to be done manually because we had amended the original booking, took 3 weeks.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Had my cancellation repaid within 48 hrs too

Lets not forget during March-July BA would have had a significant amount of cancelations and lots of refunds to process

          • Harry T says:

Hope you get your refunds soon, JLNF. You can fill out an online complaints form to try and expedite the process. We did that for our booking where we didn’t get the Avios back for over a month past the refund being asked for. Unsure if it’s what helped, but I got the Avios refund a few days later after I called again.

        • babyg says:

For me simple bookings with BA have been relatively quick and painless, complex bookings with BA (where its a cash booking + upgrade etc) have taken months, whilst ANY VS booking has taken months…

      • Rob says:

Got my October half term flight cancellation refunded in 48 hours. A 2nd booking which required manual processing because we had amended the original took 3 weeks.

Still waiting for a Lufty refund triggered on the same day ….

        • Harry T says:

@Rob I had to chargeback Lufthansa. Luckily I paid on Amex not MasterCard.

My longest BA refund did take a month – it seems if it has to go to the complex refunds team in the back office that you may be in trouble. I had a 241 with an amended domestic connection and an upgrade to F. The refund team accidentally gave me the 241 back before the Avios and this meant the whole refund was kiboshed and it took just over a month to get the Avios!

OTOH all my straightforward cash or Avios bookings have been refunded within 72 hours.

          • JLNF says:

I am probably unlucky – the March 2020 was a refund of the fees/taxes on an Avios redemption (not that unusual?) and the Sept one I am waiting for is one leg of a return trip (they cancelled outbound only), so requires more complex fiddling I think.

          • Rob says:

My Lufty refund is for a miles booking which was technically always refundable so they shouldn’t be sitting on the cash ….

  • Rolf says:

This offer looks very similar to the BA 50% Avios offer a couple of weeks ago. Is there a chance that BA will have a similar black friday offer?

    • ChrisW says:

It would depend on how badly they need another interest free loan.

    • Jonathan says:

Much more likely to match the cash fares & stick the knife in to Virgin that way. Harder to pinch redemption bookings from a rival as most people don’t have big balances in multiple schemes.

With the progress on vaccines & rapid testing recently BA probably feel pretty confident in their medium to long term position with enough cash to get through the winter (aided by furlough). Virgin are certainly not out the woods yet hence this fire sale (I say this as someone with 500k Virgin miles so hope they make it).

I’m certain BA will be carefully plotting how best to see off Virgin but another redemption sale won’t further that aim much.

  • Richard says:

Does anyone know where I can search for availability of Upper Class flights to Barbados next year, can’t seem to find anything ??

  • Jessiefan says:

Are any of the airlines still doing spacing within the cabin, ie middle seat empty, or is it just crammed in together as normal?

    • Rhys says:

Nope. Delta might be the only one – not sure if they’re doing that on international flights too, though.

But with vaccine rollouts projected to happen by Easter this is less of a concern!

      • Optimus Prime says:

I hope those projections do materialise. My OH is in a high-risk group, haven’t done anything but groceries shopping or gone for a walk since March… I consider myself a very introvert person and initially celebrated WFH like a b1tch, but I’m starting to be a little fed up…

  • Bryan says:

There is no way BA will do a sale where you can get all the way to Hawaii for £999.
