The HfP chat thread – Friday 13th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-13th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Are there any plans to improve the alignment of nested replies?
It’s not always easy to tell which post is a reply to what post.

For anyone using Wineflyer £20 off £75 spend before it ends
on their web-page an advert flashes round 1 of 3 which says Christmas offer buy 24 bottles get free champs
there are exclusions if you click through it
ie new wine club offer of 12 case £100 off is excluded
But if you take it as read Christmas offer free champagne for “ANY” 24-bottle orders if you ring they will honor the offer
just had a free bottle of champagne added to my order
i actually hadn’t clicked through so hadn’t seen exclusions
its the mustard color advert on their site

    @Nick_C & @Jane
You both mentioned on yesterday’s thread that one can set-up a direct debit for Post Office accounts. Please could you confirm what Post Office financial product can this be done for?
    Thanks.

I could never get it to work, but Ecology Building Society may still be available, although not easy to manage.

      https://www.postoffice.co.uk/savings-accounts/online-saver

Pays 0.4% interest for a year, which might look attractive in a couple of months!

“Make as many deposits as you like. Just log in to your account and follow the instructions to transfer money from your account, debit card or another eligible Post Office Money savings account”

Transferring in from your account means a Direct Debit.

And you might find depositing by debit card useful 😉

Thank you very much Nick for this information.
        Cheers!

PO savings has awful website and awful service. I have an account paying 0.01% which takes a £1 DD every month which I promptly withdraw when I can be bothered. It took 30 days for me to get the DD changed to a new account that needed a DD online, because of the poor design of the website.

Some advice please re: Hotel Progarmmes – status match to Hilton Diamond.

I’ve been Hilton Diamond for a number of years and have been a slave to chasing renewal each year. I’m now Diamond to at least March 2022 and have already 16 nights booked in 2021. I usually stay at the higher end properties (Conrad / Waldork Astoria) but I’m never blown away by the 5* status of most of these resorts.
I’m hoping to get away for a month from mid December to escape the UK winter. Had flights booked to Bangkok (cancelled this week by BA). Luckily I also have back up flights to Kuala Lumpur not yet cancelled and now also Cape Town (as SA seems to be openig up).
If I go to Cape Town then Marriott seems the sensible option to status match to. What about KL – what would peole advise as the best properties and thus Hotel Progamme to status match to please?

    • Rob says:

Ironically Hilton KL is generally seen as an excellent choice – I have stayed there myself albeit a long time ago. Plenty of excellent options there – to be honest I’d be tempted to try a few different places in diffferent areas if you’re going for a month.

      • John says:

        Thanks Rob
I’ve stayed in the Hilton KL on a few occaision whilst passing through the city, it’s nice but certainly not a top-end 5 luxury.

    • Mark says:

Hilton KL is fine, more than fine, but not top-tier luxury like John said. Very wide and decent breakfast spread though.

Stayed at the DoubleTree too. Was decent.

      • Crafty says:

We love Hilton KL, but I agree it isn’t a luxury hotel. It’s a very nice hotel, and we’ve never had to pay more than about £50 a night for a nice big spacious room.

      • John Gallagher says:

Well BA today cancelled the KUL-LHR flight and as rules to enter Malaysia exclude me at the moment looks like I’ll have to delay this one too 🙁
Hope Cape Town holds now 🙂

  • Vin says:

Interesting chat with BA cust serv today (did respond in less than a minute which is a first !). Had flights booked from MAN-LHR-MUC first week December. Recd email stating some of the flights had been cancelled and whilst I was evaluating my options I recd another email a few days later stating I’d been re-booked on flights on different days to the original booking. Called them and the agent assumed I’d rebooked them online – which I hadn’t.
A ‘supervisor discussion’ later I was told that the system had automatically rebooked me to the nearest available flights/dates and this was now the default and if the alternatives weren’t suitable then the customer has to call to change/rebook. I thought this was odd (never happened with me before) and so did the agent who then agreed to a full cash refund (which was declined earlier in the conversation) as the new dates/times were unsuitable.
Anyone else with a similar experience ?

  • Ray says:

Amex customer service – currently have a personal platinum, and applied for a business gold a month ago obviously didn’t expect to get the bonus 20k points if you spend £3,000 as per their new t&cs. However queried it with an agent via Amex chat a week ago (nicely) who said I wasn’t eligible but he would speak to the membership rewards team. They came back today and agreed to give me the bonus 20k points! Happy days, if anyone is in a similar position worth messaging them 🙂

  • Zoe says:

Trying to combine a BAwineflyer November offer with my £20 back from Amex when I spend £75, I can’t see to add another bottle or beer to bring my £63 case up to the £75, do I need to ring them? Or am I just being blonde?

    • Nick_C says:

Add the introductory case to your shopping basket.

Then, from your basket, click on “offers” then “top offers”, then sort by price.

Look for wines that are £5.99 or £6.99 when you buy 12 or more, and add a couple of bottles.

    • Chris Heyes says:

Zoe i just as Nick_C said added to basket then went to wines and picked various wines out adding each wine to Basket in my case made my basket up with another dif 12 bottles until it came to 24 bottles then claimed free bottle of champagne by phone as it didn’t come on my order (my 12 bottles included 4 champagnes)

Anyone having issues with the old maxmoolahreturn app? Haven’t been able to load it up for a few days now.
