What is the Capital On Tap Business Rewards Visa card?

Capital On Tap – a small UK payments card company which I admit you may never have heard of – runs the only small business Visa credit card which can earn you Avios points.

With their Business Rewards card, you earn 1 Capital On Tap points (worth 1p cashback or 1 Avios) per £1 you spend, and get a 10,500 points (worth £105 or 10,500 Avios) sign-up bonus.  The annual fee is £99.

The £105 or 10,500 Avios sign-up bonus is a special offer for HfP readers who use our headforpoints code when applying.  The standard bonus is 10,000 points.

As an added benefit, this is the ONLY Avios-earning credit card in the UK which does not charge foreign exchange fees when used abroad.

In this article I will explain all you need to know about the Capital On Tap Business Rewards Visa card and who can apply.

How does the Capital On Tap Business Rewards Visa card work?

The Capital On Tap Business Rewards card is the only way to indirectly earn Avios via a small business Visa or Mastercard credit card.  We have also negotiated a higher sign up bonus exclusively for our readers!

With the Capital On Tap Business Rewards card, you earn 1 Capital On Tap point (worth 1p cashback or 1 Avios) per £1 you spend, and get 10,500 Capital On Tap points (worth £105 or 10,500 Avios) as a sign-up bonus.  The annual fee is £99.  The 10,500 points bonus includes an extra bonus of 500 points exclusively for Head for Points readers.

The Capital On Tap card is aimed at SMEs. You must have a limited company to apply – unfortunately sole traders and partnerships are not accepted.

Whilst you may not have heard of Capital On Tap, it already has 100,000 customers across its existing ‘no rewards’ payment card and the Avios products.  This card was its first move into the rewards market.

You can find full details on their website here.  Read on first, however, to learn more about the additional bonus for HfP readers.

Interest rate information:  Your interest rate is based on your business profile and can be as low as 9.9% APR.  The standard interest rate for marketing purposes is 39.9% APR.

How many points do you earn?

In summary, the Capital On Tap Business Rewards Visa card:

  • has a sign-up bonus of 10,000 Capital On Tap points which is worth £100 cashback or 10,000 Avios
  • this is increased to 10,500 Capital On Tap points, worth £105 cashback or 10,500 Avios, if you use the promo code “headforpoints” when applying
  • has an on-going earnings rate of 1 Capital On Tap point (worth 1p of cashback or 1 Avios) per £1 spent
  • has an annual fee is £99 (tax deductible as a business expense)

The sign-up bonus requires you to spend £5,000 within three months.  The bonus arrives at the end of your fourth billing period, irrespective of how quickly you spend the £5,000.

There are some other good benefits too:

  • 20 free supplementary cards for your staff
  • a credit limit of up to £50,000
  • up to 56 days to pay before interest is incurred
  • No FX fees and no ATM fees

Capital On Tap Business Rewards is the ONLY Avios-earning payment card which does not charge foreign exchange fees.

Another positive point is that Avios transfers from Capital On Tap are INSTANTANEOUS.  Log in to Capital On Tap, request a transfer of some or all of your available Capital On Tap points to Avios, log in to your British Airways Executive Club account and they will be there!  Capital On Tap is the only UK Avios partner to offer instantaneous transfers.

You can find full details of the Business Rewards card – and apply – on their website here.  Read on first, however.

Who can apply?

The Capital On Tap card is aimed at limited companies with a turnover of £24,000+.

Membership may be extended to partnerships and sole traders in 2021 but is currently restricted as Capital On Tap seeks to limit its credit risk during coronavirus.

Is it worth getting the Capital On Tap Business Rewards Visa?

If you have any sort of small business which would allow you to qualify for the card, I think you need to have a serious look at Capital On Tap now.

Here are the key points to think about:

  • For the first year, it is a no-brainer – you are getting 10,500 Capital On Tap points, worth £105 or 10,500 Avios, as a sign-up bonus in return for an annual fee of £99 as long as you use the promo code “headforpoints”
  • You only need to spend £5,000 in three months to qualify for the sign-up bonus
  • The £99 annual fee is a tax deductible expense so the net cost to you will be lower
  • The card has no FX fees
  • 1 Avios per £1 can’t be beaten from a Visa or Mastercard and you get far better acceptance than with an American Express card

But don’t forget …..

Capital On Tap points can be converted into cashback as well as Avios.  You can choose to take 1p of cash instead of 1 Avios.

