Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 4th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/04/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-4th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi Rob wondering which card my OH should get first from Amex as he hasn’t had any cards in his name for 2 years. What order is best to maximise his points? If it’s the gold first can I recommend him from my platinum Amex ? Thanks

    • Rob says:

      First: Marriott or Nectar
      Second: Plat or BAPP
      Third: Plat or BAPP

Don’t get Gold involved, except potentially for what you get at the end (without a bonus) once you’ve cancelled all the cards above.

      • Steve says:

Couldn’t you swap Gold in at 2, and still do BAPP at 3? 15k points less, but also free Vs platinum

        • Doogie says:

Not if you wanted to treble dip Sign Up Bonuses across points currencies in the new rules – *must* be Plat not Gold – Gold SUB is prevented by all personal cards, BAPP SUB is only prevented by BA cards, Plat SUB is only prevented by MR earning cards.

  • Alex M says:

My plat annual fee is coming in 10 days. Called amex but no retention offers (and no Harrods offer either!). Was only offered to switch to gold charge card free for a year. The question is – do I get a 20 000 mr points bonus if I switch back to Platinum from it later? Thank you!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

No I don’t think so. Was it brighton?

Thats the usual stuff they try and offer you (and paying it in installments) before they offer a retention bonus.

    • jil says:

having any personal amex will make you ineligible for the sign on bonus, have you got the 20k retention offer ealier this year? you can only get it once.

I got 20k in april, and back at that time amex refused to give retention offer to my partner, both our card exprires in dec, she got 40k last month when she tried again!!!

      • Jonathan says:

Not completely true. I had 20k in April then 30k in August. Both given by Philippines as a retention bonus with minimal fuss.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

20k for plat was a standard offer at the time, intended to be redeemed against the fee. Everyone got it even if you didn’t ring up.

It is down to 2 things: do they believe you? Do they know how to do it? Brighton always knows how to do it, they just don’t always do it. Philippines is mixed on both fronts

  • George K says:

Random: Anyone has trouble accessing AMEX accounts from desktop? (works fine on app)

  • Mco says:

    Mine worked fine right now

  • Sina says:

My recent stay at JW Marriott Grosvenor House: was upgraded from King Deluce to a One-bedroom Suite, with free breakfast included, and dinner at JW Steakhouse. the bill al came to £416 and triggered two Marriott offers:
    – spend £400, get £400 statement credit
    – Spend £200, get £50 credit

    I actually made some money!

Also used wheely and was upgraded to S class and triggered the £50 statement credit.

    • Andreas says:

That was my plan. Though I can’t go before lockdown, so I’ve booked for December and I’m hoping lockdown isn’t extended!

    • Lady London says:

Sounds fantastic @Sina thanks for letting everyone know, it’s good to know that even in covid the quality was there.

      • Sina says:

@Lady London yes it was great, forgot to mention that I had Lounge access, although it was mainly soft drinks and wine. But very calm and clean!

  • mick cooke says:

anyone else had flights times changed?, first of all had my flight time moved by 1hr & 50mins flying out, and my return flight time moved by 1hr 30mins. this was on Friday. then yesterday my outward and return dates were pushed back by 24 hours? Are they trying to get my to change my booking ? my flights are end of December

    • ChrisC says:

      Which airline?

    • Lady London says:

the latest move to following day counts as a cancellation even if it happened on only 1 flight on your booking.

so you can get full refund if ypu want or full choice of replacement dates ( not restricted to avios seat availability either for rebooking if it was an avios booking, also not restricted to within peak/nonpeak, as it was their cancellation not yours. EC261 refers.

  • Tw33ty says:

Not exactly a travel points and miles thing, but sainsbury’s is doing a double nectar points event from 11th Nov on selected departments.
Someone might find a good angle to maximise even more out them.

    • Pete says:

I believe returning the item bought with double points has been mentioned as an angle.

  • Aston100 says:

Hi, is it true that Amex cannot manually move any avios across to BAEC?
I want to cancel a BAPP, but the next automatic sweep isn’t for almost a whole month.
I spoke to the offshore team who felt that they cannot intervene.
Looking for confirmation from anyone here who might know better.

    Thanks.
