Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 20th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/20/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-20th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Alan says:

I am off to Morrisons later to use the 10% offer.

Plan is to buy around £2,500 of John Lewis gift vouchers.

Is this possible or would I be better off getting Morrisons vouchers and trading them for JL vouchers as required.

    • Doug M says:

If you want the JLP ones immediately you need to get them I guess. If not and it’s more speculative over coming months I’d buy half and half with Morrison’s own so you can change mind later if you wish, and the purchasing is a bit easier based on values I’ve seen. The highest value JLP ones I’ve seen are £100, so that’s 25 cards, which you may not find in a single store, others may have seen higher value ones. Morrison’s own can be up to £250 based on my experience.
When you pick the cards up you need to check each one, I found frequently cards behind do not match one in front.

      • TGLoyalty says:

25 cards vs self checkout might be a stretch!

£250 morrisons cuts that down to 10, as this is a one shot only deal its more important it goes smoothly!

    • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

wow, good luck getting that much in one go!

    • Olly says:

Looking at the T&Cs it states “only one credit per UK card”, so does that mean if I buy some Amazon vouchers and then do a shop that it is possible that the 10% might be for the lower shop amount rather than the ££££ of vouchers?

    • SL says:

It looks like buying Morrisons own gift cards are better than going for others in terms of potential issues. Is it better to do this at self checkout rather than at a manned till?

And aside from being able to use at JL and Waitrose are there any other material benefits going for JL GCs than say someone like Amazon? Or is it just personal preferences?

      Thanks

      • ken says:

No problems going to a manned till.

You will get a lot of activation receipts alongside main receipt.

        • Raz says:

Just been got one 250 amazon voucher and two 250 Morrison vouchers

Annoyingly amazon voucher not working when trying to top speaking to amazon chat trying to resolve

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Personal preference

    • Rahaney says:

It also says any abuse of this offer “as determined by us” will cause the offer to be rescinded & credit removed. I think 2.5k at a Grocers is asking for it?

Also isn’t it only for the first 25k to save? We must be near that already?

  • Anna says:

Can I pick Scots readers brains? I’m assuming it’s illegal from today to enter the restricted areas of Scotland from England as well as from other areas of Scotland? I have train tickets to Edinburgh for December 4th and am wondering if I can get Avanti West Coast to refund or exchange without hitting me with their “admin” fee.

    • Graeme says:

Edinburgh is in Tier 3, so not ‘locking down’ like much of the west of Scotland. However, I believe all cross border travel is being discouraged.

      • Anna says:

Ah right, I thought Tier 3 was one of those where you can’t go in and out. I think it’s likely that The George won’t reopen unless it has a huge number of guaranteed bookings, but I’m waiting for the hotel to cancel so I might be in a better position to complain to IHG that I can’t now rebook as they have pulled all award availability. (They have tried saying that they are still offering points nights on certain dates, but don’t seem to be able to confirm when these dates are!).

        • Dave says:

Non essential travel is also banned in level 3 areas. As of today it will be against the law to travel into/ out of any authority area in level 3 or level 4 (unless for essential purposes).

          • Anna says:

That’s not what Graeme is saying (above). Does this apply to people coming from England or not? I can’t find much clarity on this, the best I can find is that residents of the higher tiers can’t move in and out, there’s nothing about non-residents. If we are banned from entering legally I might have a bit more leverage to get our stay moved rather than cancelled.

        • Peggerz says:

          Hi @Anna.
FYI I passed The George IC yesterday. It is still closed, though some staff within. The attached Burr &Co coffee shop also closed, whilst most other coffee shops/restaurants remain open in Edinburgh. So, not looking good for your trip.
Also noted that the Kimpton Charlotte has now closed, it having been open for a few months recently. At a guess I’d say this is because of England’s lockdown stopping visitors from down South and the restrictions – now set in Scots Law – about movements in level 3 & 4 areas of Scotland. Edinburgh is level 3 at present and has a falling Covid prevalence. Here’s hoping we drop to Level 2 soon.

          • Anna says:

Let’s hope we all do! Yes it’s very interesting Peggerz, The George are telling IHG they are re-opening on the 3rd so my stay can go ahead or I can re-book on points for a future date, yet when you speak to them directly they don'[t know when they’re opening and on the IHG website there are no nights available for points for the next 12 months! Sounds as though they don’t want IHG to know what they’re up to …

      • Jill (Kinkell) says:

It becomes Law at 6 pm to not travel across borders unless for certain reasons …check out Gov. site.

