The HfP chat thread – Saturday 14th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/14/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-14th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone tried arguing for a Covid fee refund, etc for the Bonvoy/SPG amex?

    • Blenz101 says:

On the basis of what? All of the card benefits and earning rates unaffected by the pandemic.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Not technically true as the main benefit is being able to earn more in Marriott hotels which has most definitely been affected by lockdowns and travel restrictions.

They offered me extra point per £ for 3 months in April but I declined as 1) I wasn’t going to use it and 2) we got 6k when I signed back up.

        • Blenz101 says:

There is a limited time offer currently to encourage spend at Marriott hotels (10 points per £) but otherwise the earn rate is 2 points per £, same rate as everywhere else.

  • jason says:

Anyone know if you can use Morrison gift cards to buy other gift cards from their stores?
    thanks

  • Chas says:

A quick reminder for anyone using up any Selfridges offer on their Amex (my spend £150 get £30 expires tomorrow), if you go through the BA shopping portal you can get 14 Avios per £. With my £100 off on my Platinum (the offer valid at M&S, Waitrose, Selfridges etc) , my £150 spend should have cost me just £6 net…

    • Andrew says:

And Selfridges has their annual Christmas Comes Early 20% off promotion this weekend.

    • Cat says:

I got my Xmas order of panettone, H&H Madeira, Port and some chocolate truffles for a sizeable discount, after stocking up on £100 of freebie TTD wine at Sainsbury’s yesterday using Double Up and a Godiva chocolate hamper from Harrods for £26 with the Platinum offer.
That should all make a likely locked-down Xmas slightly more bearable!

      • old bob says:

I was in Sainsburys recently, and bought a couple of TTD bottles, I couldn’t taste any difference at all, I think its a marketing con myself.

      • Polly says:

Wow, don’t eat it all at once, kiddo! That’s some haul!

        • Cat says:

I know! Thank goodness for my newly acquired lockdown 2.0 cross-trainer, now that the gyms are closed!

          • Polly says:

Wow, that’s impressive, ever so grateful for our cross trainer, actually managed to lose some weight last lockdown. This time, not so easy…

          • Cat says:

You haven’t injured yourself again, have you?

I put on a fair bit of lockdown lard last time around, and then found my mad hiking antics in the summer really difficult at first (The Cotswold Way, and about 120 miles of the S W Coast Path). Hopefully this time I won’t end up putting on the weight and then starting from scratch getting back in shape yet again!

Plus it makes it easier to justify all of that chocolate!

    • Polly says:

Excellent result. No plat now, so not getting those nice offers. But that’s ok.

  • Peter K says:

Someone (yesterday?) mentioned about the post office online saver being good to set up a direct debit on if required for a bank account swap, and that you can also top up with a debit card.

Just a heads up that curve cards are not allowed, tried with metal and non metal and it wouldn’t accept either.

    • Genghis says:

Good for random cards you may want to liquidate though.

      • S says:

What underlying card have you got linked?

        • Peter K says:

Underlying card not relevant. When you put the curve card number in it just says the card type is not supported or something similar, before your even get a chance to add in expiry date, name on card etc

    • 747_Brat says:

Bendy also doesn’t work in-store in Post Office branches, even for postal transactions. I have tried it multiple times, and every time it got declined!

    • Nick_C says:

I said you can top up that account with a DC. But I didn’t say which one 😉

I’m not trying to drive you around the bend Peter.

      • Peter K says:

Fair enough. I did think of a couple of debit cards that you might have in mind that I don’t own but thought I’d flag it up in case it matters to anyone else 🙂

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I tried this account a long time ago and no luck with bendy.

      • Nick_C says:

PO Money rejects bendy. But accepts other useful cards.

        • The Urbanite says:

PO Money Online, I’ve had no joy with it. In fact I’ve had problems getting my money back after them rejecting cards after taking the auth. I’ve not found it any use for liquidating cards that can’t be very easily used elsewhere.

        • AviosNewbie says:

like which? M&M? or something else…?

  • Tom says:

I use a BAPP Amex for my daily and travel spend, I need to make a 4K purchase just before christmas and they don’t accept Amex, what is the best non amex cc to apply for. Anything is better than my debit card!! TIA

    • Lady London says:

IHG seems to be the one people are mentioning here that gives quite a bit of flexibility.

    • Lady London says:

Ps is it worth the cost of billhop? 3pc

      • Anna says:

IHG premium card was withdrawn a few months ago for new applicants but on the free one you would get 10k points for £500 (I think) spend, plus 4k for the £4k spend which would get you a night in a Holiday Inn if you didn’t carry on using the card!
Billhop – definitely a possibility but you have to weigh up whether the fee would be offset by any points or bonuses you would earn.

        • Polly says:

Yep, the 3% soon adds up, l only use it when needed a 241 in a hurry, and had already pre bought many many gift cards

    • Cookie says:

      Can you pay by PayPal?

  • Baji Nahid says:

Selfridges used to sell iphones but they’re now removed them from their website, really wanted to stack up a few offers to get them a little cheaper :@ Ah well!

Also really curious to know from others, that had an amex card during black friday, did you guys receive a lot of offers back then during the black friday period?

    • Andrew says:

Nothing of note that I recall. For Amex, December is all about Shop Small -usually, but who knows this year.

      • Baji Nahid says:

        Thanks andrew,

I am just curious to know about the amount of offers that would appear on the cards at the minute with it being ‘black november’ or ‘black friday’

  • Marcus says:

Anyone know if the Amex SLH offer (£100 for £350 spent) works if you use other venues other than SLH website? Specifically, would it work if you book directly or through Bon Vivante?

  • YC says:

Hi @HarryT may I know what perks you got by staying at Villa Deluxe room at the Ritz-Carlton Abama? I’m platinum if that makes a difference at RCs

    • Harry T says:

I was upgraded to a suite, which is technically above and beyond the T&Cs (only titanium and above should get suites at RC). You also get free breakfast as Platinum, I’m told – it was included in my rate.

As Plat, I was given the choice of three out of five benefits: 10% off F&B, 10% off laundry, extension of massage by 30 mins, one free spas pass, two cocktails in lobby lounge.

      Villa Club:
Free hot and cold tapas, with soft drinks from 11.30 to 13.00.
Free sweet treats tapas and soft drinks at 16.00 to 17.30.
Sunset cocktails – free tapas and alcoholic drinks, including cocktail of the day, from 18.00 to 19.00.
Free soft drinks and light snacks by the pool all day.

Each row of villas has its own pool so it’s not busy at all.

      • YC says:

Amazing thank you! 2 last questions!

Did u book the base room to start?

Do u know if the basic villa deluxe qualifies for the club? Can’t find anything on the marriott site
