The HfP chat thread – Friday 13th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-13th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

My Hilton Honors points from the Hilton Barclaycard, for October, have today finally arrived. Others may want to check accounts.

  • alan says:

Called to discuss cancelling platinum card
    Offered 30k points
During the stay with us spiel was also proactively told that shop small would be returning in December, and that the marketing department are confirming the dates

    • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

great to hear shop small is returning! The annual xmas bonus

    • Harry T says:

      Good news!

    • Mark says:

I have 3 Amex cards… Would it be an ‘abuse’ of the promo if I split a transaction onto 3 separate cards to take advantage of Shop Small?

      • Sloth says:

Do it once or twice and you’ll be ok. Do it 10 times and they won’t be happy

        • Harry T says:

Agree with this comment by Sloth. Certain members of the community here have been banned by amex in the past for enthusiastic and prolific bill splitting.

          • Mark says:

Thanks guys. But if it’s a supp card that’ll be fine right?

          • Sloth says:

In a way doing it with a supp is worse since they are both on the same account…

          • Polly says:

We take the supps belonging to the other family members, so the 2, 3 or 4 x £10 are on different accounts for the same restaurant etc. Will buy more restaurant gift cards to use in Jan. Have to keep a list tho.
Whispers about a further EOTHO coming our way in January. So a £20 meal pp actually cost £5 pp. get a kick out of that one. Currently using up our gift cards bought in recent SS. Makes our takeaways half price.
Cook do not like putting 3 or 4 x £10 through on different cards tho. Were quite snooty about the last SS. Sighing with the effort!

    • Harry T says:

Doesn’t make any difference if it’s a supp card. Amex doesn’t like it when people split the bill across multiple cards. Essentially; you have to think about how it looks – if you go out for dinner with the missus and split the bill across two cards, and it’s not exactly £10 each, that looks reasonable. But if you go to the corner shop and split your groceries etc across three primary cards and two supps, it looks like abuse to them.

      • Polly says:

Our local eats are great, always. Ask how many cards..and just split the bill evenly, so usually an odd amount per each different card..seems to work. They really don’t care once they get their tips etc included.
But, yes, wise to be a little cautious, so not on the same card.

      • Crafty says:

Polly, which Cook do you use? The one in Hale was indeed snooty in response to my £10 gift card purchase, and took an age to process it, possibly deliberately to discourage further such; if so it worked.

        • Polly says:

          Crafty.
It’s the Weybridge Cook. While l am in there paying my x several £10, loads of picks ups sent out regularly around £100. So my little sale really bothers them! It actually put me off using up the last of our cards. And we do buy the meals ongoing, and give the gift cards to daughters. Really nicely presented, l must say, and much appreciated gifts too.

    • Chris says:

Can I ask whether you phoned in working office hours?

  • Chris says:

Anyone has news about the “new” miles and more credit VISA card? (no more Diners & MC?!) – Annual fee? Is it still going to be £79?

  • Sina says:

UK version of the Miles&More charge card (The mastercard version) is no longer available for new applications, and their website shows a new Visa card coming in Summer 2021!

Also they’ve removed the login for existing clients 😂 which is moronic! I had to look for the login page! 😬
