The HfP chat thread – Monday 9th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/09/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-9th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Website issue:
Maybe just me, but when browsing comments my page, without any prompt, scrolls back to the top of the comments section. It does this fairly frequently and it’s damn annoying.

    Hi All
I’ve just had a claim turned down by BA because my cancelled flight last week was due to a bird strike damaging the aircraft (resulting in a 5 hour delay = 7 hours in a very cold ARN!). Can I pursue, or it that the end of it (force majeure)?
    Thanks

The airline is obliged to report officially the reason for any delay. There are websites you can check this on – can anyone advise which? I believe expertflyer is one but in that case only for 48hrs after the flight? also I believe people on flyertalk might help look up if asked nicely and given flight number date, route.

I would be a bit suspicious of this excuse by BA being valid. If your waiting aircraft was struck on the ground then yes. but more likely the bird strike affected the incoming flight. If a plane is not available because of an incident or weather affecting an incoming flight whose plane your flight was supposed to use, then this is not an exceptional circumstance affecting your flight and would not exempt the airline from paying compensation. The airline is supposed to be able to manage this by bringing another plane which within Europe is not diffcult ad Ryanair and Easyjet do it all the the time generally making sure no flight departs more than 2 hours late so not triggering compensation even when such incidents occur.

So I’d stake inmoney on the bird strike being on an earlier flight that day, perhaps on the incoming flight perhaps on one earlier, and not on your flight meaning you could be the first person since covid to be able to claim compensation for a late flight that was *not” caused by a reason qualifying as exceptional circs because the circs occurred to an earlier flight not yours.
