The HfP chat thread – Monday 23rd November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/23/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-23rd-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Presuming this fake lockdown is finished soon,is transitting through Frankfurt airport possible, seen some decent prices on premium economy Manchester to Dubai and am wondering if it’s possible to transit ?

    • Anna says:

That’s going to depend on the rules in Germany, not here!

      • S says:

Having just arrived in Frankfurt this weekend, there is certainly more going on. But speaking with local friends, the current restrictions in Germany have not had the desired effect so the likelihood is that the current “soft” lockdown will be strengthened or even hardened. What individual states do is down to them, but I wouldn’t rely on anything. Aside from anything else, although you don’t have to quarantine in Germany if you’re in transit, you will still have to quarantine on your return to the UK for 2 weeks. Unless that too changes, but I’ve not heard much about that lately…

        • S says:

“Strengthened or even hardened” should be “lengthened or even strengthened”. Apologies, I need more coffee this morning.

    • meta says:

Transits are allowed even now if you are on one ticket or don’t need to leave the transit area, for example, to collect your bags.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You can transit but you’ll be subject to quarantine in the UK unless Germany is added to the corridor list.

    • Rob says:

We are doing Dubai via Zurich in 3 weeks, but we are there for 12 days so only need 1-2 days quarantine on our return (direct flight home).

  • meta says:

Transits are allowed even now if you are on one ticket or don’t need to leave the transit area, for example, to collect your bags.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Transits aren’t excluded from qaurentine requirements.

If anyone gets off to walk around or anyone new gets on the plane / train etc then you must quarantine

      • meta says:

Sorry that was reply to above question on transits in Germany.

        • S says:

Yes, it was explicit when I arrived in Frankfurt that you don’t need to quarantine if you’re in transit.

However, on your return to the UK you will need to quarantine if your transit was in a “high risk” area. Germany, France, and the Netherlands are all included in that.

Mr & Mrs Smith IHG redemptions. What’s the highest number of points required that you’ve seen? 110,000 for the Selman in Marrakech is the highest I’ve noticed vs over 500 euros cash.

  • Doug M says:

    Ignore. You said once booked.

  • Ali M says:

Ok this is such a fake moan…
Love Hilton and how they were good with their cancellations during covid and they definitely have my business.
I am annoyed that can’t book something and pay with amex gold and get 50 back on 200 as all the rates that I can see are ‘pay when you stay’ and not staying this year at all.
    ugggh…
    such first world problems 😛

Oxford vaccine is 70% effective: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55040635

Although apparently, this can increase to 90% if first dose is a half dose and second full dose. Makes it seem likely that the Oxford vaccine will be used for younger people who are less at risk whilst the Pfizer/Moderna ones used for those who are.

  • mark2 says:

    Re Amex Esso offer.
Previously I used it at a local Esso/Tesco Extra combo where I bought Tesco gift cards which I then used at big Tesco to buy John Lewis cards to use at Waitrose.
Just got offer on free BA and two supps.
