Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 18th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/18/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-18th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I just cancelled the wine plan with LW now that its all safely in my cellar. The chat is actually a bot and it takes seconds to do it. No need to call or email.

  • Mike says:

There is something wrong with the Amex targeting system for some merchants. With Hilton, across our family we would get the targeted email inviting us to save the offers, we even had a flyer in the post, but never could we save the offer to our cards because it wasn’t there in the list. It was really difficult to prove to Amex we were targeted and involved uploading pics of the flyer and screenshots of emails. On chat, they have a feature to let them see your Amex login screen to prove its not there and we are just a bit too thick to press “Save to Card”.

Earlier this year, before CV hit, the App showed a reminder to use the Hilton offer where they advertise offers within your transaction lines. Once again, nothing to save and needed to be screenshot to be added.

Its very possible you are targeted, but Amex’s crap IT means you will never know and can’t make use of it. They’re not interested in fixing it. We cancelled two of our three PRG due to this and other reasons before fee renewal.

Thanks LL. So no fees from VA or IHG if I use directly?

  • Anthony says:

Does anyone have any idea when the recently launched Apple products (iPhone 12 and watch 6) will be eligible for avios via the BA e store? Based on previous years it’s roughly two months post release but varies a lot

    • Sina says:

Not sure about Avios, but you can buy at Harrods, if you have status. I got 5000 points equal to £50!

    • Mouse says:

You can check the list of ineligible products and work out the most recently launched ineligible vs most recently launched eligible. I did it a while ago, don’t remember exactly but I think it was between 6 months and a year.

      • AndyF says:

I always buy from John Lewis extended guarantee and their insurance is incredible having claimed no excess and cheaper than competitors. I earnt half the rate that is shown in the ba website.

Heathrow free bus travel to end next year – amongst other changes

    • Lady London says:

And Heathrow had the cheek to ask the UK government for a gift of money so they could keep making their usual profit?

The UK government apparently told BAA (owned bySpanish interests Ferrovial) to ask their.shareholders to come up with some cash like everybody else has to….

  • Alex Dickinson says:

Those using bendy to feed beardy or other options, are you paying for the monthly version (£150 a year) or just taking the 1.5% hit each time and factoring that into the cost per point when redeeming?

    • Tom says:

It makes no sense to pay the 1.5% fee for points unless you need a small number to push your stash over what you need for a redemption.

    • memesweeper says:

I paid annually. Not for beardy, for HMRC. You need to put a lot through for it to be worth it.

  • Tim says:

Can I ask for a Metro Bank referral please?

  • Jonny says:

BA flight cancellations – I have an Avios flight cancelled in a few weeks’ time. I may move the flight to summer 2021 (which will still be within 355 days of the original booking).

Must I make any changes (or take an Avios refund) prior to the original departure date of the flight? Or will the option still be open to be afterwards? thanks

    • Oli says:

I had Avios flight for last August that were cancelled. I still have not requested a refund, I case I can use them for later as apparently it does not need to have Avios availability to move them.
I had another flight for last August, which I paid with cash, I waited until October to request the refund, no problem.

      • Jonny says:

thanks, yes I was hoping to hold off changing the date until i have a better idea of when I’d like to travel

        • memesweeper says:

I have rebooked Avios redemptions four times following cancellations. In theory you can book whatever dates you want. In practice it can be difficult depending on training and BA policies. Last summer it was hard, involving arguments and escalations with call centre staff, and impossible online. I’ve done two rebooking this week for cancellations of Avios bookings where the future date I want had no redemption availability. Did one online, the other on the phone, no problem. It seems to me right now is a good time to rebook if you’ve had a cancellation. Call centre instructions may change again in future. However, legally, you are right, hold out until just before the cancelled flight to maximise your flexibility.

      • lgflyer says:

I called BA the other day to request a refund of an Avios flight for July that was cancelled. The lady on the phone got very angry beacuse I did not cancel “on time”. I tried to explain that the ticket is valid for 365 days and I could have changed it to another date, that’s why I did not ask for the refund earlier. She insisted that I should have requested the refund before the flight date and that it was a lot of work for them having to do the refund after the flight date has passed.
After I apologised she processed the avios refund and the cash arrived within a week.
So it’s possible but you might encounter some unhappy agents…
