The HfP chat thread – Thursday 19th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/19/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-19th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Bonvoy 60% bonus on points purchased if anyone interested….

    • TGLoyalty says:

      About 15% too expensive.

      • Pangolin says:

        It’s getting closer. A 60% bonus is a 37.5% discount; the last offer was 50% (33% discount).

At 40% I’d give it serious consideration as it’s not too hard to identify opportunities at that level (ie where cash rates get wildly out of whack, such as NYE pricing).

I’d like to get 50% off, but a 100% bonus doesn’t look realistic. This is probably as good as it gets for those that need to buy points for specific redemptions.

        • Matthew says:

I agree. I always aim to use them for outsized value such as last year 30,000 points for grandstand tickets to Abu Dhabi F1 and yacht access all day with free flowing drinks and food 👍

          • JM says:

Is there a forex charge for using a UK card to buy points? StoreFront where you buy the Marriott points with the bonus is priced in USD, not GBP…

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Yes there is.

The old SPG card used to give points with buying points. Now as bonvoy it doesn’t 5% at Marriott would’ve offset the 3% fx charge.

        • TGLoyalty says:

I’m not willing to pay more than 0.5p without a concrete use in the near future.

Rates are so low it doesn’t make sense using points either.

          • Rob says:

I have just booked the Ritz Carlton desert resort in Ras Al Khaimah for 3 nights over Christmas / New Year. Worked out at 1.2p per Bonvoy points, which is excellent.

Good use and would Al Maha. Not sure I see myself there any time soon though 🙁

  • George says:

Hi Guys, new here so please go easy. Just booked a LHR-DXB flight for mid dec on an economy flex fare. Looking to upgrade using miles, currently says not available but to check back etc. Just wondered if anybody had experience doing so? trip is for 2 people so would have to buy miles from emirates to get to the number needed which I am not keen to do in advance if they don’t ever allow mile upgrade on this flight. Just wondered what and when the likelihood is that they do allow miles upgrades?
    Thanks

  • Chef says:

My Nat west rewards is showing 20% off Laithwaites, I wondered if this may stack with the recent £65 wine flyer offer?
£52 would be terrific value for the heavy reds case imo

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Plus 10% on airtime atm.

      • d4ve says:

Airtime on purchases from 25/11 on my account so a few days to wait

        • TGLoyalty says:

Ah you’re right I didn’t read it properly

I’m fully stocked up after the Amex offers so didn’t pay it much attention

        • Andrew says:

          Uhm, taken a second look:-

          “On purchases from 25.11.2019”

          I know 2020 has been a bit of a right-off though…

  • JL says:

I saw someone asking if purchase Harrods gift card online works with Amex promotion. I thought i will give it a try and I can confirm I have received the credit.

  • RI says:

Is booking Hilton Maldives worth spending points on or are you better off paying around 3k for a 5 day stay full board else where with a comparable villa that has a bonus of a pool

Just think of other costs added ie transfer lunch dinner drinks I’m a gold member so breakfast would be free

    • Mo says:

I think points do provide pretty good value, considering the 0.33p valuation by most people a 5-night stay is only costing £1.1k as 5th night is free.

Also includes a daily happy hour for Gold/Diamond members and I’m not sure you’d end up spending ~£2k for 5 days on food etc.

There are a fair few dates with a Water Villa available for the standard 95k points per night which I think adds to the value, though also depends how cash/points rich you are.

  • The Original Nick says:

Evening all. I’ve been using my IHG CC linked to bendy to pay NS&I PB account. I also have a Direct Saver account that I used when the days of the 3v cards where around. Will my IHG CC via bendy work with the Direct Saver account too?

  • Wally1976 says:

Anyone know of any ways to earn points when paying a Nationwide or Principality mortgage? I have Hilton card, IHG free card, virgin free card, Tesco debit card, Lloyd’s Avios card, Free Curve and several Amexes.. Thanks in advance

    • Nick says:

I too would be interested around Principality, but I understand its debit card only

  • JL says:

Has anyone tried paying Intercont using the JL card rather than beardy? Is there any cash advance fees or interest?
