Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 19th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/19/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-19th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What’s the codename for this one going to be?

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2020/nov/18/debit-card-targeting-millennials-is-operating-without-permission

    Something Game of Thrones related?

    • Harry T says:

Something about always paying your debts?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

This was discussed in yesterdays chat thread.

Someone mentioned Lord Tywin… But GoT related no doubt.

    • Anna says:

For those of us who can remember that far back, Lanistar sounds like a 70s disco record label!

    • The Urbanite says:

Might as well call a spade a spade!

Waiting to hear what the FCA can see that the rest of us can’t figure out.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Read my message below. I in no way work in the financial industry, but I do work in complex Engineering. There are too many variables and from the outside it appears too rushed.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Since I first heard it I was wondering if it is another Fyre festival, if it sounds too good to be true…

I just can’t see how they have made a standard sized debit card with a pin machine in it considering it’ll need a battery, microchip, interact with contactless systems etc.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

AND be ready to launch it so quickly. Surely if they have genuinely done it the R&D would have been substantial and probably blown their cover (Visa and MasterCard would be very interested).

Also, where are the patents to protect the tech? Where is the demo video?

    • TGLoyalty says:

The Chiron used to advertise is owned by a YouTuber known as “Lord Aleem”

I don’t know what part he is playing in it but seems to be more than just advertising it. I’d be very wary.

  • Ilga says:

Having followed all the chat in the last few days, I’m wondering if I’m missing out on the opportunity to maximise points earnings from my fee-paying credit cards. I have the beardy one and seagulls – any thoughts?

    • Peter K says:

If you’ve been reading it the past few days out should be clear, surely. I’ve seen it spelt out word for word what to do at least once.

      • Sam says:

I don’t do this myself (need to set aside some time to sort it out and because I only have Seagulls) and I’m not as experienced as other readers here but I think it goes like this – Bendy – Beardy.
If I have followed/understood comments and developments in this area correctly you can’t use Bendy with Seagulls.

  • Eddie says:

Avios appears as an exchange option for RBS Rewards, £10 in rewards=1,170 Avios. Is that means RBS reward black credit card essentially earns 1.17 Avios/£ in supermarkets and 0.58 Avios/£ else where, which would probably be better than HSBC premier.

  • mark2 says:

I have just received an email from Monese offering 10% off a booking with BA using their card, although it does appear that any Mastercard may do.
    terms here https://monese.com/gb/en/promotions/ba10

    • Rhys says:

      lucky you!

    • Rob says:

What’s the promo code? It should be in the email link URL. Monzo is MONZOBA10. Probably MONESEBA10!

      EDIT: Yes, its MONESEBA10

    • Mr. AC says:

Tried to use the code booking a flight for 2 people, failed with “One or more passengers will not benefit from MONESEBA10 as their individual ticket price is less than the minimum spend of per person.”. Tickets were £148 pp

      • Rob says:

That’s because you need to spend £200 per person.

        • Mr. AC says:

Yes, I grasped that (even though neither the terms nor the e-mail mention this).

          • TGLoyalty says:

            It’s in there terms …

To qualify for the Offer the Eligible Participant must spend an accumulative total of £200.00 or more at ba.com or via the British Airways mobile app between 12:01am GMT on 19 November 2020 and 11:59pm GMT on 3December 2020 (the ‘Promotional Period’) for travel commencing from the UK (excluding London City Airport) from 03 December 2020. Valid travel periods and cabins are those that, during the Promotional Period, are available to book on ba.com or the British Airways mobile app which are usually 355 days from booking.

          • Rob says:

It’s in the T&C on the Monzo deal though!

    • YC says:

Anyone tried booking using code but not monese/monzo card? Don’t have either!

    • Jonathan says:

Does anyone know if you can top up a monese account using a credit card via curve for instance without needing curve metal ?

    • Andrew says:

Similar to the (targetted) promotion that Barclaycard was running during October. No codes were required, 10% back on all payments to BA above £200. Max payable £100.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it turned up as a launch offer on MBNA in January.

It’ll be a long time before I manage to spend all the money that BA owe me first though.

