The HfP chat thread – Monday 9th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/09/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-9th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Data point (esp @meta) – Mr & Mrs reward bookings. I decided to move my stay at Eckington Manor to another weekend and have been able to cancel the original dates via the IHG website. I did initially get the message that it couldn’t be done online, but the next page gave a cancellation number and the points are now back in my account so it’s possibly yet another IHG IT glitch!

    • meta says:

Thanks. It actually seems fixed on my account. I don’t get the same message as before. Maybe because it is now fully processed with the Eckington? they contacted me a few days ago to confirm details and that breakfast is included. Now I’m thinking of moving the stay too and combine it with stay at Indigo Bath and Marriott in Bristol.

  • Aston100 says:

I have a reward flight next April with BA.
I can’t go, so will probably cancel a few days before (just in case BA themselves cancel it). I understand the resulting FTV will be valid until end of April 2022.
Is there a possibility that date may get extended?
My preference is to go to the same place, but in May half term 2022, but short of BA extending the date of the FTV, I can’t see that happening.

    • Anna says:

I wouldn’t bank on it – the April 2022 date was fairly generous to start with! I’m aiming to use mine Feb half term or Easter that year.

    • Lady London says:

be careful @Aston100, if things get better or for some other reason, BA could pull the FTV thing or its current terms at any time.

April is a long time to rely om things remaining the same. Plus the summer schedule – which airlines may re-strategise for – starts around 26th March.

So I would suggest you keep reviewing this – although I would think you’ll be OK for a while yet.

Looking at the Hilton Trafalgar square for OH Birthday late Dec. keen to take advantage of the £50 off £200 spend, If we eat at the roof top will this go toward the qualifying spend?

    • TGLoyalty says:

If it’s charged to the room it 100% will

If you plan on just going to the restaurant it may not as it may be charged by a different card account.

      • Nick says:

Thank you, plan ( hopefully) to stay there overnight followed by a Lunch at The Ivy to celebrate

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

They made a surprisingly rubbish (and often closed) use of the space last time I stayed there. If Covid made them sort out the space and use it properly then at least it had some upside 😀

  • Nick Newbury says:

Of course hoping we will be able to by then

  • Heather says:

    Hi
Flights to Athens at end of November cancelled by BA.
Wanted to change to April – went through MMB but not all flights on day outbound came up as options. So phoned BA – got told that you can now only change to 3 days before or 14 days following booking – pointed out EC261 – was told tough – if you want to complain fill in the website form. IS this a new BA policy ??

Sounds like a HUACA job to me.

      • babyg says:

2nd person today (in this thread) that have been quoted that.. id be interested to hear of successfully moving a cancelled booking beyond the 3/14 days.

      • Heather says:

I just googled HUACA and I doubt you mean ancient Inca and modern Quechua and Aymara religious concept that is variously used to refer to sacred ritual, the state of being after death, or any sacred object.
So what’s it mean then please

    • Lady London says:

It’s a try-on by BA. For some reason they are imagining they can override statute EC261 to which the UK is signed up, that supersedes the rules of any airline that tries not to offer passengers their choice of date to be rerouted onto rather than the more limited choice BA would like to offer.

If BA cancels you have a free choice. If it’s you cancelling then yes the rules you were advised of at at the time you purchased will apply.

      • ChrisC says:

The UK did more than ‘sign up’ to EU261

We made it part of our laws 15 years ago.

Pretty soon we’ll have to start calling it SI 2005/975

The Civil Aviation (Denied Boarding, Compensation and Assistance) Regulations 2005

  • Nigel W says:
