The HfP chat thread – Thursday 12th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/12/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-12th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card

Are Virgin still offering £40 off for cards that are due to renew in the next month or so?

    • Leigh says:

My card renewal is due next month and received an email from Virgin: “As promised when we emailed you in July, we’re refunding £40 of your annual card fee. “

  • Patrick says:

Hi Rob, do you know when the £32 fee for Eurostar redemptions will be introduced? I know that in October it got delayed, but there’s no precise date as to how long the hiatus will be. Thanks in advance!

    • Rob says:

No, not heard anything since they told me (the day before) that it would be delayed.

This used to Shoestring’s turf, but I’ve not seen the pussycat diablo around for a while…

Does anyone know of any offers on currently for NowTv, specifically for a weekend or a week’s Sky Sports pass? (But not a month’s.)

Just discovered that The Masters is no longer live on the Beeb on the Sat/Sun days 🙁 … I have been watching their coverage since 1986, hence the massive disappointment. Any tips sorely appreciated!

    • Grant says:

I have also been looking for similar. I think the weekend / week passes are a thing of the past and its either a day or a month pass now. Best price I’ve seen for a month pass is £26.59 and I can’t see a day pass for less than the offical £9.99

      • Simon says:

Thanks, Grant. Sad times. The dulcet tones of Uncle Peter Alliss and his blithely un-pc anecdotes will be a terrible loss. 🙂

do people still ebay their NOW TV vouchers?

Re Amex Plat retention: rang this afternoon & put straight through to Brighton. Offered 35k – this was the only retention request I’ve made this yr. Been with Amex 10Y but not put much spend through the card in last couple of yrs. At first was told that the pts could be clawed back if I didn’t renew next yr – I challenged this, agent checked with supervisor, and I was then advised that there were no conditions attached. Other things to report: advised I would be offered downgrade to gold charge card free for 1Y if I cancelled the plat card; I queried again receiving Harrods £100 deal and told no it was targeted audience only; I asked whether Marriott £400 deal would be extended past 19/12 but agent did not know; I raised whether Dec Shop Small would be cancelled this yr & although agent did not confirm nor deny they gave no impression it would be cancelled & reiterated that it was a usual promo that lasted 3wks of Dec. If ringing you can ask for reference numbers for the call – agent gave me a reference no or the call & also a separate reference number for the pts credit.

    • Ray says:

Agent I spoke to who gave me the 50k retention offer for my plat also said that the Marriott offer would be extended past the 19th of December. What was your average yearly spend on the card in the last couple years, could be the amount of points you get varies with how much you spend on the card

      • Harry T says:

I was offered 40k a few months back and had been spending relatively vigorously on the Platinum card to hit the upgrade bonus spend. Don’t normally spend on Platinum because the return is weak compared to my Gold.

  • Chris says:

Question about Amex Plat supplementary card. My wife and I have a card if we pay for another supplementary card does it come with a priority pass

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes a supp plat will come with a PP card and all other Plat benefits (hotel status etc)

    • Lady London says:

and unlike every other type of priority pass the UK Amex priority pass on each main card or supp admits 2 not just 1

  • Bob says:

Just a data point, I commented here a while ago about obtaining a refund on an avios booking that also had a pro active upgrade purchased on it. Happy to advise that received back all monies paid today (less £35) about a month after requesting refund (today also happens to be scheduled departure date).

just had a popup on here – switching bonus to HSBC Advance Bank Account £125

  • Mrs Nick says:

My husband just got a weird flyer FROM the NatWest advising him of all of the financial incentives available at coop, starling, metro and other banks if he closes his Natwest business account . Does anyone know what that is about? Is there a catch??

    • Charlieface says:

No catch, the gov mandated RBS/Natwest break off a bunch of business customers into another bank (Williams & Glynn) as a condition of receiving a bailout back in 2008, that failed, so now they have to offer £4k to anyone who switches out from them.
