The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 4th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/04/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-4th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

omg rob what was that thing you put on facebook about BA shutting down for a month? Rumours doing rounds?

  • FloriGuy says:

Did anyone work out what happened with the Hilton Barclaycard points delay in posting to HH? I had seen someone mention it happen to them but not sure if anyone got an answer.

  • illuminatus says:

When did the Amex Wheely deal start?

  • Peter K says:

@Anna I don’t know if you saw my reply on page one about where I ate while in Bath but here it is again:

I had an amazing afternoon tea at The Dower House at The Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa, the best I’ve ever had.

Pad Thai from a definitely non-posh Thai Khun (apparently an award winning recipe) which was very tasty and nice not to dress up for.

Also Cote Brasserie was a safe bet my wife wanted to go to. I had hoped to go to the Pump House as it sounds good or Clayton’s kitchen.

Please advise regarding a refund with Hilton that they are being difficult about. I had a reservation in August that was made in January. 3 week before the date, I called to cancel but the hotel said it needs to be in writing. I sent them an email but when the refund didn’t appear I made several calls and each time was told it was being processed. After the original check in, I noticed the status was ‘no show,’ and for weeks I had to repeat the same thing to Hilton reps on the phone. Ultimately, a case was raised and Hilton said they’d send me a cheque in USD. This is not ideal and they have asked for credit card statements showing the transaction. I have sent them hotel confirmation and screenshot of amount and also a full statement of my credit card confirming last 4 digits of the card. I cancelled the card many months ago and my statements don’t go back that long. Will it matter if I paid via my husband’s Amex although I was a supplementary.
Do I go for charge back? The hotel booking was in my name but the card was my husband’s I think. I have tried everything with Hilton and they are insisting they want the statement showing the hotel amount.

    • the_real_a says:

I would not waste anymore time and just do a chargeback.

      • Lady London says:

call your card quickly there may be a time limit on chargeback (or S75 claim if UK credit card)

    • Harry T says:

So you attempted to cancel a flexible hotel stay? Or was the rate non refundable? If it was a refundable hotel rate and you were trying to cancel the stay within the terms of the rate, then you should have a good case for a chargeback or section 75 claim, and I wouldn’t waste my time further pursuing Hilton. Just make sure the aforementioned is true and you can provide evidence of this, and your attempts to cancel the stay, to Amex.

      • S879 says:

Thanks, the issue is the hotel sneakily said it was a no show and it says that as the status. Also, will it be an issue that the reservation was in my name but the payment was made by my husband’s card.

Don’t know whether Rob or any of the HfP staff are sufficiently close to Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty Team to be able to assist but would appreciate any advice with the following issue.
I got a status match to Platinum Elite in September and need to have completed 15 nights by December 9th to retain status til 2022.
I have stayed 10 nights so far and have a further 5 nights booked during the rest of this month but will, obviously, now have to cancel them due to lockdown.
I’ve contacted MB customer care to request an extension to the 90 day deadline (pandemic / unprecedented times etc.) but merely been directed back to the original status request web site! 🙁
    Any advice gratefully received…..

    • Rob says:

This is all done centrally, nothing London can do. Head of EMEA loyalty is now in Dubai anyway.

    • DJ says:

I did try to contact them via email and Twitter. All I had has the challenge period cannot be extended.

    • Harry T says:

I’ve not heard of anyone who has successfully persuaded Marriott to extend the dates of a status challenge. Sorry.

  • Martin says:

Is it permitted to fly from Rome through Heathrow to Cyprus? I have a temporary residence document for Cyprus, but a British passport, and I’m imagining I could save myself a lot of trouble by avoiding Heathrow given the latest measures.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes there’s no law against flying in to, transiting through or out of Heathrow.

  • James says:

Hearing from a senior BA member of staff that there will be a huge number of staff getting furloughed (80% mentioned) and lots of cancellations starting from tomorrow.

    • Baji Nahid says:

Yep that and that BA are shutting up shop for a month apparently.
