Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 20th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/20/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-20th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    More points too?

  • FFoxSake says:

Parents have some Qantas points expiring soon (in a few weeks I think). Any easy ways to keep their points alive for a bit longer? Thanks.

    • ChrisC says:

How many points are involved? What options are there on the QF website?

Sometimes small amounts are just not worth bothering with.

    • AJA says:

I don’t know whether it still works but you used to be able to get 5 points by signing up for the Qantas Wellbeing App and entering your height and weight.

Alternatively try buying one song from Apple iTunes via the Qantas online mall (only works online on desktop, don’t use iPad or iPhone).

Or transfer hotel points to Qantas – 10,000 Hilton points = 1,500 Qantas points

      • guesswho2000 says:

Indeed, Wellbeing is probably the easiest free way to do it https://go.qantaswellbeing.com/kn8PY7Vlzbb (hope this is OK, it’s my link and we’d both get 150 QF points from anyone who uses it).

QF points are 18 month rolling expiry, you can also purchase some but it’s not cheap.

Fwiw I bought 4x £100 Amazon gift cards at my local Morrisons, with some other shopping, went through a human till…..cards activated ok but pending Amex transaction showed ‘Morrisons Cafe’ and I didn’t get 10% credit.

    • ken says:

when did you buy them ?

My credit turned up today (purchased cards last saturday)

      • Reney says:

Same here, and I never got the “you redeemed your offer email”.

Update: on the amazon gift card that did not activate it. Amazon fixed the problem for me, it took 6 days.

      • Metty says:

You’re right, credit yesterday for a purchase 7 days ago! Happy days.

    • Kai says:

Merchant name in pending transactions are often different and the credit isn’t gonna apply until a few days after the settlement.

    • The real John says:

No email, got credit in 5 days.

  • JL says:

Has anyone tried paying Intercont using the JL card rather than beardy? Is there any cash advance fees or interest?

  • BS says:

    Hi Rob,

I know you’ve done an article on what to do with a small amount of orphan miles. Do you think you could do an article on how to stop miles from different programmes expiring?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

For the hotel schemes, we have done – go to our hotel promos page, scroll down and there is a link under the blurb for each programme.

We tend not to bother with the airline schemes because most people do tend to trigger some activity more easily, such as using shopping portals. American is a trickier one but the easy option there is post on the AwardWallet blog which earns you 5 AA miles.

      • BS says:

Thanks. Info like that AA info is incredibly useful – I’m sure would make a great article! I’ve lost a few thousand through not knowing it…

  • Rob says:

IMPORTANT: More testing! As of 11.15am we have just added a re-written version of the code which softens the ‘Reply’ button sensitivity.

If you see weird comment scrolling returning post 11.15 then please let us know, especially if you didn’t see it yesterday or first thing today. Thanks.

Question on Selfridges. They currently have a 20% Christmas Came Early (CCE) offer online. There is a couple of items I want which I can stack with the spend £100 get back £30 offer that turned up on my Amex this morning. The CCE offer doesn’t have an end date, are there any regular shopper who can tell me if there will be better offers next week with Black Friday or should I go ahead and purchase now? Thx

    • TGLoyalty says:

CCE is usually the Black Friday offer they have for a weekend only

I suspect they are running it longer as all stores are closed and they need to shift stock.

      • Andrew says:

Agree, it’s an annual thing over BF weekend, this year they have started a few weeks early, but I wouldn’t expect deeper discounts until the actual sale start.

        • Reney says:

Sorry, Andrew is your comment meant to disagree with TGLoyalty? Your comment seems to suggest deeper discount to come, whereas TGLoyalty seems to suggest this is it?

          • TGLoyalty says:

Deeper discounts would be the usual end of season sales. CCE is applicable to some none seasonal lines too

Tbh the best sales are usually private ones where you need to be in contact with someone at the concession to hear about it.

  • Sean says:

    Data point re Plat referrals.

Referred my Wife last night for BA card – referral bonus of 18k points in my account this morning.
