The HfP chat thread – Thursday 5th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/05/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-5th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

So all the T5 lounges are now shut… (BA + Plaza Premium + Club Aspire)

  • martyn ford says:

Amex QR offer. Bought my ticket yesterday, received the £100 today.

    • Andrew says:

Is that with a view to taking the voucher? It does seem tempting.

      • 747_Brat says:

IS QR still offering the generous 5000 mile destination change option? I think I read somewhere that they pulled the plug on it.

        • martyn ford says:

          No, that has gone.

          • 747_Brat says:

            Thanks mate.
I will wait for the next Qatar Business Class sale then, or might end up taking the voucher route. Still got some time to decide.

    • Jim Walton says:

That’s a quick turnaround for the Amex offer to hit! I’ve been waiting for about a month now for the selfridges offer to be reimbursed, the first time it’s taking so long – is there a chance the system did not register it properly?

      • martyn ford says:

Amex always very good on the `phone on these matters in my experience.

      • Tocsin says:

Selfridges order arrived 2 Nov, credits (£100 and £30) arrived today.

(and Harrods order still on the way, credit arrived on 3 Nov…)

I would definitely ask Amex – anything over a week or two would get me calling, unless there are specific unusual conditions on the offer

  • G says:

Has anyone with the Harrods offer brought a gift card online and had the £100 credit?

  • mark2 says:

    Re Morrison’s 10/7% offer:
    remember can only be used once;
    gift cards can be bought at self-checkout, but they are not heavy enough to register weight; to avoid constantly summoning help and so drawing attention put a chocolate bar from adjacent rack for each card and return to rack at end;
    They should stock Amazon, John Lewis and also One4All which can be used in M&S and most major retailers;
Morrison’s own gift cards can be used for fuel, other gift cards in the future and even groceries etc!

    • Harry T says:

      Cheers

      • Freddy says:

How much in gift cards have people bought. Previously I bought £750 and there was a lot of huffing and puffing from staff, could just be my local though

        • Alan S says:

I’ve bought books of £1000 on a few occasions when it was the paper vouchers. They had to take them from the safe in the cash room, but there wasn’t any fight.

    • Jonathan says:

Just go to a normal till, doing what you suggested looks far more suspicious! I’ve bought £700 before with no issues apart from an intrigued cashier! I just told her it was Xmas bonus for staff. Some stores have limits on Amazon & John Lewis gift cards so need a manager to authorise if you buy more than 1 of each but they just want to check that you’re not the victim of one of the scams where you get an e-mail telling you to pay a tax bill with giftcards.

      • 747_Brat says:

Does the gift card require “activation” at the till, or is it automatically activated upon billing?

    • rams1981 says:

10% on my wife’s gold card and my supp but nothing on mine. No surprise as I put £3k+ through cumulatively last time

  • mark2 says:

How many Amex cards can a person have these days?

    • InfrastructureDebt says:

For me personally I couldn’t get a third credit card and only ever 2 charge cards at one time, never applied for a third

    • Harry T says:

I’ve got one charge and two credit cards. Think I had three credit cards and one charge before I cancelled my BAPP this year. Amex seem to like me.

    • babyg says:

i have 3, ba prem, marriot and plat ATM, ive had 5 in the past.. 5 has been my max

    • Lee says:

I have 4 credit cards and no charge card ATM

  • Stephan says:

Did anyone get some fairly generous offer one onefinestay : Spend £200 or more, get £200 back?

    • Rob says:

It’s not generous. Plat cards have had this for over a year. They have little under £200 per night and 3 to 7 night minimum stays.

    • Jonathan says:

Yes, it’s not actually that generous due to the cost of their properties & minimum stay lengths. Probably won’t be able to turn that into more than a 20% discount.

      • meta says:

Plus you are able to book most properties on onefinestay cheaper elsewhere so the offer does not make much sense at all.

I guess they rolled it out to other cards as nobody actually used this benefit on their Plat card. They should have increased it to something like £600 and once per year.

  • Denis says:

BA Refunds question: paid for change of dates, Oct half-term flights to Malaga cancelled in July, Avios and full amount refunded apart from the extra £140 paid for date change. BA reply: “I understand that you made a change to your booking and incurred a £35.00 change fee per person to do so. I’ve looked into this and any change fees you incur are non-refundable, therefore, the refund you’ve received is correct.” Are they correct? Many thanks!

    • Harry T says:

BA does not refund change fees, as they view them as fees for the labour conducted at the time. I have tried to get them refunded before, without success. Perhaps it’s something you could fight but I wouldn’t consider it worth the hassle.

    • Lady London says:

If the fees covered the change to the flight BA subsequently cancelled then I would expect BA to lose this in court.

As and when it happens (same if they refuse to refund seat selection fees or luggage fees in the same situation) then a of you don’t forget to include current statutory interest rate of 8%p.a. in your claim right up until the money from BA reaches your account.

  • Sunguy says:

So, maybe I have missed something ***BUT*** can someone confirm my thoughts:

The FCDO website seems to have changed – the “exempt” countries from the “all but essential travel” list seems to have gone and only the travel corridors list seems to remain (its possible Im being daft and cant find it).

But also, the generic all but essential travel advice seems to also have been removed from the individual countries pages too….

    SO……

Does this actually mean that if I live not in England, I could at least in theory fly to any country and have my travel insurance cover me ?

    • Sunguy says:

Okay – I was getting a bit too excited – they have moved the advice to the individual country pages under the standard travel restrictions area rather than specific to covid-19.

      e.g. on the USA page:

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to:

the whole of the USA based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.
