The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 18th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/18/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-18th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but I was looking at my Amex offers and it looks like the Marriott offer has been extended to the end of the year.

  • Amar says:

Possibly a silly question – Can you buy something like an Etihad Gift card using the Amex offer? I won’t be flying any time soon but it may be worth something if allowed to be transferred . . . . I have the Etihad £250 off on 4 of my cards and it’s a shame not to capitalise on it

    • Andrew says:

Not sure what their covid policy is but you could book a flight and then cancel it for a voucher, several times, then pool the vouchers to use against one flight. This is what was discussed with the QR £100 off.

  • Ian says:

Am I missing something, or has the American Express travel page been down for a few days?

  • Sam says:

Does anybody know the fee that the FOS charge the company/financial institution when they receive a complaint against it? Thanks

  • IslandDweller says:

Reports on Flyertalk that Heathrow airport are removing their financial support for free bus use on tfl buses around the airport. Expected to take effect in early 2021

    • Rob says:

      Correct. Story tomorrow.

    • Lady London says:

Starts 1st Jan apparently whilst Heathrow has only just finished asking the UK government to give it some free money as “they’re not making the profit they’;re used to ” or something similar. Apparently the owners of Heathrow have been told to ask their shareholders for money instead – for now.

Perhaps withdrawal of bus funding was just a hissy fit by Heathrow then? or perhaps another public subsidy they’ve been getting has just ended… who knows ?

  • Grant says:

Has anyone been asked to provide proof of identity and address during the Amex application process? I put through an application earlier this week, and as seems to be the norm for me now, it didn’t give me a decision straight away.

I missed a call from an 0800 number today and the message left was from Amex to call them back. I did so and the CS rep said there was no record of a pending application. An email has just arrived now asking for my proof of identify docs. It all looks legit – the email address and web links all go to verified Amex pages, but I’ve never had this before which means I can’t help but feel suspicious.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

It was a whole ago that I applied, but I think I had to send a pic of passport and bank statement.

    • Sukes says:

Yes a family member had this on Gold credit card recently. Her 1st account with Amex. Got approved, was using card all fine. Few days later she got email requesting ID & to provide by return email, not by the Amex secure upload website. It looked cut & paste & had typos. Contacted CS who knew nothing about it and requested we forward email to their fraud team – which we did! Then card stopped working….rang the fraud team who said the email was in fact genuine, for regulatory reasons they are ringfenced from CS so CS never know anything about such requests, and they can’t access the document centre. Emailed the docs and card was unblocked 48hrs later. All a bit of a mess given how gd Amex usually are with comms plus the barrage of info we get to watch out for card fraud red flags.

  • Hugh says:

I applied for a new American Express gold rewards credit card a couple of weeks ago. I was not quizzed about my identity or bank account. The card came in about three days. Credit limit lower than two years ago.
