Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 5th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/05/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-5th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A quick question: for someone single, who did not have Amex personal cards, what’s the best sequence to follow to maximize points/avios? Thanks.

    • Jonathan says:

      Search the site as there are regularly updated articles on this but sequence for maximum sign up bonuses is;

Card 1: Nectar or Marriott Bonvoy

Card 2: BA Premium Plus or Platinum

Card 3: Platinum or BA Premium Plus (whichever you didn’t take as card 2)

      • Sundar says:

@Jonathan – You missed a Step 0 – Get a partner if you are single to maximize points bonus 😁

Advice needed: for a family trip (2 adults + 2 kids) to Dubai in December, can someone recommend a nice beach hotel, which would be family-friendly but not too expensive?

    • Anna says:

I think Rob has mentioned the Jumeirah as being good and family friendly – don’t forget Emyr can get good deals on some of the hotels as well.

    • David says:

If you have Marriott points to redeem, I really recommend the Ritz Carlton Al Wadi Desert (about 1hr drive from Dubai). We went with a 2 year old and found there to be quite a lot to do and the staff incredibly helpful with our son! I was expecting to like the Ritz Al Hamra more (location on the beach) but Al Wadi has more facilities and generally more to do and the experience of being in the desert was very special. Would be expensive for cash though.

Hugo Boss offer on Amex. Anyone know whether it works online? T&C’s say in-store only… Thanks

    • Andrew says:

E-commerce probably run by a slightly different company to retail stores, so I would take the T&Cs by their word.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

One would assume given their stores have probably just clossed, that it will work online! Check the list of participating locations.

  • Andrew says:

Mr Porter offer – anyone found a way to buy a gift card? Website says no longer available but I thought I read someone did?

    • Jonathan says:

Buy something & return it but ask for store credit rather than refund

  • Harry T says:

Does anyone know how the Morrisons vouchers situation works these days? I bought a load of paper vouchers at the start of the year and used them for fuel. Is there now a different system?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes proper plastic gift cards now

      • Alan S says:

Is there a limit to the value loaded on these?

Presumably you can still use them ‘like cash’ at the petrol station?

        • Josh says:

Thing is, they could turn around any time and say gift cards can no longer be used on fuel. At the moment though they are valid (if staff know how to put them through the till).

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Since there’s an Amex (well, Marriott) thread, could we have all the Amex comments there please?

It’s frustrating for those of us in the mid two-year cycle!

  • d4ve says:

Hi, I seem to recall mention of the difference between a Curve Business and Curve Personal card and how to determine what you have but cannot find the article or comments. Can anyone help point me in the right direction please?

    • Crafty says:

My card says “Commercial” on the back. I’ve always ignored this, assuming it was an error. However as of the beginning of November it can no longer be used to pay HMRC.

    • BP says:

One of the comments on here suggests personal has lower spend limits. I think max £5k a day

  • Manny_D says:

Still no new offers on my Green Card for 2 weeks now. Any idea why this may be? Tend to get new offers every week.
