The HfP chat thread – Monday 23rd November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/23/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-23rd-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I know there were some questions recently about getting offers added to your Amex upon request.
My experience: no offers (at all) on a supplementary card. Contacted Amex a week ago and asked for the Morrisons and Dell offers to be added. They advised they will check internally.
They’ve now manually added the Dell offer, but not the Morrisons.
In addition there are now also a small handful of other generic offers that were already available across our other cards (LNER, MAC, B&HA Football Club, Clinique etc).

Not sure of the logic behind this, but maybe it helps someone if they really need a specific offer – try contacting Amex and ask!

    • Aston100 says:

Or if they had zero offers, as was the case with this card prior to now.

      • Will says:

Amex refused to add Clos19 offer to one of my cards. Said only possible to add offers via online accounts. Perhaps volume restricted? Perhaps Clos19 didn’t like the stacking with LVMHUK code😀

  • Optimus Prime says:

Qantas CEO has said that they will require that passengers show proof of having received a coronavirus vaccine to travel internationally with the airline.

    • Anna says:

That’s going to make it VERY difficult to travel with kids, until a time comes when you can get them vaccinated privately.

      • Blenz101 says:

I’d be amazed if private vaccine doses were not available almost simultaneously with the state roll out. Just like the current PCR testing racket.

Not sure why an individual airline CEO thinks he is well placed to talk about mandating vaccines.

Problem counties and airlines will quickly find is that “document production” in parts of Asia is big business and unless their is a global database (highly unlikely) paperwork showing proof of a vaccination is virtually worthless.

        • Brian says:

Should be quite easy to track with an app etc. There’s no reason that paper would be used.

Some countries already require proof of yellow fever vaccination so it’s nothing new really and not implausible especially for places like Australia.

    • TGLoyalty says:

What nonsense. Vaccines need to be used for those that are clinically vulnerable GLOBALLY before we start talking about forcing people to have them to travel.

      • Brian says:

Any chance of going to Australia is so far into the future it’s not even worth thinking about at the moment.

Mr and Mrs Smith are advertising a Six Senses sale (goes live on Thursday). Haven’t checked how the prices will compare to booking elsewhere but might be useful to some on here

    • Ken says:

      I’d never book with lastminute.
      Ever.

For the hotels you end up with a £50 max voucher (for £25) that will force you to pay over the odds for a room.
      You can’t combine say 4 x £50 vouchers.
Looks to me like a real shoddy trick.

    • Matty says:

I’ve got a voucher with lastminute.com. When you search for flights or hotels etc. using an aggregator such as Skyscanner, you’ll find that lastminute might return a competitive price. However, if you click through to lastminute via one of these links, you’ll find that there isn’t anywhere to add your voucher code.

In order to use the voucher you have to go via lastminute directly. Only then do you see a box for the voucher code to be entered. Unfortunately, you’ll find the price is far from competitive and isn’t close to the price shown via the aggregator. You may find your discount completely wiped out.

Shockingly managed to purchase a £250 Morrison’s gift card and £100 Amazon gift card without difficulty today. Got a neat 19% off my groceries too with Amex and NHS discount. Just a shame I haven’t been able to get the Virgin offer!

I can also confirm that buying fuel with Morrison’s gift cards is simple and presents no difficulties.

Just wanted to counter some of the bizarre fake news we have had in the comments about amazon gift cards, £100 limit on Morrison’s gift cards, and issues with purchasing fuel.

    • Aston100 says:

Harry, how many cards have you had that offer across?
I’ve only got it on 1/5 (a BAPP).

    • Crafty says:

I don’t think it’s “fake news”, Harry; rather that experiences may differ from store to store, or from cashier to cashier.

    • Doogie says:

I just got a 2nd batch of 4*£250 Morrisons ones through this evening, no problem other than a bit of hushed tones from the cashier and not announcing the total amount etc as there was someone just behind.
The other day I had the cashier ask me if I’d been asked to buy them by anyone over the phone.

Will wait a couple of weeks and swap some in for Amazon when they’ve hopefully addressed any activation issues.

      • Doogie says:

(both times were with a batch of shopping through main checkouts – “how much do you want on these?” “£250 on each thanks”)

      • Harry T says:

I bought a £100 amazon gift card from Morrison’s and it activated without problems.

  • Nick says:

Not sure if mentioned 100% on buying IHG points

  • Ryan says:

Has the Morrison’s AR offer been pulled? Not on any of our 3 accounts anymore!

  • Dan says:

With the new Amazon (2MR additional per £1 spent) – do you think this would work with account top-ups?