    • Chris Heyes says:

Anna, I’ve found if you are reg with Avanti (ie. you sign in to buy tickets) they are very reasonable I’ve changed/canceled tickets during Covid without “admin” fee. even when train has been still running
Different story for niece & daughter though (not reg with them bought through trainline)

      • Anna says:

Thanks Chris, how did you contact them?

        • Chris Heyes says:

Anna call centre 0345 528 0253 just explain and ask if they will cancel/rebook without Admin fee (just tell them your a regular customer they wont check)

          • Anna says:

            Thanks!

          • Anna says:

This is from the Transport Scotland website:

“If you live in a Level 0, 1, or 2 area in Scotland, or are considering travel to Scotland from anywhere else, you should:

minimise unnecessary journeys between areas in different levels
and avoid any unnecessary travel to places in Level 3 or Level 4 areas
if you have to travel for essential purposes, follow the guidance on travelling safely below”

So it looks as though our journey to Edinburgh from England wouldn’t actually be breaking the law, as long as we didn’t leave Edinburgh during our visit. (Unless new English laws banning travel from where we live are brought in between December 2nd and 6th!)

    • Mike says:

It’s like Communism up in Scotland. What’s next, an internal passport?

  • TGLoyalty says:

Wouldn’t count you tracked chickens until they actually post!

  • Graham Walsh says:

Anyone have ideas on how to stop Scandic hotel points expiring? Have a few and obviously not going to the Nordics anytime soon.

    • johnny_c-l says:

If you don’t find a solution to this I seem to remember being able to donate Scandic points to charity a few years ago.

  • xcalx says:

    Can someone remind me.
Is it surname only match for Tesco CC to Avios transfers. Not done one for a few years. Cheers.

    • dezbez says:

Not sure whether that’s the case for Avios, but I have no problems transferring into Virgin air miles for various family members (same surname).

    • guesswho2000 says:

No, any CC voucher can purchase Avios for your account. Haven’t done it for a couple of years mind, but it always worked fine previously.

  • Motormike says:

Nice stuff! How long did they take to track to your account James, and was any of the spend on gift cards?

    • James. says:

Motormike, transactions tracked after about 5-6 days. And includes GC of £50.

  • Also says:

Anyone have experience of using Curve to load the Crypto[.]com Visa card from an IHG card. Do I even need to get Curve involved?

    • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

bendy doesn’t work with crypto unfortunately

      • Also says:

        Ahhh, thanks

        • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

crypto was a gold mine for me in the summer when they still gave CRO back on HMRC and ernie! Managed to get around £1k back before they ended it

          • Ashish says:

            Why didn’t share we us?

          • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

I did at the time, got removed quite quickly though. It wasn’t the easiest (involved locking up around £1500 for 6 months, to get 3% back anyway)

    • guesswho2000 says:

Don’t recommend using IHG for crypto at all, Creation prohibit it and have questioned my transactions previously warning me crypto is prohibited (my transactions weren’t crypto, but they definitely hammered the point home anyway).

      • memesweeper says:

        +1

I don’t recommend using *any* account you care about to buy crypto with. Banks are getting very nervous it seems.

    • The Urbanite says:

@Ashish this card was not one for beginners or people not keen on keeping on top of technical matters.

It involves buying cryptocurrency and holding it for 6 months. That could be hundreds or even thousands of pounds. In the last 6 months there have been countless changes to the product and you had to be careful not to get caught out or stung with fees.

Furthermore they are severely clamping down on MSers. Those who got in early did ok but they have stopped rewarding spend with virtually all MS MCCs and many more. They introduced new restrictions and retrospectively applied them, so are clawing back rewards they feel were earned through non-genuine or business spend. And if you don’t pay them back, you may be locked out of your account along with whatever is in it!

      Have to tread very carefully.

  • Colin MacKinn says:

:Alert from accountants if you will be claiming SEISS – check HMRC didn’t send you an email asking to confirm you are still trading.

If they did send you an email (1% have been sent it), you have until end of today to submit the confirmation or you will get no cash!

    http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/tax/business-tax/hmrc-to-block-seiss-grants-where-no-reply

It seems things like change in VAT status may have triggered the emails.
