The HfP chat thread – Monday 2nd November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/02/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-2nd-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Thanks Simon

  • Sam says:

Hi Rob, I’ve just thought. Shangri-La golden circle points expiry – have they been extended? I’m sure I saw something about this but for the life of me can’t find find confirmation anywhere. I still have those 250 points from that article where you advised to download the app (which I have since deleted) and the points expire end of Dec 2020….thanks!

    • Rob says:

Yes, we covered it a few days ago. Search ‘HFP by Category’ (home page, desktop, bottom right) and it will come up, or just search in the search bar.

I have never bought a gift card but have stayed in several of the hotels. I can particularly recommend Lake Louise and Montebello.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

+1 for Lake Louise. Vancouver and Calgary were nice enough but wouldn’t forego other options for them.

  • Bizboy says:

Just got spend £500, get £100 back with Qatar Airways, on my gold amex.

Is there any way I can buy a £500 gift voucher with say 2 years expiry on it? Effectively to lock in the offer / discount for a later date.

Thanks in advance for any answers

    • Rob says:

Yes. Book a random flight for £500 and cancel it for a travel voucher. Qatar adds 10% so you get £550 back with a 2-year expiry date.

      • Andrew says:

They add 10% of the base fare, excluding taxes and charges, so you don’t get as much as 10% uplift on the price paid. I’m sure they will be bemused by the number of one way tickets from Hong Kong sold to UK residents all of a sudden….

      • 747_Brat says:

Does someone know how many travel vouchers can be applied on a booking?

        • Andrew says:

I don’t, but there’s about 30 FAQs about vouchers alone on their website.

  • Andrew says:

Lovely. Sure has been an overly complicated rollout this offer, unsure why they have deviated from their tried and tested model. With the other £100 offers, it was available to save to card and a couple of days later an email mailshot to everyone telling them it’s there to save if they haven’t already. We’ve had things in the post to some (10 days in advance), emails to others, radio silence to others, no way to see (until now) that it’s even saved…..

    • Sandgrounder says:

+1 It’s not showing in my saved offers, even though I’ve had the email. I was happy, now an amount of doubt has been introduced.

      • Andrew says:

Well if you have an email from Amex stating the offer, then you can 100% rely on them paying out the credit. There is zero risk. How could they possibly backtrack on that? I got the email and not showing on my saved offers either but I have it in writing so will be spending away.

        • Sandgrounder says:

I know I’ll get it in the end Andrew, I’m just so burned out with arguing the toss with people for refunds etc over the last few months I wish things would just be straightforward for once. It’s probably going to be three bottles of booze (and I don’t even partake) and half a kilo of licorice, it shouldn’t be this hard!

        • Andrew says:

Yeah I hear you Sand – things like this offer should be a nice surprise that brighten our very dark days, but there’s always a complication that turn them a bit sour by the time you get them. And then people on here tell you how you should feel and use phrase like “spit your dummy out” – when what people don’t realise is that for many of us our mental health is taking a bit of a bashing at the moment and we just want something to be easy and fair for a change. But to set your concerns to rest, when I rang this morning (before the emails hit) the agent confirmed the offer was saved on my account and that was without the mailer, so I trust that they are there.

  • tom1 says:

I didn’t get the leaflet, I did get the email today, but not showing in offers (saved/new) in the app or website!

  • Ben says:

    Hi
I was just looking at the terms of the IHG Ambassador offer and it looks like the signup end date has been extended to 31st Dec. I got an original offer email but it been updated on the new date. Can anyone confirm?

(Still don’t know if I’ll be able to stay in a hotel before end of Jan AND stay in a 40k place by April 21 tho!)

    • Peggerz says:

      Hi Ben.
I was just about to sign up to IC Amb with IHG and can confirm the rules are as you thought. I have a couple of trips to do to London before April 2021, but this damn lurgy keeps changing things. If the lockdown goes to plan – and from what I’ve read from medical experts it is not by any means a given – then I will trigger Amb and stay mid December. Then again…..
I know that @Anna had taken out Amb recently but has had to cancel her trip and may not be able to trigger the 40k voucher.
