The HfP chat thread – Monday 2nd November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/02/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-2nd-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

O/T. I’m not sure if this is of interest but in January I booked a P&O cruise for Easter which of course was cancelled because of the pandemic. P&O said they would take until May for me to get the refund but it didn’t happen so I put in a section 75 claim to AmEx who credited my account the next day. Thankyou to the extensive correspondence in these columns on making section 75 claims which was the inspiration for my doing so. However, I received the refund again and direct from P&O on 30 October and this was credited also against my AmEx. I’ve let them know but I’m surprised it happened as there must have been thousands of s.75 claims and I’d have thought P&O would simply have refunded AmEx direct.

Has anyone successfully split a onefinestay booking across many amex cards? The £200 off £200 offer is on a lot of my cards, would be nice to get a (nearly) free stay out of this for next year!

    • meta says:

Why don’t you call them and ask? It can’t be done online obviously, but maybe you’ll get the agent who is able to process it.

    • Tom H says:

I d be interested to know this swell, or purchase gift cards, I looked and I could only find third party ones?

  • Adam says:

Almost hit £10k on my BAPP but am struggling to work out what reward card to sign up to next. Wife is still within her 24 months so referring her for BAPP would be a gamble but I know sometimes it is possible to ‘slip through the net’ (different email address etc).

Not eligible for BA Gold (24 months etc).

Not seeing any great sign up bonuses with Virgin at the moment.

    • BuildTheWall says:

Assume you mean Amex Gold? No sign up bonus, but you can get 10k bonus points for spending 15k.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Personally I would wait until you qualify for a bonus.

  • James says:

Hi all, was looking to eat at Berners Tavern on Tuesday but wanted to confirm payment would be taken from The London Edition to active the £400 credit offer. This was my response:

    Hi James

I have personally eaten in the restaurant twice in the last month and I can 100% assure you my bank statement says Berners Tavern. I actually checked my personal account before responding to you.

    • Peter K says:

      Response from whom?

      • James says:

        The Head of Restaurant

        • TGLoyalty says:

vs proof it said Marriott on the screenshots Rob provided?

          • James says:

I shared the article with the Head of Restaurant and the above was her response.

          • TGLoyalty says:

I have to be honest this deal is one of the biggest saga’s on this site for ages. The amount of moaning about not getting it and the others questioning every bit of data is unbelievable.

You know why things like this get shut down quickly? Because people get too chatty rather than just believe the evidence provided by fellow readers.

Personally If the risk of it not working is too great then I’d just leave it.

          • Lady London says:

….well in this case there wasnt just chatty there was a headlined article….!

          • A says:

Important question: did the person in question spend on an Amex, or a debit card? “Bank statement” suggests credit or debit card of some sort rather than Amex…

    • James says:

People on comments section get too chatty. Who’d have thought it?

    • James says:

Lady London, exactly my thoughts too. May aswell just shut the website down.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Clearly the “head” of this restaurant didn’t read HfP themselves otherwise they wouldn’t need to be sent a link!

        • James says:

What is your issue here? My findings today may have saved someone the misfortune of being stung with a £400+ bill when they thought they could be getting £400 statement credit.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Or they’ll get it because the head has no idea how their systems are actually set up

  • Kai says:

No harrods offer for me sadly

  • r* says:

So the £100 Harrods from amex is not going to be available for all cards?

Anyone called amex to confirm yet?

    • Kai says:

Chatted to customer service, was told the offer would be pre enrolled to the whoever received the offer in the post.

      • Dave says:

Typical Amex mess! I phoned up to discuss cancelling my card last week after the new year card fee of £575 hit.

“We’re doing great offers to keep cardholders like you. Have you heard about our new Harrods offer?”

Me playing dumb, “no what is it?”

“All platinum card holders will get a £100 credit at Harrods starting next Tuesday.”

“Will it be on my offers?”

“It doesn’t need to be, its for ever cardholder. So you definitely qualify.”

Then checked with chat yesterday, “ are you referring to the Harrods 100% statement credit? If so this is already saved to your card.”

They then Paste the deal to confirm. I haven’t had an email or letter or anything at all to say I’m eligible aside from the phone call and chat, as I said earlier I guess I’ll run with it as I have confirmation I’m eligible and then will argue with Amex if not.

But it does seem another situation where customer services give conflicting information!

        • Andrew says:

Repasting from earlier in the chain:
No mailer here – not on my offers tab either. Just phoned Amex, spoke to Brighton, and they’ve confirmed I am enrolled and all the terms, and also confirmed that their call is recorded so if there’s any problems then I’m covered. So basically if you’re in doubt about the offer, call them and check and they will tell you if you are enrolled or not. They certainly do seem to have overcomplicated this one – things in the post, hidden offers tab etc….

        • Chris says:

          Tuesday?
Today is Monday. Did you mean Monday, or is the offer in fact starting tomorrow?

        • Gary says:

Just chatted with Amex and have been told that it is for a target audience. If you have not recieved a letter or on your offers then you are not enrolled in the Harrods offer. Also told me they cannot add you manually for the offer as the system automatically generates who was targetted for this offer.

      • Paul says:

As I suspect as per my mention of this earlier.

    • James E says:

The T&C on the back of the mailer clearly say the offer is targeted.

      • Andrew says:

An offer for just primary Platinum cardholders is still targeted – ie not for free BA cardmembers

        • James E says:

Huh? The letter says it’s a platinum benefit/ thank you. Why would it be being sent to BA cardmembers?

          • TGLoyalty says:

because people read about this stuff online.

Just because its targeted doesn’t mean its not targeted for all primary platinum cardholders.

          • Paul says:

The way to test this is for someone who has not received the letter to buy something from Harrods on their Platinum card and see if they get a credit. Otherwise these discussions will go around in circles. I might head over and make a purchase.

          • Rob says:

Exactly. A loaf in the grocery hall will prove it either way. I’d do it myself but I did have the mailer on my doorstep when we got back from hols on Saturday.

          • Andrew says:

Or just call Amex – took me less than 5 minutes and all confirmed (despite no mailer)

          • TGLoyalty says:

Well I’ve already took the plunge for something I was going to buy anyway.

I’ll let everyone know how it went, no confirmation email anyway.

  • Nick_G says:

Anyone received the Qatar Amex offer on supplementary cards, or is it just the primary cards that are targeted for the Qatar offer?

  • Jane says:

A recent refund has taken my total spend to year just under 10K on my BAPP card, I already have the 2-4-1 which I’m not worried about going anywhere but my progress tracker shows sped £300 and trigger a voucher. if you go over the 10K limit again do you get another ??
