Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 6th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/06/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-6th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone else getting a message about 5000 bonus points when they log onto creation. When I click on more info I then get an error message. Can’t tell if it is linked to stay in hotel indigo london which also appears on link.

  • Stu N says:

I seem to have been given 1,000 Avios and no idea from where they came, I’m usually pretty good at tracking miles and points. There’s an entry appeared in my BAEC account – “Avios – Prize Award” dated 4 Nov. Anyone else got this? Any ideas where it came from?

  • Lucy says:

I’ve got a trip to Madeira coming up in January (if things are a bit more settled by then). I was wondering if people here have any recommendations for good hotels?

    • ChrisC says:

What do you mean by ‘good’?

What sort of facilities are you after (bearing in mind some may not be open) and your budget?

    • NvT1115 says:

      Reeds Palace!

    • RobL says:

      Quinta Jardins do Lago

    • Harrier25 says:

Yes. We stay at the Pestana Carlton. We were there at the start of October. Much more organised there than the circus in the UK!

  • Majed says:

Any idea if one can check in at Heathrow T5 now through the First Wing, given that the Gold lounge is closed?

  • Majed says:

Is it now possible to check in at Heathrow T5 First Wing, given that the Gold lounge is closed?

  • Will says:

    Quite impressed with BA today…
I was supposed to be flying to Madeira this morning and I got a txt on Tuesday asking if I wanted to reschedule, refund or voucher. I replied refund and the full amount is already back on my card….can’t complain about that.

  • Fran says:

I have a 241 voucher that was due to expire in 6 days time. I logged in today and see it has been automatically extended to 12 May 2021 (which is 3 years after original issue date). I didn’t receive any notification about this or ask for it – but nice to have!

  • CC says:

Has anyone tried to leave the country via air for a trip not strictly work or education related from the 5th and if so what measures are actually in place??

    • Rob says:

No measures. BA is not asking anyone for proof of travel looking at reports. If you can get to security without being arrested you’re fine.

If you’re really concerned, ring an estate agent and make a booking to visit a property whilst you’re over there. This is explicitly allowed.

      • CC says:

The regulations have changed, travelling abroad to view a property is no longer a valid reason, just wondering if border force are stopping people leaving the airports?

        • Rob says:

The rules can’t change, because they are fixed by the Act of Parliament published the other day.

          • A says:

…by a statutory instrument rather than act of parliament. But that’s just me being a pedant.

But your broader point is right – notwithstanding the government apparently thinking it can rule by edict at the moment and/or that its non-statutory guidance is legally enforceable, it is not

        • TGLoyalty says:

While Hancock and his gang might think they can just say something and the rules change, they can’t!

          • A says:

Even worse in Wales – last Friday they made new regulations at 11:50am. They were laid before the Senedd on Friday at 3pm. They came into forece on Sunday at 4am.

When were the actual rules themselves published? The morning of Monday. A secret law for 24 hours. Absolutely abysmal.

          • Anna says:

Indeed – if you look at the CPS guidance for all the lregulations it specially notes that whatever the government might say, it has no legal basis unless it’s specified in the legisation – sounds like they’re a bit exasperated with ministers saying whatever pops into their heads as well!

        • 747_Brat says:

There are no immigration checks on the way out.

      • xcalx says:

Yeah, just waste the time of an estate agent

    • Dave says:

In Scotland many of us are not even allowed to leave our council areas. My council doesn’t have any Marriott’s, Hilton’s, IHGs etc. I’m at 49 nights with Marriott yet cannot do my final night without breaking the law. Sturgeon now wants to fine is if we do.

      • Anna says:

Surely you can leave for work, or to take your kids to school, if these fall outside your council area?

    • Pete says:

It was no different to normal when I flew from T5 yesterday – no extra checks. Security was thorough, as I think they were bored, and the terminal was reasonably busy. Very few open shops: WHSmith, Pret a Manger, Boots, Travelex, the Caviar House and Fortnum and Mason (the shop). So a moderate improvement on last time.
