The HfP chat thread – Saturday 31st October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/31/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-31st-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just spent £151 in Harvey Nicks, which triggered Amex offer immediately. Purchase included a gift card (£50), which I know a few people have asked previously is eligible. Also 10% off this weekend for Rewards members.

    • Andrew says:

Yes it works fine with an standalone £150 gift card transaction online too. And through BA shopping site you get 2 Avios per £1 spent, not the 14 as advertised for the purchase of goods, but better than nothing.

    • Sam says:

Is the offer triggered by a gift card of £150 (I’m also struggling to find anything I want to buy/need online. Do you get 10% off the gift card? Currently not a rewards member but will sign up.

Was planning to go in store today but a very wet London so finding the motivation to do so!

      • Andrew says:

Yes the offer is triggered by the purchase of a gift card but no you don’t get 10% off its purchase – or everyone would do that and get 20% off anything they buy!

        • Sam says:

Thanks Andrew. Did go in store and found absolutely zilch! Was thinking of buying the gift card in store but the ts and cs state no gift cards. I don’t actually need or want anything so will decide whether to actually use the offer!

          • Andrew says:

Don’t worry about the T&Cs saying no gift cards – that’s always the case but never affects the credit back, it’s impossible for Amex to know you’ve bought one rather than goods.

    • H says:

Does anyone know if the Harvey Nichols gift card can be used at the restaurants on the 5th floor?

    • Nick Newbury says:

anyone having trouble with the code, doesnt seem to be working?

  • Craig says:

I’m expecting a refund to Creation IHG in the next few days, does anyone know whether they adjust the direct debit?

    • Lumma says:

I’ve found that Creation take the direct debit even if you make additional payments to cover the balance due

    • Sandra says:

I don’t pay by direct debit but I do know that if you are in credit they still expect a payment as I found out earlier this year when they charged me a missed payment fee even though a large refund that more than covered the bill landed in my account. Apparently it’s their IT system that expects a payment once a statement is issued. They did refund me the charge but told me in future it’s best just to make the minimum payment

    • Craig says:

      Thanks.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

You pay by direct debit – ???
      Why?

  • Chris Heyes says:

Finally able to book our free seats on our flight from Phoenix Aug 21,
After BA giving 3 different reasons (none correct) why we wasn’t able to. So persistence paid off (i told them the three seats we would claim regardless of some one paying for the same seats between now and flight time worked lol) BA apologized saying it was a technical error now fixed, would we now pick our seats
Well done BA at least sorted, credit where credits due.
Made 4 Hotel bookings for our trip next Aug 21
Hotel Boulderardo Boulder plus Colorado Chautauqua National Historic Landmark booked through Hotels.com. then change of scenery flight to Phoenix AA then Sedona Best Western Plus Arroyo Roble Hotel & Creekside Villas (Best Western member & stayed previously) then back to Phoenix flight to Page az (Condor Airways)
Booked Lake Powell Resort Hotel (Hotels.com couldn’t provide the Lake View Suite we wanted) so booked direct (note this Hotel isn’t Bril but amazing views & near what we wanted to do/visit)
Just need US to let us in Aug fingers crossed

    Good use of Tesco vouchers.

    Particularly in a pandemic

    Tesco Delivery Saver.

£16 of vouchers pays for weekly delivery for 6 months.

    https://secure.tesco.com/clubcard/delivery-saver-plan/UK-009888.prd

Works out at 61p per weekly shop, bargain for the winter IMHO

    • Genghis says:

We’ve been using £24 of vouchers x 3 = £72 for a couple of years now for annual anytime deliveries (legacy rate). Good use.

  • Tw33ty says:

Just got a second amex card for myself. Does anyone know how long it takes for amex offers to go active on new cards?

    • Harry T says:

Usually a few weeks before they appear in force. Probably helps to spend on the card a bit too.

    • Doc says:

When I changed from my Gold charge to credit earlier this year, it took almost 2 months before I started to get proper offers and AMEX could not explain why.
Having said that normally takes about 4 weeks dependent on your spending.

  • Clive says:

Have a good balance currently in Curve Cash from refunds. If I want to use this to make a purchase in excess of what is in the cash balance is it possible? Thanks

    • mr_jetlag says:

nope, will decline. best to move the lot to revolut top up which is what I did for a large refund over 1k.

  • Ben says:

    Hi
I was wondering if the Virgin cards are churnable? Was thinking of going again with the paid for Virgin while I wait for my Amex 24 months. Good idea?

    • Harry T says:

I believe you need a six month gap before you are eligible for the sign up bonus. If I were you, I would wait for an enhanced sign up bonus before you jump in.

      • Genghis says:

6 months before they let you have a card again, not necessarily to be eligible for a SUB.