If you don’t value Avios at more than 1p (and in most scenarios an Avios point is worth more than 1p as this article shows) then take your Capital On Tap points as cashback instead.

The cashback option also gives you a fallback in case Avios devalues or your travel plans change.  However, if you took cashback it would be taxable as business income.  You could pro-rata this to reflect personal spending but only if you also pro-rata the part of the annual fee you charge to your company.

Points and miles have no cash or taxable value – this is a long-held HMRC rule.

Word of warning with this card. Their customer service is close to terrible especially if you want to make a query outside 9-5. The website is clunky which is surprising for a Fintech. You can only make two online repayments each day and there is nowhere explaining this.

    • Rob says:

Not sure that most people want to make more than two online repayments each day 🙂

If you’ve got any queries and you applied via us, just drop me a note. We have a dedicated COT person who looks into any reader issues.

      • William Avery says:

You say that but it is weird you can’t like we can with Lloyds or any other retail bank. As a business card has been quite useful to make individual payments from time to time to split out the different costs. So I’d say it is useful, yeah. Why they don’t have anything on the website or in the small print is basic admin and I still haven’t had a proper explainer. Indeed, I was promised they would make modifications. Nothing.

        • William Avery says:

Sorry a fairer comparison would be Virgin where I can make multiple payments to the CC. I’ve now switched to downloading the CSVs at the end up the month and doing the reconciliation in QB but it’s a nice option particularly if not making the full payments & CoT pride themselves as a low-interest CC.

      • Ming The Merciless says:

Bank feeds into sage would make me sign up.

      • Ross says:

Argh, this would have been very helpful last week when I was trying to solve a problem with them and not getting very far!

  • kevbar says:

I have used COT for almost a year and found customer service to be good, much better than HSBC, Barclays or Santander, and a lot faster than Curve. I like their website and find it works quickly and efficiently.

They seem to have no idea how or when rewards are made, ie they are not reconciled to each transaction like Amex. I had problems with a rewards payment which was eventually sorted out.

    YMMV 🙂

  • kevbar says:

Has anyone had any luck with a second bonus or renewal bonus? My £99 fee due soon, I think it is a bit risky to cancel and apply again later.

    • Ammar says:

Be interested in the general view regarding continuing for a second year without any bonus. I am shifting my strategy to Lufty as i can pay HMRC for my SA atleast and diversify my portfolio of points. I do like COT for the ability for instantaneous transfers.

  • MY says:

Would be nice to be able to get a card! Just applied for third time and declined again, despite having top-notch credit rating and business been going 3 years! This time they have said: “having to be more conservative than usual because of the pandemic”. So why start a marketing campaign and customer push now if they’re having to be more conservative?!!

  • Andrew porwol says:

I’ve been using it heavily for a year. Customer service always been great. They only allow about 20 repayments a month and there is a monthly useage limit approx 4 times the credit limit. Would be easier if this was all stated somewhere but now I’ve figured it out it’s fantastic for earning avios

  • David says:

I hold various CCs and have changed all the monthly payment due dates to the same day of the month. Annoyingly, CAT won’t/can’t change your payment due day of the month, so I now have to remember that it’s 13 days earlier than all my other cards. It should be a simple change allowed by the user, but they can’t/won’t allow it.
All other cards credit points/bonus miles immediately at the end of a statement period (AMEX slightly earlier for some unaccountable reason). With COT you have to wait around three weeks before they post (though the subsequent transfer to Avios happens instantaneously).
Very spotty customer service. Too often I have to authenticate a transaction via my mobile phone – COT doesn’t appear to keep a track of regular payments.
A useful card as it’s a non-AMEX card that will earn Avios. Also a card without foreign transaction fees. But definitely a back-up, reserve card in my case.

  • Arkadiusz says:

I am curious whether it is once in the lifetime chance to get a bonus or like with Amex or Economist subscription I can re-apply after certain amount of time and earn new bonus.
I would be grateful for any advice.

    • PaulC says:

I’d love to know the same if anyone has any experience?
I closed my card the day my annual renewal was up (Held for 1 year) I closed it because I was no longer using my Limited Company and started the process of closing it down through my accountant (No work since December 2019!)
This week I got a new job so il be back using my limited company and would love a COT card again for paying bills and earning Avios.

    • PaulC says:

“The bonus points offer is only applicable to customers for whom this is their first rewards card with Capital on Tap. Avios are issued and redeemed in accordance with the British Airways Executive Club terms and conditions. See ba.com/theclubterms”
