British Airways cuts Moscow, Amman and Cairo to 80 tier points each way in Business

As we covered a few weeks ago, British Airways has retired the ex-BMI Airbus A321 fleet which flew many mid-haul routes. These were short-haul aircraft which still had flat beds in business class and so justified higher ticket prices.

Moscow had it even better, being served by a long-haul aircraft with First and Club World on selected services. Cairo has also had long-haul aircraft in the past – I remember flying back from there in First Class many years ago.

Going forward, these routes will be served exclusively by standard short-haul British Airways aircraft. A five hour flight now gets you the same cramped seating as the hop to Amsterdam.

To tie in with the reduced service, British Airways has cut the tier points you receive for flying three routes in business class. Routes which used to be treated as long-haul are now treated as short-haul.

As you can see from the BA tier point calculator here, Amman now shows as just 80 tier points each way in Club Europe – the same as Heathrow to Athens:

Weirdly, as you can see, the Royal Jordanian flight between Heathrow and Amman still earns you 140 tier points each way as it is over 2,000 miles. This is the cut-off for partner flights.

Oh, and on Royal Jordanian you’ll get, at least in normal times, a flat bed seat on a Boeing 787 too as I reviewed here.

The same applies to Moscow and Cairo. Both now only earn 80 tier points each way in Club.

Beirut and Tel Aviv, the other routes historically served by the ex-BMI A321 fleet, still show as 140 tier points each way. Beirut is not expected to return, however, and Tel Aviv faces direct competition from Virgin Atlantic.

I actually flew in the cockpit of a 777 from push back in Cairo to parking at Heathrow on one of my many BA trips back in the days when you could visit the front end ((pre 911). It was an amazing experience, one I will never forget. The thing was, I had paid for a club seat which my backside never even touched!

  • Boris says:

So the TPs are reduced, the flight numbers changed, the in flight service reduced, the seats downgraded, and yet the fares remain exactly the same. Where are the cheap fares to CAI and AMM?

    • 1ATL says:

Amman in Club World used to be at least £1300-1400 for the cheapest return. The cheapest fare for Club Europe is now around £800 so they have lowered the fare in accordance with the the service offered.

      • 1ATL says:

Actually £637rtn in Club seems to be the cheapest. £350rtn in Economy which will presumably be buy on board when things get back to normal – used to be around £500rtn as a World Traveller product with seat back IFE and full meal/bar service. I guess these new fares reflect all the reduced on-board offering.

  • Charlieface says:

Tel Aviv was always popular on BA with two to three a day, I don’t think one daily on VS would make much of a dent. Admittedly, a large amount of pax came on connections from the USA, and VS could mop that up via Delta, but still it’s a route that is definitely staying. BA and IB are also pretty much the only airlines with flatbeds on that route.

    • Dominic Barrington says:

To that point, carriers based in the United States I have opened several new routes to Tel Aviv. There is now, for instance, and nonstop from Chicago on United. All of this will put pressure on British Airways.

    • Robert says:

There are plenty of other airlines with Flat Beds on the TLV route besides BA and IB.
VS were planning a second daily flight from Nov, but that’s obviously not happening for now.

    • 1ATL says:

As far as I can see, TLV remains a Club World /flat bed product

  • James says:

The arrival time for the BA flight into Cairo is dreadful. Now club Europe seat (let’s be honest, it’s just an economy seat with an empty economy seat shared between you and another passenger). Now just 80TPs. They really seem to be discouraging customers.

  • Richard says:

    Other operators are available….

  • Robert W.Crowe says:

A380 flight back from Hong Kong 11th December 2019 in economy with BA one of the most uncomfortable flights experienced in 50 years of flying. I ended up with two weeks in Hospital with pneumonia on oxygen ,seats from the yanks in front all the way back all night and everyone coughing their heads off and no bloody leg room. Thank goodness for a wonderful lady who gave me a couple of extra wee bottles to get me through the night.
