Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 23rd November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/23/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-23rd-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Email just come from BA to purchase Avios with up to 50% bonus for Black Friday. My ‘secret’ Bonus was only 45% 🙁

    • Niall says:

      I got 40% ☹️

      • Ruth says:

Me and hubby both got 50% – seems a bit random.

        • Peter K says:

Seems like a bad PR choice. Tell people they could get up to 50% off, then disappoint them when they don’t which will then surely put them off buying.

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

They’re trying to be edgy and fun but as always have cocked it up. They really need a spin again button or refresh the page…

    • DT says:

Wife and I both got 45%, odd marketing strategy to tell us we didn’t get as good a deal as we could have

    • AndyS says:

50% here with no minimum spend.. Yes it does seem a bit mean to offer less to some people, but even 50% extra is not going to convince me to speculatively purchase avios…

  • mzb says:

Purchased some NS&I premium bonds last week for the first time, I see the Cash in option but the available balance to cash in seems £0 (total is well above £25 min). How long do I need to wait for me to be able to cash in?

    • Sina says:

6-8 to clear balance, and if you sell, up to 3 days to get cash in your bank account!

      • Sundar says:

If u just buy and sell, do u get any interest at all ? I thought the interest element was in the winning of the prizes…
Or is this just cash flow through our favourites 🤔

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

No interest, you need to keep it in there for a minimum of 1 month before you get entered into the next draw.

    • memesweeper says:

… you need to leave at least a few days for the system to allow it.

I’d leave a few months to avoid a source of funds/KYC check.

  • A says:

Just a point of reference for anyone; I triggered my BA 241 voucher on my BAPP on the 19th Nov and it has arrived today, it is valid until May 2023 so 2.5 year valid which i am very happy about!

  • Graeme says:

OT, can you use a Tesco gift card to buy other gift cards such as Amazon? Reason I ask is I get 4% off via work scheme for Tesco card. I don’t have the Morrisons (or any other) offer on my Amex as was rotating with my partner at the time. TIA.

  • Gary says:

Presuming hotels in London can start to serve food after 2nd Dec – has anybody any feedback on the JW Marriott in Grosvenor Square – was thinking of doing a stay before Xmas with dinner on the Marriott offer?

    • Rob says:

Wrong hotel – that’s not in the offer. You mean Grosvenor House. It has a lot of restaurants so, if open, you get more choice than the other hotels in the offer. Also has the cheapest rooms so more £ left for food. It is most famous for the steak house.

      • Gary says:

Sorry – you are correct meant the Grosvenor House, in Park Lane – yes hoping that the steakhouse would re-open from 3rd Dec to have a good meal and drinks out

        • H says:

@Gary, if you don’t actually need a hotel room, based on my personal experience, spend at the JW Steakhouse tracks as Grosvenor House and triggers the offer. YMMV

          • TGLoyalty says:

Since it’s cumulative you could even head to the edition and get two dinners for free.

  • Gary says:

It’s ages since I have used Addison Lee offer – the £10pm back is it only for the main Plat cardholder or do sup cardholders also get £10 back?

    Interesting email from Betfair re Revolut;

    <>

Will be interesting to see if Revolut use this new functionality to decline some other Debit Card transactions where the account has been topped up with a Credit Card.

  • Nick_C says:

    Interesting email from Betfair re Revolut;

“From 19/11/20, Revolut card deposits will be accepted on Betfair.

This is due to Revolut introducing a change in their app which enables them to segment funds between debit card and credit card top ups.

Funds are automatically segmented by Revolut, so if you deposit into your Betfair account it will pull funds from your debit segment. If this debit segment is empty, you will not be able to deposit, even though your Revolut account may have funds from a credit card top up.

If you attempt to deposit with a Revolut account funded by a credit card, it will be rejected.”

Will be interesting to see if Revolut use this new functionality to decline some other Debit Card transactions where the account has been topped up with a Credit Card.

    • Gormlesstraveller says:

Thanks for sharing. It’ll be interesting to see then whether Revolut sees Bendy, RSS, Treecard etc as debit cards.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You could always transfer to starting Monzo etc and use that to fund betfair etc.

      • Optimus Prime says:

Before Monzo had current accounts and it was just a prepaid card, they told me off for using it on gambling sites.
