The HfP chat thread – Sunday 15th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/15/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-15th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

There’s been some recent mentions of getting 10% off at Morrisons with a student discount. Is this a live offer at the moment?

I have my student email address linked to my account but the only benefits I can see are the occasional special offer. The only mention of 10% off that I can see from a Google search is from some trial done in 2016.

  • Anna says:

Well regardless of the Ts and Cs, I’ve got a confirmed booking for the 1 bedroom Club Intercontinental Suite and an email promising me an upgrade to the 2 bedroom one! It’s not my fault if the staff don’t know their own policies lol.

    • Anna says:

That was to Ghengis – looks like I’m now suffering from the jumping around responses as well!

    • Genghis says:

It’s just the upgrade that’s excluded, not the original booking on “BOGOF”.

All you can do is argue your case, ie the email was a representation and hence part of the contract. The staff obviously just got it wrong. Then again, the terms are openly available and the suites specifically excluded as upgrades.
I’m just a “barrack room lawyer”. Lol.

      • memesweeper says:

Technically, the email was a *misrepresentation* and trumps T&Cs you are made aware of afterwards. Misrepresentation Act. IANAL.

        • Anna says:

Well that would explain why they’d suddenly decided to email me badgering me to “confirm” my booking was correct with no suite upgrade … ! Presumably if I’d accepted, that would be a contract as well.

          • Anna says:

We could live without the upgrade but the sneaky way they’ve gone about this – trying to get me to agree there’s no upgrade, despite what I was previously told (in writing) and now trying to say that is a generic reference to the Ambassador terms (when the email says, “As per our conversation you are eligble for a one category upgrade on this booking”), I now want to dig my heels in!

        • Lady London says:

I would send them a polite note back explaining why you need the two-suite. IIRC from what you’ve said, your son is not ready to be in his own room so your practice is always to book.suites. Then remind them how grateful you were to have their earlier response confirming a 2brm suite will be allocated to your booking which took a weight off your mind. Given their email about your booking had confirmed it you request them ro retain their email confirmation of this and add a note to your booking that this has been confirmed to you to avoid any confusion at checkin… they will certainly ‘try it on’ at checkin unless they are relatively empty, otherwise

          • Anna says:

If they had just admitted it was a mistake I wouldn’t be that bothered, but they’ve really tied themselves up in knots now! Will do – thanks.

  • Liz says:

I know several people have had issues buying Amazon GC’s from Morrisons – thought I would try it today and both cards failed. I don’t normally check the activation slips but made sure I did at the till. Supervisor immediately refunded my £200 and then removed all the cards from the shelf (Dundee) – so I lost out on the 10% which is a bummer as I only had it on one card!

    • memesweeper says:

Conversely, I managed to cash in most of my Morrissons GCs for John Lewis GCs at a nearby store. Took three passes through the tills, and some very funny looks, but it worked. 10% off my new iPhone — result — many thanks to everyone here who shares hints and tips 🙂

      • Freddy says:

My saga continues with Morrisons and the Amazon gift card debacle. No-one wants to take responsibility for it so it’ll probably end up as a chargeback shortly

      • Kevin says:

Mind to share how did you cash in for John Lewis GC?

    • ClubX says:

I hate the shop in Dundee! The one in Arbroath is better — for both staff and VS/AW opportunities 😉

    • TGLoyalty says:

Very odd I picked up £250 yesterday and already applied to my account and bought what I needed!

    • rams1981 says:

If not in a hurry best bet is to buy morissons gift cards and then use these to buy the gift cards you actually want

      • Liz says:

I’ve just checked my Amex account and the transaction for the refund of £200 is showing as a £200 transaction – not a minus £200 transaction. I do have the receipts showing a minus amount. Will need to wait till it clears pending. I should have purchased Morrisons GC’s instead!

    • The real John says:

I bought 4x £25 amazon on Thursday and they all activated fine

      • TGLoyalty says:

I’ve just grabbed a couple more £250 cards no issue and Amazon balance now +500.

        • Lee says:

Bought 4x£250 Amazon GCs then activated at the car park just to make sure there was no issues. Looks really suspicious to the security I guess. Balance now +£1500, hope to get a new iPad and iPhone as Christmas gift.

  • memesweeper says:

My Curve Metal annual / daily limits have been dropped from 500 / 7 to 300 / 4.5 k … seems to coincide with the issuing of a new (personal) card. Anyone had the same experience? any point in me complaining? 95% of my spend is government (Ernie, VAT and other taxes). I was on track to spend close to the previous (higher) limit this year, although I suspect that level of spend won’t be sustained for the next six months or so.

    • Catman says:

I think 4.5K is the daily limit on the personal card. Presumably your annual spend has been reset to 0, if so I would start spending and when you get close to the 300K then ask for an increase…..

    • johnny_c-l says:

Exact same change for me when I changed to personal.

I haven’t asked them to change my limits back so can’t offer much advice on that front.

  • Nick says:

A memory question. Does anyone know roughly when Atlantis Palm Dubai offers 25% off for being an Amex card holder? I know I saw it a couple of times this year, just cannot recall when

  • Paul says:

Just noticed the morrisons offer on my plat and bonvoy. Not on bapp.

Whats the highest amount people have bought? 1k? 10k?

    • TGLoyalty says:

You can do at least £1500-2000 in one transaction via self checkout. Just have a few items with some weight to register on the scales.

  • Bob says:

anyone used bendy to pay transferwise?

  • The real John says:

Hilton should increase the silver benefits slightly then change the US credit cards to offer silver and gold instead of gold and diamond
