The HfP chat thread – Friday 6th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/06/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-6th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hello quick question please.
About to make a payment to VWFS. I’m advised the MCC is 6012. VWFS say they don’t add any charges of their own.
I am in credit with Creation by more than the amount of the transaction.
I presume therefore that there shouldn’t be any fees or interest or any other charges (as I am in credit by more than the amount).
    Is that correct?

Also, presumably, in future I should go the bendy route right?

    Thanks.

    • Anna says:

I pay Santander with IHG monthly for our PCP car, no charges from Creation. You don’t need to get bendy about it, though, it’s a bit of a waste of your allowance Just pay it direct with card – I assume my payments will have the same code as yours.

      • Anna says:

Aston100, we also have a leased Seat Leon we use as a run around (though it’s very nice to drive and I would recommend it to anyone) with a very low monthly payment. VWFS accepts Amex via Billhop for this (the payment is so low the charge is negligible), so if the maths works for you, you could use the payments to hit an Amex spend or sign up target.

      • martyn ford says:

That`s an interesting point Anna. Is it not a good idea to show a wide range of spending? And do you know how willing they generally are to increase limits? I`m on £350,000 and am thinking of asking for more.

        • Anna says:

Do you mean on bendy? I don’t know about limits, I have £50k but use Rev more these days so have never bothered to ask. Of course if you have the capacity and need to show varied spending you can channel it via bendy but you don’t need to!

    • The Urbanite says:

Creation restrict 6012 spend to £300 a day, £500 over 3 days and £700 over days.

  • meta says:

@Anna Just had a confirmation directly from Eckington Manor that my rewards booking includes breakfast. It has to be cancelled by phone directly via IHG 30 days before. But good to know that rewards booking includes breakfast too.

    • Anna says:

Thanks @meta, that does make it a better deal! The one thing that’s slightly annoying about IHG hotels is the interrogation you get at breakfast about about whether you’ve paid for it – it would be much more pleasant if they just checked with the room number!

  • Adam says:

Question regarding Amex Plat please. I have two offers in my account. 1. Spend 150 get 30 back at Selfridges and 2. Get 100% back up to £100 for food, shopping and more which also includes Selfridges. If I spend more than 150 at Selfridges, would I get 130 back or in other words do Amex offers stack up? Any data points?

  • Harry T says:

Anyone reckon it’s worth switching to an RBS current account for the £100? I want to benefit from some of these tasty rebate offers Andrew has been talking about.

    • 747_Brat says:

Having switched to them in September, I can confirm they are very slow in doling out the incentive. I don’t expect to see my incentive until Jan/Feb, when the switch offer ends.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if they ask you for your documents during the sign-up, just pray to your Gods because their Document Management System (managed by a third party) is very painful to work with. It doesn’t read the documents properly and you will be asked to upload the documents again. I uploaded my documents 7-8 times, before they were finally accepted.

I kinda like their Rewards Account, which pays you £5 every month for 2 Direct Debits and 1 app logon. The account fee is £2, so you are essentially earning £3 per month. Not a big fortune, but every little counts! On top of it, you will get access to Amex like offers every month, which you can use in addition to your Amex offers and benefit twice from an offer.

Lloyds on the other end, paid out within a week of the switch. Metro also pays out quickly after you satisfy their conditions. Let me know if you need a code for the Metro Bank. Happy to share mine! 🙂

  • SLLee says:

Anyone knows any insurance company that will give COVID-19 medical cover and can travel against government’s advice? Trawick and Staysure give Covid cover but invalid if travelling against travel advisory. Thanks.

    • Tracey says:

I thought staysure have an extension you can add on to get covid cover? The other one I see mentioned is battleface.

      • SLLee says:

Staysure covers Covid but not travelling against FCO’s travel advice.

    • Sukes says:

I think Avanti will sell you an add on that covers travel against FCO advice but to Europe only. But check with a fine tooth comb exactly what you and will not be covered for, especially with regard to cancellation cover and medical cover when abroad and the per person excesses, before purchasing anything.

    • Pete says:

I keep saying it: Battleface 🙂

      • meta says:

Have you read T&C for Battleface? They claim they cover travel against FCO advice and medical covid, but there is nothing to indicate that when you look at the actual terms.

Currently there is no comprehensive insurance covering both. I suppose you could take several insurances each covering one aspect.

  • H says:

Out of interest, did anyone not targeted for the Harrods Amex offer trigger the cash back when tested? @TGLoyalty and @HarryT – I think you had mentioned buying something small to test whether it worked.

    • Harry T says:

I purchased some socks and the charge has gone through. No cash back offer has appeared and I haven’t received a rebate. So it appears the offer IS targeted. Luckily, Harrods is already refunding me because they don’t have any of the socks I ordered 😂

    • d4ve says:

I wasn’t targeted and made an online purchase on Wednesday. Nothing has appeared on my saved offers so agree it does look as though targeted. I will be leaving it over the weekend to be sure.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Looks like it’s targeted

    • Sukes says:

I did not receive post/email/saved offer notifications. Raised with Amex chat y’day who were adamant it is a targeted promotion. I haven’t bothered purchasing fancy socks to test

  • My Cat Voted For Biden says:

Just checking before I apply.. can I pay the bearded one directly with the creative one without routing the payment around the bend? Any fees for this?

  • Anna says:

A bit niche but the MAN Marriott has cancelled my stay and park booking for February, apparently they will be closed until April. Might have an impact on people’s travel plans and also the price of other airport hotels if a few do this!

    • Anna says:

Hmm, spoke too soon, the Hilton now wants £144 for the night before we travel, room only!

      • Vin says:

Check again later / closer to the date. MAN Hilton pricing varies and sometimes you get a cheaper Park & Fly offer if you scroll further down the page of room rates i.e. 2 separate Park and Fly offers for the same room ! We use them often after a bad experience at the CP (dirty bathroom with unflushed toilet from previous occupant!) – also free breakfast for Hilton Gold and nada for IHG Spire …

        • Anna says:

I’ve grabbed a family room for 30k points and also a park and fly at the CP for back up! We won’t need breakfast as will need to be at the airport for 4 am (LCC horrors!). Not fancying the unflushed loo 🤦‍♀️. Of course there’s a good chance it won’t happen but I can’t deal with the stress of not being at the airport the night before an early flight.

          • Peter K says:

Only stayed once at Crowne Plaza Man airport. The room walls were paper thin and we didn’t get a good night’s sleep as we could hear the people in the room next door.

    • Crafty says:

That’s crazy. This the old Four Seasons at the Hale roundabout yes? My local hotel!
