The HfP chat thread – Friday 20th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/20/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-20th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Do you do the test yourself or does someone do it?

  • Zark says:

I have tried to add somebody to my house account on BA, but the email the system is supposed to send new memeber to confirm does not get sent, so new member is left pending. Reported this to BA who said it is an error caused by system picking up my email from my saved log in, so to flush, etc. This does not work as tried from a tablet which has never been used for BA. BA say they are working on it and will be in touch. Two weeks now…..
Anybody found a work around that works?

  • Fred S says:

Amex offers: Would the LHW offer stack (say with Set)?

    • TGLoyalty says:

In theory as its unlikely they use a different billing system for LHW bookings vs direct bookings

      • Rob says:

But they use the same credit card machine ….

        • TGLoyalty says:

🙂 I can’t say 100% but if I had the LHW deal I’d be trying it as I’d be 99.99% sure it would work.

  • Sam says:

Is it relatively common for online check in to be ‘unavailable for this flight’ for a BA flight?

    • Rob says:

Yes, if you need to show documentation first eg a Covid test or visa.

      • Sam says:

Can’t think what this would be, we’re flying to Barcelona tomorrow, so should avoid the need for a negative test. Would it be just the normal Covid questionnaire that Spain ask for?

        • Reeferman says:

Yes – we used it for Malaga 3 days ago. Nothing changes until next Monday.

          • Sam says:

Thanks all, a helpful reminder to get those forms done nice and early and I can relax about not being able to check in online.

        • Lady London says:

Let us know when you get safely to BCN @Sam we know you’ve been worrying

    • Rhys says:

Common atm if BA have to check you have certain covid documentation for your destination. When I went to Greece they had to check I had filled out the form and got a QR code, for example.

    • Anna says:

If you’re going to the US it can mean you’ve been selected for extra security checks. Which if for some reason you wanted to avoid, you’ve now had plenty of notice for cancelling your travel plans!

  • Lilly says:

I have some orphan Virgin miles from a sign up bonus and I went to go use them before they expire. Their redemption website pages are as rubbish as ever, with broken and circular links. Anyway it seems that I can’t get Virgin wine anymore? Is that going to be a permanent feature, do we think?

  • Michelle says:

Hi, sorry if I’ve missed this but is there any word on Amex shop small this year? Is it a ‘super Saturday’ only on 5th December? Many thanks

    • Rhys says:

      We don’t know!

      • Rob says:

A small shop owner I know says it is happening and that Amex has budgeted £18 million for it according to comms he received. Let’s see if this is correct.

    • Andrew says:

There’s of course a level of uncertainty about what, if anything will reopen by then – could be non-essential retail and restaurants, maybe not pubs though.

    • Toppcat says:

Lots of Shop Small adverts coming through LHR on Monday (and I mean lots), so I presume something will be announced once we come out of lockdown?

  • Raz says:

Probably been discussed and answered before can you use Amex 10% back At Morrison. to buy amazon voucher if so what is maximum

    • Rob says:

You can, but a lot of people have had issues with the tills activating them properly. If you do it, CHECK YOUR RECEIPT before walking away and ensure it says ‘Activated’ on it.

      • Raz says:

My wife’s Santander Debit card is showing 15% back not sure if this would work

    • Doug M says:

Been written before by many, but the safest way is to buy Morrison’s own gift cards which you can do in £250 lumps. Then use these at your leisure to buy the gift cards you really want.
There are a variety of experiences and problems with buying multiple gift cards, and many methods that work in one store don’t in another.
I bought Amazon £100 ones, John Lewis £100 ones and Morrison’s own £250 ones without problems. If self checking out use at till choc bars to fool the scales which are not sensitive enough for gift cards.

  • AviosNewbie says:

Has anyone stayed at the Pullman Maldives? Looks great from the various videos, but because it’s new, there aren’t too many actual reviews. I had originally booked at the Shangri-La, but sadly the resort has closed because of covid. So looking for alternate options: one week in March for a 2-bed villa. Was luckily able to snag CW seats on avios, but need a good hotel now. Not looking to spend more than £10-12k for 7N all-inclusive for a 2-bedroom villa (which by Maldives standards is just mid-range!)

    • BossBaby says:

If you are looking to stay at Pullman check out Luxury Escapes. They have a deal on at the moment that is much lower than the number you quoted.
We are hopefully going to Maldives in a few weeks (not to Pullman).
If you don’t want to book through an agent, try and get the hotel to match directly. The hotel we are staying at matched the quoted agent price.
