The HfP chat thread – Monday 16th November

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/16/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-16th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Wanted to check, there was talk of a promo/discount code working for ‘The Wine Flyer’. Did this work and if it did, what was it?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

My Amex has £20 off £75 spend on it.

I ordered the welcome 12 bottle box (seasons reds @ £65) and added 2 cheap bottles on top to give £76.98 for 14 bottles Thursday evening.

£20 credit landed this morning and the wine arrives within the next 2 hours.

Could be a better use, but at £4.07 per bottle I cannot complain.

      • Nick_C says:

And four free wine tumblers presumably, which are very nice and get used on a daily basis in our house.

        • stevenhp1987 says:

Yes, it comes with 4 tumblers (up from the usual 2).

We have too many of these wine tumblers in our house.

Use them all the time and have a large supply when some break!

    • Michael C says:

NB it says “must be billed by 17 Nov…and if they are slow to bill you, tough boobies”!

      • stevenhp1987 says:

        They charge on dispatch.

I ordered Thursday evening (21:51). They charged me Friday morning (9:50).

It’s likely they would charge for this tomorrow and just meet the deadline.

        • Jane says:

anyone had any luck using the blue light card code x2 ? I know you generate a new one each time but it still seems to be saying ‘ not allowed used before’

          • Anna says:

I’ve used it more than once but you may need to wait a month or something between generating codes.

    • Paul says:

Failed for me as I already had a Laithwaite discount 6 years ago!

      • stevenhp1987 says:

Odd. Both me and the wife have had the introductory offer at least once a year on the same account!

    • Mike says:

I placed a BA wine flyer order for:

      20 bottles Czech lager
      12 box mystery reds case
1 extra bottle of Sav Blanc to bring total >£120 (total was ~£123 I think)

This triggered free delivery and a free bottle of Champagne Dider Chopin (automatic)

Then voucher code for £40 off >£100 brought the total to ~£83.

Not sure if I’m allowed to share the voucher code here.

Then AMEX £20 off £75 triggered, making it ~£63 total for 20 beers, 13 wines and a bottle of bubbly…

  • Tobes says:

Is it possible to claim the ‘free’ wine from opening a Virgin current account, if you don’t use the switching service? In other words, I don’t want to close an existing current account elsewhere.

    • Rhys says:

Doesn’t look like it, but easy enough to open a Monzo or Starling and switch that, that’s what I’ve done

      • Nick_C says:

Also possible to open a second account with a traditional bank that you currently use. I instantly opened a second Halifax account to switch to Metro Bank (although you need to wait for the debit card before you can complete the switch form).

(Don’t forget that you also need two DDs and deposit £1k in the savings account for a while.)

  • David says:

Canary Islands – the requirement to have a negative covid test to stay at “tourist accommodation” – would this apply to Airbnbs?

Also does the requirement to have a negative covid test to enter Spain from 23/11 also apply to the Canaries, rendering the above “tourist accommodation” loophole irrelevant?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I would say yes as you can’t live / live in an AirBnB so what else could it be?

Plus, I think I read somewhere the law is worded as staying at a location other than a primary residences (or words to that affect)

      • David says:

Thanks, I guess I was just wondering along the lines of if at an Airbnb who could enforce it? Obviously at hotels presumably the check in desks would be enforcing however I’ve stayed at a number of Airbnbs that are self check in.

Given the specific wording around “tourist accommodation” I also presume the tests aren’t checked upon entry to the islands.

        • Harry T says:

Maybe it can’t be enforced, but the legal ramifications could be rather profound if caught. Also, you need to consider the ethical perspective here.

          • Anna says:

Indeed, you might want to watch the video footage of a Labour councillor being dragged out of a swimming pool in Tenerife by the police earlier this year; she was then locked in a police cell in her bikini where she spent the next 24 hours. Never assume “enforcement” means the same thing everywhere!

        • Michael C says:

But yes, David, the new 23 Nov. law is national anyway, so renders the regional law redundant in that sense.

    • Optimus Prime says:

Where did you read that only applies to tourist accommodations? It does apply to everyone, so a spanish expat thinking of visiting their parents for christmas and staying at their place needs the PCR too.

      • David says:

        Thanks all.
@Optimus – FCO website specifically states “if you’re travelling to the Canary Islands and are booked into regulated tourist accommodation, you will be obliged to:

produce an official, negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours earlier, when checking in to your accommodation”

Hence my original question, “regulated tourist accommodation” is fairly vague.

  • John says:

Always converted my Tesco points to vouchers on demand on my Tesco app.
Have been unable to do this for last week.
Anyone having same problem or know if they have removed this facility.
    Thanks

    • Nick_C says:

Been mentioned before. Use the web site.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I thought it had never worked in the app??

      • Sandgrounder says:

App has always worked fine for me, I have just done it again now to check, email came straight through.

        • John says:

          Think I mis-worded this.
Not looking to convert Tesco voucher to a specific retailer.
Looking to convert my points to a Tesco coupon instead of waiting for Tesco to convert them every 3 months

  • The Lord says:

Has anyone tried using the Amex offer for Maybourne Hotel Group restaurants and bars (spend £75 get £25 back) on a gift card? Terms say not eligible but wondering if that is in fact the case. Thanks

    • TGLoyalty says:

unless the restaurant itself sells the gift card and not the hotel front desk it won’t work.

  • Grant says:

Does the free (Everyday) version of the Platinum C@shback Amex generate a referall bonus for the referer?

  • Mike says:

Is there any word on whether BA will have reduced status tier point thresholds in 2021?

Looks like I might be ending 2020 about 80TP short of earning silver under the reduced 450TP requirement. I’m currently Bronze and wondering whether it’s worth doing a TP run – my collection year ends in Jan…

    • ChrisC says:

My collection year ended on the 9th November. The app is showing as me needing 450 TPs to earn silver in my new year.

As to earning silver in your current year it depends on how much use you’ll get for it in 2021.

If you got silver now you’d have it until February 2022 (rest of your current year plus the next year)

If you got it early in your new year you’d have it until Feb 2023

  • Andrew says:

    Cazoo (Used Car Site)

    Spend £1,000 get £250 back.
