What are the 2021 Avios peak and off-peak calendar dates for BA, Aer Lingus and Iberia?

What are the peak and off-peak dates for redeeming Avios points?  This article looks at the British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus peak and off-peak Avios calendars for 2021.

Remember that these calendars apply to the operating airline and not to where you book your flight.  An Iberia flight uses the Iberia calendar even if you book it with the British Airways Avios redemption site.

If you need to refer to this in the future, you can find a link to this article under the ‘Avios’ tab in the HfP menu bar.

Avios peak and off-peak calendar

What if I am booking a partner airline such as Qatar Airways?

You need to remember that partner airlines are charged at peak rates at all times.  This applies to Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Finnair etc. You can see the British Airways partner chart here.

Where do the Avios peak and off-peak calendars differ?

I have reproduced the calendars below.  You will note that there are substantial differences between the two main calendars for BA and Iberia. Especially when travelling during school holidays on a route served by both by BA and Iberia, it may well be cheaper to book on Iberia or Aer Lingus.

If, for example, you want to travel on British Airways in April 2021, you will be paying the peak Avios price from 1st April until 19th April with just one off-peak day in between.

However, if you look at the Iberia calendar, you can see that Iberia’s peak period is only from 1st until 5th April.

There are also different peak periods around school holidays. On Iberia and Aer Lingus, February, May and October half terms are all off-peak.

The summer holidays peak season starts earlier on Iberia (18th June) and ends one week after BA.

The days around Christmas are also interesting as BA sees the full second half of December as a peak travel time whereas Iberia sees 21st-23rd and 28th-29th December as off-peak dates.

Of course …. you can only benefit from this if Iberia flies to your chosen destination, and you are happy transiting via Madrid. It is also not possible to use a British Airways American Express companion voucher if you fly with Iberia or Aer Lingus.

Any significance that the 6th July, 10th and 17th August and 14th December – all Tuesdays- are off peak with BA?

    • Rob says:

Tue is the quietest day of the week

      • MattB says:

Last year I made a booking for August where the return was on one of those Tuesdays and had quite a heated discussion with the call centre over this. The guy refused to listen when I said it was an off peak date, actually laughed saying why would August be off peak!! If he had just processed the transaction without saying anything he worked have saved himself the later embarrassment.

By coincidence I booked for next summer also on those off peak dates, no such drama from you first this time.

    • Alex Sm says:

Same question re 15 April – it is surrounded by peak dates but was conveniently off peak with availability, so my partner and I booked good redemptions in recent 50% sale. Another question if we are able to fly these… but why 15 April?

  • Nigel Thompson says:

Beware! I booked Outbound to SFO two weeks ago on 20th April 2021 only to be told it was Peak. I questioned this and the very helpful agent checked it again only to confirm it was Peak. I quoted the calendar but she said it had changed in September. While she was checking another source, I then found a calendar produced by another web site in October and that still said it was Off peak!
Long story short, after twenty minutes ( good for her!) she found it somewhere in her system showing as Off peak and completed the booking on that basis, with a promise to take up the anomaly with her Manager.

    • Brian says:

Fingers crossed that you’ll actually be allowed to travel directly from the U.K. to America by then.

  • Bagginsurrey says:

I’m confused, I’ve booked an outgoing companion ticket for October 21 and I’m keeping track of availability for return and the dates I would like 29 or 30th are showing as peak on BA booking, but not on chart. Does it depend which continent you are travelling to or maybe specific places popular due to school holidays? I have a screenshot, but unable to insert.

  • Rich says:

From a few of these posts it seems that the BA booking system is in a right royal mess where Avios are concerned!

  • Bagginsurrey says:

Checking on Flyertalk, they seem to have a chart which matches BA’s booking screens. Fight!

    • Mikeact says:

Yes, I noticed that, which begs the question, are the charts above an official BA release ?

      • Rob says:

The BA chart is not new – we originally published that months ago. Perhaps BA has changed it? Will ask on Monday.

What is new is the IB chart but that was a bit boring on its own so we decided to put them all together.

  • Dominic Barrington says:

It feels just slightly ironic (and I’m being polite here) that an airline indicate any dates – even in 2021 – as being ‘peak’…

  • Mikeact says:

The only other point I would make is that in April, Rob had already posted the BA 2021 chart. I don’t have the inclination to check, but are those dates the same as posted today ?

  • James says:

Pffffft, as if we’ll be allowed to fly anywhere anyway.