  • mark2 says:

    Back to Morrison’s.
If you buy Morrison’s gift cards you get MORE points and when you spend them you get more MORE points including on fuel and gift cards, so 1% rebate rather than 0.5%.
    Every little helps.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Interesting, thank you. So effectively, 2 x £500 GCs would generate £5 in more points. Then again if you spend at Morrisons

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Yes 🙂

        • Amar says:

Doesn’t that mean you could just do that in a continuous cycle forever? I.e. buy £1,000 of Morrisons gift cards (and get More points). . . .then use those to buy £1,000 of Morissons gift cards (and get More points) . . . and so on. . .

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

Theoretically yes. But I believe Morrisons gift cards are capped at £50 per card. So would be a lot of effort for nothing. Anyway I suggest we stop this conversation here or else they’ll find a fix ASAP!

          • Chef says:

Morrison’s gift cards are up to £250

      • Vit says:

        Correct. 😉

  • Maria says:

I booked a return flight to Dubai with 2-4-1 and 50% Avios, F on way in and CW on way back. I need to move it, but what’s best to do to be able to keep the 50% avios, get a voucher or move it to a different date? Thank you

    • Louise K says:

If you cancel and get a voucher it will be for the amount of avios and tax you paid, it will not allow you to book a new flight at the 50% off rate.

You can try and change the booking (assuming there is avios availability) and see what happens. I think the taxes had to be exactly what you paid before, otherwise it will not let you change and keep the old rates.

      • Maria says:

Thank you! I’ll try to move it then.

        • Jonathan says:

When the promotion was still active you could make a booking within the valid dates then shift it back to the later dates you wanted keeping the 50% discount (I did it) but the Taxes & Fees must be identical. After a couple of failed attempts where there was a small (<£10) difference I realised it was the Heathrow Passenger Service Charge that was changing. They have a High, Shoulder & Low season so make sure they match up. Air Passenger Duty also increases slightly in April which may scupper you. You can do redemption searches to get the prices but make sure you click all the way through to payment page as the initial figures are often wrong.

I’ve got no idea if this option still works but nothing to lose by trying.

    • Rob says:

You can’t. Any change will trigger a reprice of the 50% Avios. Your best bet is to wait to see if BA cancels the flight – THEN you can move with no penalty.

  • H says:

Does anyone know if the withdrawn IHG premium card will come back? If I apply for the free one and the premium becomes available again, is it possible to upgrade? Can the free IHG card bill be paid off by HSBC WE directly (without “bendy” and without attracting any fees / interest on either end?)

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Discreet products. You would have to apply for the premium if they re-launch it. You can hold both at the same time.

      Yes and no fees.

  • S says:

Has anyone successfully changed their Curve “Commerical” card to “Personal” and not had their limits impacted?

I have been in touch with CS and they have re-assured me that nothing will change, but this goes against what is being reported on here – thanks

    • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

yes, after upgrading last week to metal (from free), my card appears to have been changed from “Commercial” to personal without impacting my 500k annual limit

      • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

actually, scratch that – just been to look in the app and indeed, I’ve had my limits downgraded to 300k annual. That must have happened very recently as immediately after the upgrade to metal I was still on 500k annual.

        • mark2 says:

Did your spending for the current year go to zero?

        • S says:

Oh thanks, how much are you using? I’ve got the same limits, used £128,000 so far

          • Peter K says:

I got downgraded to £1k but complained and then upgraded to £100k. Still no where near the £300k I had pre metal but it’ll do for now.

          • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

planning to use the majority of that 300k limit, I was up against the 100k limit before it got raised

    • Matty says:

My limits were not altered when I changed from Commercial to Personal in the summer. When I upgraded to Metal, a couple of months ago, the limits were lowered but the spend reset to zero.

      • Jonathan says:

Also had same issue upgrading to Metal & been told multiple times they have no record of my previous 300k limit (now 100k). I think the end is probably in sight based on flurry of comments looking for a way into the game so probably won’t make a big difference anyway.

    • Chas says:

When I changed to personal several months ago, my monthly and annual limits remained the same (50k and 300k), but my daily reduced from 5k to 4.5k. I queried this, and was told that 4.5k was the maximum allowed on a personal card. A friend of mine had a similar experience, with his 7k daily reducing to 4.5k, with monthly and annual unchanged. Of course the re-setting of the utilisation of those limits is a happy bonus.
