The HfP chat thread – Friday 20th November

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/20/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-20th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Signed up and see Morrisons offer….

  • cinereus says:

Does anyone have a recommended PCR test provider for the Canaries? Many either don’t fulfil the requirement of printing your passport number or being guaranteed to be fast enough for the 72h requirement.

    • Amber Lynn says:

Don’t bother travelling until the vaccine is rolled out, and save yourself the aggravation.

    • Choons says:

I too would be interested in knowing this as I’m planning to head out there come mid-December. Didn’t even know about the passport number thingy too.

    • Tracey says:

It would be helpful to know where you are based.
Taking a wild guess, If you are anywhere near London, north London clinic in Southgate were helpful when I was looking and quoted about 36 hours turnaround. I should add that the lockdown 2 ban on holidays meant I cancelled, so no personal experience. If you want to throw £495 at it, Fleet Street clinic advertise same day testing.

  • BS says:

An interesting double stack with the sunglasseshut £20 off £80 offer is code ‘Welcome30’ which gives another £30 off. Combining with the current 50% sale, and you can really bag a bargain. Voldemort-site might also be giving a possible 10% in avios as well.

    • Aston100 says:

I’ve got several disputes open with Voldemort.
Their latest policy seems to be that if you keep bothering them enough, they will eventually offer you 25% of the money you were meant to have received, as a goodwill gesture because apparently the fault is always with the end merchants (despite evidence of receipts / statements / purchase tracking on the Voldemort site etc).

      I find this ridiculous.
Is there a similar site that is actually reliable? (squid co and BA store apparently just as prone to denying and/or clawing back).

      • Aston100 says:

Yeah, I’m sure you know who I meant by squid co.
Filters on this site are pretty tough.

    • Anna says:

Alas, when we will need sunglasses again?!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

If only Sunglasses hut did prescription glasses!

      • Lady London says:

Glasses Direct does. M S E has the £14 for 2 spectacles offer back this week, making 1 of them sunglasses would cost you an extra £10 IIRC. Mostly very decent quality.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

@LL, I am nearly blind so have a complex prescription including bifocals, so sadly have to get them face to face.

      • BJ says:

See also my reply to Rhys below.

    • Rhys says:

What is the sunglasseshut £20 off £80 offer ?

    • Graeme says:

Thanks for this! £222 armani’s for £60 with the code and basic amex.

  • Olly says:

So, I have worked out Bendy and Beardy but can anyone give me hint about Voldamort please?

  • RI says:

My amazon gift card bought from Morrison did not activate was declined but Morrison’s took the money after long chat with amazon help have to go back and activated hope they don’t refund the card and just activate it

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Oh dear whats that I hear? You reminded it to your other Amex or debit card? What a shame! Now they cant claw it back!

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Meant to say refunded, damn auto correct!

        • ri says:

will they allow me to refund to my debit card?

          • Freddy says:

Another amex if u got one would fly under the radar

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

If you get the right person they don’t give care. I remember a pub overcharged me once by quite a bit, the manager offered cash or card as a refund!

            Its all about being nice…

          • Alex D says:

If they ask to refund, just push any card in without making a fuss and often it’ll just go straight through. Most staff really aren’t bothered

          • Anna says:

@Olly, I was just thinking that but then maybe Kinkell is a place in Scotland which I should know about?!

          • Anna says:

The best shop for this is the shop that isn’t just any shop …

    • Reney says:

amazon just credited my online account with the value of the gift card after emailing photos of the receipt.

    • Olly says:

FYI …. I went to Morrisons this afternoon to buy Amazon Gift cards but was told they had sent them all back as they couldn’t activate them and caused no end of problems. I bought ££££ of their own gift cards hoping I can use them to buy Amazon ones when they sort it out.

  • Niall says:

This is a pretty newbie question… I spent £150 at Harvey Nichols and generated the £30 statement credit. Unfortunately something is broken and Harvey Nichols are making a partial refund which will bring me under the £150. I asked for a voucher / store credit but they couldn’t/wouldn’t do that.

Is the £30 offer statement credit likely to be reversed?

    • Jonathan says:

In general yes, sometimes you get away with it. Very much depends how they process the refund. Have you got the offer on another card or supplementary? If so just do a new order & return all of the original purchase

      • Niall says:

Unfortunately offer now expired. Think I have to just hope that Amex don’t claw back. Wonder if you explain to Amex it wasn’t a return but a refund, would they be sympathetic…

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

If you explain it to Amex the CSA will almost certainly claw it back because they won’t want to be fired. Brighton might be nice but I would just leave it.

          • David says:

            Centurion, they honour

          • Niall says:

I don’t mean to suggest I would explain! I mean if the credit was clawed back, I might appeal on the basis it wasn’t a return. Definitely I won’t bring it up unless the £30 credit is removed.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Potentially, sometimes they do it. But not unheard of that it doesn’t get clawed back… I wouldnt ask Amex as then they will claw it back!

    • Carol says:

I used this offer but then asked for a refund – the £30 was taken back the day after the returns were received by them

    • Carol says:

My £30 credit was reversed the day after they received my returns

  • Lady London says:

Do you have to be on O2 network though, to use Airtime Rewards?

  • Gormlesstraveller says:

Has anyone got a Casterly Rock on beta yet? Does it work creatively, perhaps to feed Ernie?
