The HfP chat thread – Saturday 21st November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/21/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-21st-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Matt says:

Has anyone used Curve to pay into Vanguard, backed by a Santander business credit card? If so, any charges or interest?
    Thanks

    • BP says:

I’ve found Vanguard don’t accept bendy with Creation. Not tried any other card.

      • Matt says:

They’ve accepted a test payment of mine from Curve without a problem. Just waiting for my next statement to see what Santander make of it, and wondering if anyone knows.

      • Lawro says:

Seems you can’t use bendy with Beardy underlying which is a pain, no problems with HSBC WE though.

  • Mick S says:

Hi, has anyone had issues points earnt on Barclaycard Hilton not transferring properly to the Hilton Honours Account? my recent Barclaycard statement had 21k earnt point but only 13k have landed onto my honours account. Don’t know where the issue lies just now.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Are you sure that’s this months and not last months as it posted later than usually around the 13-14 Nov.

Wouldn’t expect this months til Monday.

      • Mick S says:

cracking spot, it is actually the points from my October statement, albeit, they only posted yesterday. thankyou

  • TGLoyalty says:

Yes used it just before lockdown. Split £75 and £125. Are you sure both properties were on the list?

    • Will says:

Yeah, it was Courtyard Glasgow Airport and Courtyard Edinburgh West. Both on the list of particapting locations. Think I’ll need to message Amex to see what’s gone wrong.

  • M says:

Any ideas on how to use two cards for sell fridges online (presuming we use code names all the time now)?

    • BLG says:

      Try gumtree lol.

    • Reney says:

These code names are getting a bit out of hand. I am assuming you have the Selfridges offer on two Amex and want to buy one item that costs £200+ i.e can’t split purchase. I don’t think you can pay online with 2 cards. If I recall correctly Selfridges gift card brought online won’t trigger the offer, so that is not a route.

      • Reney says:

Forgot to add, the offer is online only if you can wait, worth waiting till lockdown is over and see if the offer become in store too then you could try buy a gift card in store – that used to work (but things can change). And then pay with part gift card part card. I’m sure someone will report back at some point.

      • ChrisC says:

        +1

And it adds to an air of exclusion to a lot of people who really can’t be bothered with guessing games.

Rob has made it clear he has no problems with people mentioning Curve, Rovolute, Amex, Virgin Money etc etc. And these companies know what is happening and will stop any activity they don’t like.

        • M says:

Sell fridges obviously intended to be a bit of a joke…

Thanks for the advice – am hoping it switches to in store as well from 2/12/20

          • ChrisC says:

yes of course and it’s one been in existance for decades. Does Selfridges sell fridges and so on

my comment was more in agreement with Reney and the ridiculousness of trying to use cryptic words for the likes of curve etc etc

        • TGLoyalty says:

Give it a rest. Rob said he doesn’t mind either way.

At the end of the day who cares if rob minds or not? It’s the readers that will be affected by shutting down the routes not Rob.

This one is obviously a joke but the other code names are used for a real reason.

          • Lady London says:

            +1
if anyone was wanting to exclude other readers – instead of just make the search bots for generic deal publicisers work just that bit longer and harder before they grab it and provoke a shotdown -then the codes would be hard to crack. They’re not.

          • ChrisC says:

No you give it a rest.

If you don’t think curve et al don’t read this site then you’re deluding yourself. Just like many airlines and hotel chains read flyer talk.

They know exactly how people are using their cards and will shut those routes down when they want. Trying to be cryptic won’t hide what is already known to the card companies.

          • Rob says:

Shak, Curve’s CEO, reads HFP daily. There are 91 people on the email list with an Amex email address. I could go on.

          • Lady London says:

Sorry @ChrisC but you’re at the 101 level here. 201 level is we’re perfectly aware providers read and can decode. It’s about not provoking too widea spread that they would be forced to shutdown. 301 is…. what smarter people than me work out for themselves based on methods shared with light coding and use those methods on other things. A few of which get posted and it all starts again but providers are not provoked because posters are circumspect.

          • the_real_a says:

Im pretty sure Shak is quite happy about card utilisation as he can use it to boost his companies value when the next round of funding comes up!

But as i’ve said before – HfP is so well indexed on google that searching for certain institutions brings up “loopholes” even above the official site for the financial institution.

          • TGLoyalty says:

@Rob no disrespect but it doesn’t matter how many Amex emails are subscribed to your articles there is a tiny proportion who read/comment in these chat threads.

Second I’m sure Shak doesn’t really care what the card is being used for it’s the companies at either end that will.

        • Reney says:

I didn’t mean to start an argument, all I was thinking is that if you want some help maybe don’t ask it in such a way that I have to think hard about what it is that you are asking.

    • Andrew says:

You can’t unless you buy 2 random £100 items, wait until the stores reopen, return the items for a gift card instead of a refund and then buy said £200 item.

      • Reney says:

Andrew do they let you refund with gift card instead of directly back to Amex?

        • Andrew says:

They do – the returns policy on the website says you can have a gift card or you can “exchange” for something else. I would say particularly this time of year if you return after Christmas you say you were given it as a gift, the benefactor has given you the receipt from the online order but they don’t want a refund they want you to have a gift card.

    • Nick_C says:

The only code words you ever needed at Selfridges were “French Fillet” in the Food Hall. A code that no longer works. But you can probably still get it in Borough Market.

      • Alan says:

I had to google it to get the reference, but wow, that was an entertaining read

  • Alan says:

Still no Morrisons here, seems to be very limited targeting.

  • Nadeshka says:

Someone yesterday asked about BA processing refunds from the sale period – a data point from me:

    – Booked tickets on the last day of the BA sale by converting a long haul flight to voucher and then booking a domestic for mid Feb 2021
    – Excess avios refunded same day
    – Email on Thursday saying new flight it had been ticketed
    – Refund ~£1000 hit amex yesterday

So FTV method saved £70 in fees nicely!

    • Nadeshka says:

I should add this method was suggested to me by the CS rep when I actually called up to cancel the long haul flights and they assured me the excess cash would be refunded not issued as another FTV.

  • Navara says:

Not on mine but here’s a code 4JD3E6FH

  • Travel Strong says:

I tried to visit the Son of Morris but he was too popular – queues off around the car park! Haven’t seen that since April anywhere else around here. Maybe everyone else was there for gift cards too!
