The HfP chat thread – Saturday 21st November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/21/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-21st-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What dates are those for David? I m looking for July next year and nothing even close?

    • BP says:

Thanks. Got 3 weeks in Thailand booked for Mid-Feb. Fully expecting to have to cancel as the country shows little sign of reopening for mass tourism.

What are peoples experiences dealing with Amex and offer issues?

Hit the previously Selfridges offer last week, but instead, it came up on my app as the offer being ‘expired’ and I never got the email confirming I had done it

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Usually pretty good. Although sometimes they stick to the T and Cs and say up to x many days after the offer has ended

    • BS says:

      Same. Got the £30 yesterday.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Last day of spend get 2 additional points per pound at Essex, Aldi and Superdrug (all instore). Online at Currys and Deliveroo.

Can confirm currys bill very quickly and the extra points posted for me before the transaction went from pending to confirmed.

Unusually wide ranging examination of domino effects from Virgin Atlantic contraction.

Includes Manchester Pride as well as Airport, plus Swissport Ireland as well as parent.

    Worthwhile read.

    • AJA says:

Very interesting article. It’s what I feared would happen when the pandemic started. There are so many companies that are suppliers to the airlines and if no one is flying it follows that suppliers are also impacted.

    • Nick says:

Interesting to be reminded of the knock on effect. Whilst we have the suggestion of a vaccine I wonder how much worse it will get for all sectors before it gets better and by the time it does improve will it be too late for many ? I took a part time Job with ONS 12 months ago, lucky as I think had I taken others I would have been laid off or furloughed

      • Nick_C says:

Are you doing the International Passenger Surveys? I applied for that when I first retired and lived fairly near to LGW. Took six months for them to complete the recruitment process and get security clearance, by which time we had decided to move out of the area. Money wasn’t great, but the work looked interesting.

        • Nick says:

Nick C I am field research survey, so conducting interviews around pensions, spending, education, housing occupancy etc etc. The money is not great BUT, when working you get paid 45p a mile and they pay a significant sum into a pension for me. I know IPS has been non existent due to CV19/no flights, but in my area of work they will be recruiting soon as we are often given other work such as helping out DWP during furlough and taking on work around testing/swabbing.

      • BuildTheWall says:

Business will be taken up by other companies. New companies will come. It’s the period in-between that needs government help.

  • John says:

20% off BArbs’s luxury cabins on Wednesday in the Mail. Sounds way better than Monese. But as there are no Mail readers here, I’m sure the code will be no use!

Won’t be much off an O-Class though.

  • John says:

What would be the best tactic to buy Apple products right now?

WMs cards to Amex 10% plus the VS miles. I think Amazon are only a touch cheaper then Apple and there is always a student discount. JL are the same as Apple except for the warranty.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Personally, I’d go Morrisons (10% off on Amex) to get JL gift cards. See if you can get JL student discount.

Apple student discount is OK, but 10% off would probably work out better in terms of upfront cash.

I think in the many years I’ve had student discount I’ve never used JL so have no clue if they actually do any. If they do could double stack the offers

  • Holam says:

first timer… cash advance fees paying IH-Gee off using beardy? yay or nay?

  • Steve says:

Bendy limits upgrade question. I asked them for an increase and they’ve first asked me to upload a photo of my ID and a selfie so they know it’s me. Anyone else had this?
