The HfP chat thread – Friday 30th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/30/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-30th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Re. BA Booking with Confidence:
-how close to the flight date can I cancel the flight myself, and ask for a voucher?
-can I only do that by phone?

    Thanks!

    • Dave says:

I think it’s a couple of hours before your flight and you can only apply for the voucher online

      • Michael C says:

        Cheers!

        • Sandgrounder says:

Can I claim an FTV direct from BA if I booked through an agent (Amex Travel)?

          • Nick says:

No, all agent bookings must deal with the agent only. BA will reject a voucher request for any booking not made directly with them.
There are also no EMD e-vouchers for travel agent bookings, only FTV.

          • Sandgrounder says:

            Cheers Nick

Not sure it will be of much use (and possibly gone by the time most folks read this), but BA had added two flights a week to the Maldives over Christmas / New Year – (Mondays and Tuesday going out, Tuesdays and Wednesdays coming back). Club seats mostly gone already, but 2 still available on 22 Dec going out, only economy available on the way back (30th Dec and 6th Jan). Good luck to anyone who can book while they still show.

    • Flyer68 says:

22nd going out in Club now seemingly gone, but 29th Dec showing available as are 4th and 5th Jan.Only 23rd December available in Club on the way back..

Blue Air commecing operations from Heathrow to Bucharest. Confirmed on their Facebook page. Fares from 29.99 euro. Is this the first truly low cost airline at LHR ?

    • ChrisBCN says:

No… Vueling have flown there in the past, and I’m sure others have to.

  • John says:

Now we can go to Switzerland freely again I would like to go for some hiking before it gets too cold, also because once the brexit period is over we might get banned from Schengen completely until covid is resolved.

Happy to stay in when I return to the UK (might also go to Sweden afterwards to reduce the 14 day period if Sweden stays on the good list), but not sure if I really should given the severity of the pandemic there….?

I have an Easyjet flight that no longer appears for sale on their site or on Google Flights. I am assuming it has been cancelled but they’ve chosen not to tell me yet. Has anyone else had this happen to them? If so, should I contact them to ask for a refund or wait for them to bother letting me know that I won’t be flying? Thanks!

    • Harry T says:

It should say that it’s cancelled in the app, when they process it. I first saw that my flights weren’t available to buy any more, and then a day or so later the app showed my flight as cancelled.

    • Travel Strong says:

Standard practice with easyjet currently. If you want a refund you’ll have to contact them anyway, even after they get round to telling you about your cancellation – so call at your convenience. The only difference with waiting for the mail is, they may offer some minor incentive to have a voucher instead. But don’t accept any excuses about having to have a voucher or free rebooking – unless that actually works out for you.

    • Lady London says:

      Look out for an email.

If there’s any other flight they still have flying that route that day, they will move you from the flight they cancelled to that flight. Their email will just say ‘to help everyone they’re just shifting things around’ (literally). There won’t be any flight numbers on that email, neither the flight you chose to book, nor the other flight number they’ve moved you to. In short, they will try to claim a cancellation of your flight is a mere time change.

If there’s no other flights left to that destination on that day then they will, indeed, send you an email saying you’ve been cancelled, and their preferred option for you to choose amongst.

However they are generous with options. YOu could call them but they might say wait for the email. If it’s showing as Sold Out on the website, nearly all the time that means the flight is cancelled.

They can leave a flight cancelled 4 weeks, or I think Ive noticed even 5, before the email reaches you. then just work out what you want, think if there is anything you want that is not there that you should be having if they would fess up to it being a flight cancellation not a reschedule (if you get that nice casual email), call them and ask for what you want.

  • Manny_D says:

Anyone else has a lack of new offers on their Amex this week? Tend to get a couple new ones here and there but have not seen anything this week.

    • Andrew says:

Seems to be over the last couple of months that very little drips in during the week and then Monday morning they release the new ones.

    • Harry T says:

Yeah, not much this week across my three cards and supps for other accounts.

  • KBuffett says:

Completely OT – but TM Lewin’s service is shocking. I’ve been waiting for a refund since April. They won’t take phonecalls. Stumbled upon their TrustPilot reviews – shocking.
Private Equity certainly know how to ruin a company.

  • David says:

Are you able to use a BA FTV as part payment towards the taxes and fees for an Avios redemption by calling? Doesn’t seem to be an option to enter the voucher details when booking online.

    • Harry T says:

Yes, but if it’s a future travel voucher, you will need to call.

      • Dan says:

I was told no and found it in the small print. Cash FTVs for revenue fares, avios FTVs for avios redemptions only. I prefer Harry’s answer so let us know how you get on!

        • AJA says:

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t be allowed to use a cash FTV against taxes and fees on an Avios booking. It is like any other cash voucher BA might give out. I could also see the reason to use a FTV taken for an Avios booking to be used only against another Avios booking.

          • Rob says:

A cash FTV will be turned into an eVoucher at some point, when I guess it will be usable.

The reason you can’t do it with an FTV is that the FTV is just a frozen ticket. The call centre unfreeze it and change the date, destination etc as required. What they CAN’T do is change cash to Avios or vice versa.

    • Anna says:

Back in April I used a cash voucher from a cancelled BA holiday towards the taxes/fees on a new avios booking, so it is allowed.
